    The editors provide a broad overview of the social position of Roma, Yeniche and Travelers in Austria and in some other European countries. Living conditions and life contexts, languages ​​and cultural productions are just as much a topic as committed rebellion and organized visualization of these minorities (""minorities"" in the words of Ceija Stojka). Well-known scientists from various disciplines and activists have networked for this purpose, participated in workshops, lectures and conferences at the University of Innsbruck and make their decades of experience and research results available for this anthology."     Die Herausgeberinnen bieten einen breiten Überblick über die gesellschaftliche Position von Roma, Jenischen und Travellers in Österreich und in einigen anderen europäischen Staaten. Lebensverhältnisse und Lebenszusammenhänge, Sprachen und kulturelle Produktionen sind ebenso Thema wie engagiertes Aufbegehren und organisiertes Sichtbarwerden dieser Minderheiten („Wenigerheiten“ mit den Worten von Ceija Stojka). Namhafte WissenschafterInnen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und AktivistInnen haben sich zu diesem Zweck vernetzt, beteiligten sich an Workshops, Lehrveranstaltungen und Tagungen an der Universität Innsbruck und stellen ihre zum Teil jahrzehntelangen Erfahrungen und Forschungsergebnisse für diesen Sammelband zur Verfügung."

    Das hier als Faksimile vorgelegte "Wörter=Buch von der Zigeuner=Sprache" von 1755, nebst einem "Schreiben eines Zigeuners an seine Frau, darinnen er ihr von seinem elenden Zustande … Nachricht ertheilet", ist ein bedeutendes historisches Zeugnis zur Sprache und Sozialgeschichte der Sinti und Roma in Deutschland aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Als innovativer Bildungsgegenstand steht es im weitläufigeren Kontext der Wahrnehmung von Minderheiten, ihrer Sozialgeschichte und ihrer Sprache, hier der über Jahrhunderte hinweg diskriminierten und erst Ende der 1990er Jahre als nationale Minderheit anerkannten Sinti und Roma.Das "Wörter=Buch von der Zigeuner=Sprache" von 1755 steht mit wenigen anderen Dokumenten am Beginn der Verschriftlichung des Romani. Es ist das erste alphabetisch geordnete Wörterbuch des Romani.- Das Bemühen des unbe-kannten Herausgebers richtet sich vor allem auf die lexikographische Dokumentation einer Minderheitensprache, der Schriftlichkeit zu der Zeit weitgehend fremd war. Die handschriftlichen Nachträge im Jenaer Druck sind Ausdruck wissenschaftlicher Anstrengungen um eine möglichst vollständige Erfassung des Romani-Wortschatzes nach den damals verfügbaren Quellen, unter denen das Ludolf-Glossar von 1691 eine besondere Rolle spielt. Hier ging es nicht um lexikographische Dokumentation, sondern um die Suche nach Hinweisen auf die Herkunft der Cingagori. Die Quellen des "Wörter=Buch von der Zigeuner=Sprache" von 1755 sind nicht mehr sicher nachweisbar. Einiges deutet darauf hin, dass sich der Herausgeber auf Befragungen von Gewährsleuten stützen konnte.- Jedenfalls hat er, so weit zu sehen, keine der bekannten und zeitgenössisch verfügbaren schriftlichen Quellen benutzt; das erledigt etwas später dann der Jenaer Glossator Christian Wilhelm Büttner bei seiner kompilatorischen Arbeit, die um Vervollständigung des Wortmaterials im Druck von 1755 bemüht ist. Die Sprache des Wörterbuches 1755 ist nach der romistischen Expertise von Norbert Boretzky deutsches Sinti. Das Glossar enthält etwa 360 voreuropäische Erbwörter; hinzu kommen etwa 40 Wortbildungen mit diesen Etyma. Zu den Erbwörtern kommen etwa 30 Graezismen und jeweils ca. 25 Slavismen und Germanismen. Wenn das im Wörterbuch dokumentierte Sinti tatsächlich auf Befragungen von Gewährsleuten beruhen sollte, hätte es damit ein hohes Maß an Authentizität. Von dem des Sinti unkundigen Explorators und Setzers wird es jedenfalls bei seiner Verschriftlichung bzw. bei Drucklegung verunstaltet, wie Norbert Boretzky im Einzelnen nachweisen konnte.-

    The book provides an encyclopaedic overview of the language contact between Slavic languages and Romani in Eastern, South-Eastern and East-Central Europe. It is based on Yaron Matras' pragmatic-functional approach to language contact and follows a new direction in Romani linguistics that conceives Romani as a subgroup of closely related languages rather than a single language.     "Mixing and Unmixing Languages uses the politics and practices of language to understand social hierarchies and social change in a post-conflict and post-socialist context. The book focuses on Roma in Prizren, Kosovo, where the author conducted long-term ethnographic fieldwork, using language learning as a central method. Shifts in language practices among this highly multilingual group have reflected the demise of Yugoslav socialism, the rise of ethno-nationalist politics and conflict, and the post-war reversal of power relations in Kosovo. Roma in Prizren nostalgically narrate a past of cosmopolitanism and employment in contrast to the present. Their position today is complex: while they stress their relative integration, this position is fragile in the face of nationalist politics and imported neoliberal economic policies. Within this context, Roma NGO workers have found an economic niche working on projects to protect multiculturalism and minorities, funded by international aid agencies, centred on Romani language. This book discusses the historical trajectory and current configurations of a Romani organisation in the town, the standardisation of Romani and the hierarchical organisation of linguistic forms and language learning, the self-representation of Roma and the 'gypsy' image through Romani language drama, and attitudes to purism, mixing and cosmopolitanism. Mixing and Unmixing Languages is suitable for academics and students in the areas of linguistic anthropology and linguistic ethnography, Romani studies, South-East European studies and sociolinguistics"--
