Highlighting the contribution of Third World intellectuals, it examines the changing nature of spatial power and cultural representation. The book is unique in the way it reconceptualizes geopolitical analysis from a post-colonial perspective. A key motif concerns tracing the historical impact of US power on the societies of the South especially the Latin South. Throughout, ideas and events, interventions and representations are woven together in a critique of the effects of Western power

"This book sets out to explain the most foundational aspect of international law in international relations terms. By doing so it goes straight to the central problem of international law - that although legally speaking all States are equal, socially speaking they clearly are not. As such it is an ambitious and controversial book which will be of interest to all international relations scholars and students and practitioners of international law."--Jacket PART 1: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE: Law and power -- Law and international relations -- Power and international law -- PART 2: INTERNATIONAL LAW AND THE APPLICATION OF POWER: The principle of jurisdiction -- The principle of personality -- The principle of reciprocity -- The principle of legitimate expectation -- PART 3: THE PROCESS OF CUSTOMARY INTERNATIONAL LAW: Fundamental problems of customary international law -- International relations and the process of customary international law -- Related issues -- Conclusions.

The nature of international political change --Stability and change --Growth and expansion --Equilibrium and decline --Hegemonic War and international change --Change and continuity in world politics. War and Change in World Politics introduces the reader to an important new theory of international political change. Arguing that the fundamental nature of international relations has not changed over the millennia, Professor Gilpin uses history, sociology, and economic theory to identify the forces causing change in the world order. The discussion focuses on the differential growth of power in the international system and the result of this unevenness. A shift in the balance of power - economic or military - weakens the foundations of the existing system, because those gaining power see the increasing benefits and the decreasing cost of changing the system. The result, maintains Gilpin, is that actors seek to alter the system through territorial, political, or economic expansion until the marginal costs of continuing change are greater than the marginal benefits. When states develop the power to change the system according to their interests they will strive to do so- either by increasing economic efficiency and maximizing mutual gain, or by redistributing wealth and power in their own favour

For over two hundred years the domination of some countries by others has been intrinsic to international relations, with national economic and political strength viewed as essential to a nation's survival and global position. Mastering Space identifies the essential features of this 'state-centredness' and suggests an optimistic alternative more in keeping with the contemporary post-Cold War climate. Drawing on recent geopolitical thinking, the authors claim that the dynamism of the international political economy has been obscured through excessive attention to the state as an unchanging actor

The Changing Complexions of Race /Langton, Marcia / Darby, Phillip --Contributors --Index Postcolonizing the International brings post-colonialism directly into engagement with contemporary international studies, while at the same time reflecting back on the discourse, noting certain blindspots and shortcomings in critique. Reversing the established agenda, it begins with the position of non-European societies and the legacies of colonialism. Two companion essays on knowledge formations about the international and the changing nature of the political are followed by challenging reinterpretations of contemporary global politics focusing on race, skewed development, cultural difference, and everyday life. Individual chapters speak to the significance of consumption and commodification, the need for redirecting Western development stategies, initiatives of the Tibetan cabinet in exile, and sexuality as metaphor.Contributors: Phillip Darby, Paul James, Gabriel Lafitte, Marcia Langton, Ashis Nandy, Edgar Ng, Sekai Nzenza, Simon Obendorf, Nabaneeta Dev Sen

Critical theory is one of the most important and exciting areas within the study of international relations. Its purpose is not only to describe how the world operates but also to help us imagine how we might achieve a more equitable and sustainable way of life. Presenting key concepts and thinkers, notably Theodor Adorno and Michel Foucault, this book provides an evaluation of the field and suggests how critical thinking can contribute to confronting the challenges of the twenty-first century. It argues that current critiques of critical theory in international relations can only be overcome if we engage with ideas from outside of the western tradition.
