    In der Textlinguistik stehen heute zahlreiche analytische Orientierungen mehr oder weniger unverbunden neben einander. Diese unbefriedigende Situation ist der Ausgangspunkt für den theoretischen Neuansatz, der in der vorliegenden Studie entwickelt wird. Dieser besteht in einer Theorie der Textkommunikation, die auf zwei grundlegenden Prämissen aufbaut: Textkommunikation ist eine soziale Wirklichkeit sui generis; und die Konstitution dieser sozialen Wirklichkeit erfolgt im Medium der Schrift. Textkommunikation ist Kommunikation mit und durch Schrift. Die Grundbedingung dieser Kommunikation ist nicht die Anwesenheit der Kommunikationsteilnehmer, sondern die Lesbarkeit des Textes, die im Moment der Lektüre aufgrund von Lesbarkeitshinweisen zustande gebracht wird. Der Text ist in dieser Sicht nichts anderes als das Ensemble solcher Lesbarkeitshinweise, die beim Lesen situations- und kontextabhängig ausgewertet werden. Lesbarkeitshinweise machen deshalb den Gegenstand der Textlinguistik aus. Die vorgelegte Theorie der Textkommunikation ermöglicht es, den Lektüreprozess als genuin soziales Geschehen zu erfassen, dessen Fluchtpunkt nicht das jeweils konkrete Textverständnis eines empirischen Lesers ist, sondern die soziale Lesbarkeit The study begins from two premises not previously considered together: that written communication represents a social reality sui generis, and that this social reality is constituted in the medium of writing. The authors invoke a new understanding of the concept of readability as a fundamental condition for communication with and through writing, and elaborate its theoretical and empirical implications

    In der Textlinguistik stehen heute zahlreiche analytische Orientierungen mehr oder weniger unverbunden neben einander. Diese unbefriedigende Situation ist der Ausgangspunkt für den theoretischen Neuansatz, der in der vorliegenden Studie entwickelt wird. Dieser besteht in einer Theorie der Textkommunikation, die auf zwei grundlegenden Prämissen aufbaut: Textkommunikation ist eine soziale Wirklichkeit sui generis; und die Konstitution dieser sozialen Wirklichkeit erfolgt im Medium der Schrift. Textkommunikation ist Kommunikation mit und durch Schrift. Die Grundbedingung dieser Kommunikation ist nicht die Anwesenheit der Kommunikationsteilnehmer, sondern die Lesbarkeit des Textes, die im Moment der Lektüre aufgrund von Lesbarkeitshinweisen zustande gebracht wird. Der Text ist in dieser Sicht nichts anderes als das Ensemble solcher Lesbarkeitshinweise, die beim Lesen situations- und kontextabhängig ausgewertet werden. Lesbarkeitshinweise machen deshalb den Gegenstand der Textlinguistik aus. Die vorgelegte Theorie der Textkommunikation ermöglicht es, den Lektüreprozess als genuin soziales Geschehen zu erfassen, dessen Fluchtpunkt nicht das jeweils konkrete Textverständnis eines empirischen Lesers ist, sondern die soziale Lesbarkeit The study begins from two premises not previously considered together: that written communication represents a social reality sui generis, and that this social reality is constituted in the medium of writing. The authors invoke a new understanding of the concept of readability as a fundamental condition for communication with and through writing, and elaborate its theoretical and empirical implications

    In this paper, we analyze whether the complexity of tax bills affects financial markets. Based on the Flesch-Kincaid grade level of the 32 tax bills identified by Romer and Romer (2010) in the period 1962-2003, we assess the relationship between tax bills' complexity and financial markets using an event study approach. Our results show a negative (positive) and significant relationship between the present value of tax bills and changes in the 10-year government bond yields (S&P 500 returns). The magnitude of this relationship increases over time, suggesting that market participants underreact at first and need a couple of days to digest the information contained in the tax bills. This delay can be explained by the textual characteristics of the bills in the case of the 10-year yields as a lower readability partly offsets the negative relationship for up to three days after the signing of a tax bill, but not thereafter. In the case of the stock market, we find similar offsetting evidence, but only for a part of the readability measures employed in this paper.

    We use data on speeches held by members of the European Central Bank's (ECB) Executive Board to analyze whether clarity of central bank communication has increased over time. Employing readability measures as proxy variables, we find that clarity of information provision is trending upward since the inception of the ECB. The increase is gradual, rather than being induced by changes in the board composition or major macroeconomic events. Clarity is higher for speeches aimed at general audiences and for speeches by female speakers. We also show that media sentiment about the ECB is negatively related to complexity.

    Using novel data on speeches held by members of the European Central Bank's Executive Board, we investigate whether monetary policy transparency has increased over time. With respect to the general public as the target audience, our findings suggest that the European Central Bank successfully improved the frequency and clarity of information provision since its inception. The increase in transparency is gradual, rather than being induced by changes in the Executive Board's composition or major economic events such as the Great Recession. However, the clarity of speeches in recent years is still fairly low. Moreover, our findings indicate that clarity decreased under Christine Lagarde's presidency following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. We conclude that while the European Central Bank was able to increase transparency over time, further improvements in clarity are required to make monetary policy truly accessible to the broad public.
