    Die in den Kulturwissenschaften intensiv geführte Debatte um Weltliteratur kreist immer wieder um Fragen des Prozess- und Konstruktionscharakters weltliterarischer Kanonisierung. Um Aufschluss darüber zu erhalten, welche Faktoren dazu beitragen, ob ein Autor oder eine Autorin als Weltliteratur kanonisiert wird, ist die Arbeit am konkreten Material von zentraler Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich in diesem Zusammenhang insbesondere den Bruchstellen, die anhand der verzögerten Weltliteratur-Werdung der brasilianischen Autorin Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) anhand von Dokumenten zu Übersetzungs- und Zirkulationsprozessen sichtbar werden. Erst im 21. Jahrhundert erfährt das literarische Werk Lispectors breite internationale Anerkennung, nachdem es zuvor immer wieder in Vergessenheit geraten war. Welche Rolle spielte dabei das brasilianische Portugiesisch als Ausgangssprache, welche die so eigene Ästhetik Clarice Lispectors im Übersetzungskontext und welche ihre Rolle als Frau? In der Analyse des komplexen Zusammenwirkens solcher Faktoren ermöglicht der Band eine neue Perspektive auf die Problematiken weltliterarischer Kanonisierungsprozesse im 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert. So beeinflusste der Protestantismus nachhaltig soziale Strukturen, kulturelle Wahrnehmungsmuster, Rechtsnormen, Wissenschaftsideale, künstlerische Ausdrucksmittel und Identitätsbildungen. Die beiden gewichtigen Bände dokumentieren den internationalen und interdisziplinären Kongress »Kulturelle Wirkungen der Reformation«, der im August 2017 von den Universitäten Halle-Wittenberg, Jena und Leipzig an der Stiftung LEUCOREA in Lutherstadt Wittenberg durchgeführt wurde. Dessen Beiträge - u. a. von Udo Sträter, Charlotte Methuen, Martin Heckel, Herman Selderhuis, Rudolf von Sinner, Daniel Jeyaraj und Jochen Hörisch - machen deutlich, wie die protestantischen Konfessionsmilieus seit 500 Jahren kulturell wirksam sind, aber auch, wie sie ihrerseits auf gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen reagieren. The Reformation not only changed theology and the church, but set in motion a fundamental transformation, which encompassed every aspect of society. Thus, Protestantism had an enduring influence on social structures, patterns of perception, normative ideas, scientific concepts, scopes for artistic expression and cultural identities. The announced proceedings document the international and interdisciplinary congress »Cultural Impacts of the Reformation« held in August 2017 by the universities of Halle-Wittenberg, Jena and Leipzig at the LEUCOREA Foundation in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.     Die in den Kulturwissenschaften intensiv geführte Debatte um Weltliteratur kreist immer wieder um Fragen des Prozess- und Konstruktionscharakters weltliterarischer Kanonisierung. Um Aufschluss darüber zu erhalten, welche Faktoren dazu beitragen, ob ein Autor oder eine Autorin als Weltliteratur kanonisiert wird, ist die Arbeit am konkreten Material von zentraler Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich in diesem Zusammenhang insbesondere den Bruchstellen, die anhand der verzögerten Weltliteratur-Werdung der brasilianischen Autorin Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) anhand von Dokumenten zu Übersetzungs- und Zirkulationsprozessen sichtbar werden. Erst im 21. Jahrhundert erfährt das literarische Werk Lispectors breite internationale Anerkennung, nachdem es zuvor immer wieder in Vergessenheit geraten war. Welche Rolle spielte dabei das brasilianische Portugiesisch als Ausgangssprache, welche die so eigene Ästhetik Clarice Lispectors im Übersetzungskontext und welche ihre Rolle als Frau? In der Analyse des komplexen Zusammenwirkens solcher Faktoren ermöglicht der Band eine neue Perspektive auf die Problematiken weltliterarischer Kanonisierungsprozesse im 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert.     This book sets out to provide a matrix for surveying the literary treatment of biblical tropes. It supplies an overview of the literary reception of the Bible from the earliest times right through to contemporary writers such as Jeanette Winterson and Colm Tóibín, traces the literary reception and treatment of the Book of Job; the figure of Uriah in the narrative of David and Bathsheba; the figure of Lilith; and Angels of Death and of Mercy. These are all handled as specimen histories. This is followed by an examination of the output of several specific early and later Twentieth-Century rewriters of the Bible. In the last chapters, three sets of other writers under particular headings ("the Great Disrupters" etc.) are grouped together with a view to finding common characteristics as well as unique features in their approach to biblical tropes and provide conclusions and suggestions for further research. -- Description based on online resource.

This collection of essays by Carol A. Newsom explores the indispensable role that rhetoric and hermeneutics play in the production and reception of biblical and Second Temple literature. Some of the essays are methodological and programmatic, while others provide extended case studies. Because rhetoric is, as Kenneth Burke put it, »a strategy for encompassing a situation,« the analysis of rhetoric illumines the ways in which texts engage particular historical moments, shape and reshape communities, and even construct new models of self and agency. The essays in this book not only explore how ancient texts hermeneutically engage existing traditions but also how they themselves have become the objects of hermeneutical transformation in contexts ranging from ancient sectarian Judaism to the politics of post-World War I and II Germany and America to modern film criticism and feminist re-reading.

    The present study analyses recent criticisms against the use of modern-historical methodologies in Biblical Studies. These methodologies abstract from the historical horizon of the researcher. In order to relate properly to the historicality of the researcher, historical objectivism needs to be transformed into historical hermeneutics. Recent developments in the historical methodology of biblical scholars are unable to reckon with the historicality of the researcher due to the partial or incorrect implementation of Gadamer's views on reception history. I analyse the views of Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and Gadamer on historicality and contend that the study of reception history is a necessary condition for conducting historical study from within the limits of our historicality. Reception history should not be a distinct methodological step to study the "Nachleben" of biblical texts, but needs to clarify how the understanding of these texts is already effected by their history of interpretation. The awareness of the presuppositions that have guided previous interpretations of biblical texts enables us to be confronted by their alterity. This confrontation calls for a synthesis between reception-historical and historical-critical methodology that introduces a new paradigm for conducting historical study in Biblical Studies in dialogue with other theological disciplines.

The narrative describes Jesus as child born of adultery, a charlatan, and a false prophet who performed would-be miracles through the use of magic. Throughout the centuries, the story aroused the ire of anti-Jewish polemicists, delighted anti-clerical authors, and was viewed by Jewish scholars as a subject of embarrassment. Toledot Yeshu presents us with a formidable counter-history of the origins of Christianity. In the eighteenth century, Voltaire went so far as to proclaim that Toledot Yeshu , however extravagant, was perhaps more truthful than the Christian gospels.
