    Die Frühe Neuzeit ist bekannt dafür, dass sich die Kontrahenten in konfessionellen Streitfragen gegenseitig heftig attackierten. Ein herausragender Vertreter dieser Form der Auseinandersetzung war Martin Luther. In den zahlreichen von ihm verfassten Streitschriften zeigt er sich auch als großer Polemiker. Wie diese Art der sprachlich aggressiven Argumentation funktioniert, wird in der vorliegenden Studie detailliert vorgeführt. Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die wohl prominenteste Streitschrift Luthers von 1545 „Wider das Papsttum zu Rom vom Teufel gestiftet". Auf der Basis der „neuen Rhetorik" mit ihrer deutlich weiter gefassten Definition dessen, was unter Argumenten und Argumentation verstanden werden kann, konnten mehr als 60 verschiedene Argumentationsformen eruiert werden, die verschiedene Argumentationsfunktionen erfüllen. Die Studie möchte damit sowohl einen Beitrag zur Argumentationsanalyse und einen Vorschlag zur Modellierung von Argumentationen anbieten als auch eine praktische Detailanalyse sprachlicher Aggression, die nachvollziehbar macht, worin genau der in der Forschung häufig adressierte Grobianismus dieser Texte liegt. Martin Luther was not just a great reformer and bible translator, but also an extremely pugnacious and, in his argumentation, sometimes polemical contemporary. This form of linguistic aggression is very clearly expressed in his pamphlet "Against the Papacy of Rome, Founded by the Devil" of 1545. This volume reveals the linguistic means that he used to implement this by undertaking a practical argumentation analysis.

This work considers the function of the speeches in Thucydides’ history, and how they are related to the presentation of the historical facts. In a detailed analysis of the war speeches dealing with the origins of the Peloponnesian war in Thucydides’ first book, the author shows how the historian went further than Herodotus in functionalising the epic tradition of incorporating direct speech into the narrative for the processes of historical analysis.     The need for a new critical edition of Philip Melanchthon's philosophical works is particularly clear in the case of his writings on rhetoric. That Melanchthon played a central role in the transformation of the ancient discipline has been well established by historians. His writings on rhetoric have proven significant sources for several academic fields, including church history, Scriptural interpretation, the history of science, and the reception of classical literature. Remarkably, two of the three principal writings have not been published in their entirety since the sixteenth century. This volume collects critical editions of the three principal writings to provide a more complete record of Melanchthon’s teaching of rhetoric. It includes critical editions of De Rhetorica (1519), Institutiones Rhetoricae (1521), and Elementa Rhetorices (1531). In addition to the three principal writings, this volume collects a new edition, based on a 1911 edition by Hanns Zwicker, of Dispositiones Rhetoricae (c. 1553), a manuscript compilation of 161 model themes. Scholars will find in this volume the major sources for Melanchthon’s theory and practice of rhetorical instruction.

    The main focus of this book is the ancient formation and development of the canons of Greek historiography. It takes a fresh look on the modern debate on canonical literature and deals with Greek historiographical traditions in the works of ancient rhetors and literary critics. Writings on historiography by Cicero, Quintilian, and Dionysius of Halicarnassus are chiefly taken into account to explore the canons of Greek historians in Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Ages. Essential in canon-formation was the concept of classicism which took shape in the Age of Augustus, but whose earlier developments can be traced back to Isocrates, a model rhetor according to Dionysius at the end of the 1st century BC. The analysis explores also late-antique authors of school treatises and progymnasmata, a field where historiography had a pedagogical function. Previous studies on canonical literature have rarely considered historiography. This book examines not only the works of ancient historians and their legacy, but also the relationship between historiography, literary criticism, and the rhetorical tradition.

    The collection of the elder Seneca assembles "ations from scores of declaimers over a period spanning sixty years, from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. A view is offered onto a literary scene, for this critical period of Roman letters, that is numerously populated, highly interactive, and less dominated by just a few canonical authors. Despite this potential, modern readings have often lumped declaimers together en masse and organizational principles basic to Seneca’s collection remain overlooked. This volume attempts to ‘hear’ the individual speech of declaimers by focusing on two speakers—Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. A key organizing principle, informing both the collection and the practice of declamation, was the ‘shared locus’—a short passage, defined by verbal and argumentative ingredients, that gained currency among declaimers. Study of the operation of the shared locus carries several advantages: (1) we appreciate distinctions between declaimers; (2) we recognize shared passages as a medium of communication; and (3) the shared locus emerges as a community resource, explaining deep-seated connections between declamation and literary works.

    While the field of classics has informed and influenced the early developments of the field of psychology, these two disciplines presently enjoy fewer fruitful cross-fertilizations than one would expect. This book shows how the study of classics can help psychologists anchor their scientific findings in a historical, literary and philosophical framework, while insights of contemporary psychology offer new hermeneutic methods and explanations to classicists. This book is the first to date to offer a wide-ranging overview of the possibilities of marrying contemporary trends in psychology and classical studies. Advocating a critical dialogue between both disciplines, it offers novel reflections on psychotherapy, ancient philosophy, social psychology, literature and its theory, historiography, psychoanalysis, tragedy, the philosophy of mind, linguistics and reception.     Metaphorologie ist eine Methode der Textanalyse und Textbehandlung, die im Wesentlichen von Hans Blumenberg angeregt und praktiziert wurde, aber keine nennenswerte Wirkung hatte. Sie besitzt eine größere Reichweite und deutet tiefere Konsequenzen an, als bisher erkannt und umgesetzt worden ist. Das liegt an technischen Aspekten, die es weiter zu entwickeln gilt. Metapher, Mythos und Halbzeug sind Blumenbergs Kernbegriffe, an denen die Weiterführung einer analytischen Ausarbeitung ansetzen kann und hier in einer Folge selbständig lesbarer Kapitel ausgeführt werden. Sie führen von den ersten Ansätzen in der Philosophie Blumenbergs und ihrer technischen Ergänzung auf die exemplarischen Problemfelder von Lebenswelt, Politik und Ästhetik. Die Anordnung in Dreiergruppen entspricht den Ausgangsbegriffen des Titels. Sie differenziert nach historischen, politischen, ästhetischen Hinsichten, bevor diese in zwei Skizzen die Perspektive des Gesamtprojekts Metaphorologie eröffnen und in wissenschaftshistorischer und methodischer Hinsicht entwerfen.

For the modern reader, the use of direct speech, which is normally fictional, is one of the most remarkable features of ancient historiography. On the basis of a study of the rhetorical form and of the motifs employed in speeches by Herodotus and Thucydides, the author is able to expound systematically for the first time the similarities and differences in the employment of this characteristic tool in the works of the two historians, and to undertake a comparison with the options available to modern historical works. Um Augustins Argumentationstechnik in einen größeren bildungsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu stellen, werden seine Bildungsreflexion und die Tradition der antiken Rhetorik ins Auge gefaßt. This book approaches Augustine’s great work 0De civitate Dei0(The City of God) by considering the rhetorical techniques employed in it. It determines precisely the significance and consequences of Augustine's philosophical and theological statements on the relationship between humans and God, on freedom and responsibility and on Christian ethics by analyzing their argumentative function and contextual connection. The techniques of Augustine’s argumentation are then placed in a wider historical educational context by considering his reflection on education and the tradition of classical rhetoric. Bruno-Snell-Prize 2007 awarded to Christian Tornau.

    Biographical note: Björn Hambsch, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen. Johann Gottfried Herder ist bis heute Symbolfigur für die Überwindung "der" Rhetorik im Sturm und Drang. Doch dem widerspricht nicht nur Herders Redepraxis, sondern auch seine intensive Aneignung der Disziplin und sein Einspruch gegen ihre Verurteilung durch Kant. Unter Berücksichtigung des Gesamtwerks und zahlreicher handschriftlicher Quellen wird hier deshalb erstmals Herders Auseinandersetzung mit der antiken und zeitgenössischen Rhetorik aufgearbeitet und das komplexe Ineinander von Kritik, Anwendung und Transformation rhetorischen Theorie- und Praxiswissens in Herders Lebenswerk sichtbar gemacht. Up to now, Johann Gottfried Herder has been seen as a symbolic figure for overcoming "classical" rhetoric in German Storm and Stress. This view is however at variance both with Herder’s own rhetorical practice and with his intensive study of the discipline and his objection to Kant’s condemnation of it. Björn Hambsch bases his study on Herder’s complete works and numerous manuscript sources and provides the first analysis of Herder’s engagement with classical and modern rhetoric; he illuminates the complex interplay of critique, application and transformation of knowledge of rhetorical theory and practice in Herder’s life’s work.

Der Artikel "Rhetorik" wurde dem »Historischen Wörterbuch der Rhetorik«, Band 7 (2005) entnommen. Bei den übrigen Artikeln "Rhetorik, angewandte" bis "Rhetorizität" handelt es sich um einen Vorabdruck aus Band 8 des »Historischen Wörterbuchs der Rhetorik«.     In the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, speakers are often interrupted by emotional audiences (Luke 4:28; Acts 4:1; 7:54-57; 13:48; etc.). A comparative study of other Greek authors, from Homer to Josephus, reveals the high frequency and unique form of interruption in Luke's two volumes. Intentional interruption functions rhetorically to underscore the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the availability of salvation to the Gentiles, thus illuminating both Lukan theology and literary technique.     The birth of rhetoric istraced back to the 5th century B.C.E., when the first theoretical treatises on rhetoric were drafted. As early as in the speeches of the Iliad however, one canrecognize a deliberate and thoughtful use of refined rhetorical techniques, although these techniques were only codified at a much later date. The Homeric orators thus appear to have been influenced by unwritten but nevertheless valid rules of rhetoric. Based on detailed analysis of the most important speeches in the epic and related reflections by the poet, the author reveals Homer as a pioneer of rhetoric.     As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of Calpurnius Flaccus this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. Contributions from an international group of leading scholars from the field of Roman Literature and Rhetoric will explore the question of how Roman Declamation functions as a literary genre. This volume investigates the literary technique and the generic conventions of declamatio in its social, pedagocial and ethical context to determine “the poetics” of Roman Declamation. This volume is of interest to students and scholars of Rhetoric and Roman Literature.
