Throughout the twentieth century, artists have become increasingly concerned with the search for meaning in a fragmented, unfathomable world. In the plays of Harold Pinter, that search leads to a struggle for security through the control of territory and of people. By examining many of Pinter's major works, Cahn shows that this struggle often manifests itself in a gender battle, where men dominate the physical arena, but women control the emotional battleground. This disparity creates tension that is at once comic and unnerving. Most importantly, Pinter dramatizes how these gender differences are not social constructs but rather inherent qualities. The conflicts that arise from these innate values reflect our eternal quest for identify and, ultimately, meaning.

"Putting History to the Question is the result of Neill's ongoing investigation of how literature provides a revealing portrait of nation, social order, and empire, and how the flow of literary discourse affects the progress of history. Covering dramatic works by Shakespeare, John Fletcher, Philip Massinger, and others - and reflecting upon subjects rangings from social attitudes toward racial difference and adultery to the politics of mercantilism and the hierarchy of master/servant relationships - the book reenergizes the discussion of Renaissance drama and history." "For the many scholars and students accustomed to reading from photocopies of Neill's writings. This book addresses three matters of fundamental importance for an understanding of Harold Pinter's work - how language functions in Pinter's plays, what the relationship is between language and subjectivity in the plays, and what the plays reveal about how language serves as a vehicle for cultural power. Pinter's work rejects any attempt to conceptualize language in terms of reference, expression, or communication. Rather, his plays exhibit a semiotic understanding of language that demands his audience focus not only on parole, the individual speech act, but also on langue, language as structured system that both enables and constrains parole. The langue that Pinter explores is the ensemble of codes, dominant discourses and structures of representation, and fragments of ideology that give voice to cultural power, creating the speaking subject in the image of that power For all their attempts to "own" language, Pinter's characters discover that words constitute alienable property; that language forms, de-forms, and re-forms subjectivity; that, as a system preceding the individual, language carries embedded within it the values, desires, and imperatives of the Other - the dominant cultural order. By introducing questions of subject position and ideology into his discussion, author Marc Silverstein shows how the plays exhibit a political dimension largely ignored by the bulk of Pinter criticism, which attempts to classify his oeuvre as a form of absurdist drama. It is Silverstein's contention that Pinter does not concern himself with the fate of the individual lost in an incomprehensible and meaningless universe (the "absurdist" Pinter), but instead explores the vicissitudes of living within ideological, discursive, and social structures that always exceed the subject Through detailed readings of The Birthday Party, The Collection, The Homecoming, Old Times, One for the Road, and Mountain Language, Silverstein argues that what is at stake in these plays is the status of cultural power itself. The plays insistently raise the question, does there exist any possibility for the kind of resistance that can dismantle the network of cultural power, or is that network unassailably monolithic? While arguing that Pinter's plays appear to adopt the latter position, the author emphasizes that these plays still have valuable political lessons to teach. At a moment when much Ideologiekritik naively equates the demystification of ideology and the unveiling of contradictions with the inevitable collapse of that field, Pinter's plays compel us to consider a more viable mode of intervention within cultural formations that seem infinitely recuperable

William Wordsworth's poems are inhabited by beggars, vagrants, peddlers, and paupers. This book analyzes how a few key poems from Wordsworth's early years constitute a direct engagement with and intervention into the politics of poverty and reform that swept the social, political, and cultural landscape in England during the 1790s. Harrison brilliantly demonstrates the socio-political significance of Wordsworth's poetry as a critical force in the debate over the Poor Laws, offering evidence that nineteenth-century readers recognized both the reactionary and utopian potentials of his work, depending upon their political orientation.

Although Milton's three major poems, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, appeared well into the Restoration era, they have long been regarded as belonging philosophically to the earlier seventeenth century. The canonical view is of Milton as a relic in the Restoration - either belated humanist or belated Puritan. Addressing this long-standing anomaly of literary history, Historicizing Milton shows how Milton's major poems respond specifically and powerfully to royalist spectacles of the 1660s and 1670s, spectacles that were intended as displays of divinely approved monarchical power. Laura Lunger Knoppers traces such public spectacles as the execution of the regicides, the exhumation of Cromwell, the punishment of fifth monarchists, and the coronation triumph of Charles II. Drawing on a range of sources, including letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, sermons, royal proclamations, and parliamentary accounts, Knoppers reconstructs the discourses that interpreted and contested spectacles of power and punishment. Milton's poems are part of this oppositional discourse, Knoppers argues, and his revisions of such key terms as martyrdom, treason, joy, glory, and conquest boldly and defiantly challenge the spectacles by which the monarchy constituted and conveyed its power. Questioning the nature of earthly spectacle altogether, Milton rewrites display as inner witness before God alone. His radically iconoclastic art creates a mode of antispectacle, not only exposing but also redefining and appropriating the spectacles of state.

This book is a collection of essays addressing the subjects of race and racial difference in English Renaissance culture. Working from historicist, materialist, and feminist perspectives, reading texts as well as cultural practices, the authors present a detailed and sophisticated understanding of early modern views of what race meant. Beyond the question of how race was useful to English self-fashioning, the essays in this book are also concerned with how the practices of English culture helped endow notions of race with meaning. The authors here have assembled suggestive evidence of how race emerged from economics, technology, dramatic performance and popular culture, as well as how it was presented in more traditional kinds of literary evidence. That evidence is broad; although most of the essays here are centrally concerned with a single Shakespearean play, those plays are textualized within rich webs of racial discourse from the classical as well as the Renaissance world. The essays juxtapose noncanonical drama with these Shakespearean plays and, in one case, devote major attention to a work outside a traditionally conceived canon of Renaissance literature. The effect is to emphasize the breadth and pervasiveness of racial discourse, the rich resourcefulness enabling its production.

The English Novel in History 1840-1895 refocuses in cultural terms a particularly powerful achievement in Victorian narrative - its construction of history as a social common denominator. Using interdisciplinary material from literature, art, political philosophy, religion, music, economic theory and physical science, this text explores how nineteenth-century narrative shifts from one construction of time to another and, in the process, reformulates fundamental modern ideas of identity, nature and society.

"Until now, little attention has been paid to the political and ideological significance of the medieval exemplum, a brief narrative form used to illustrate a moral. Through a study of four major works in the Chaucerian tradition (the Canterbury Tales, John Gower's Confessio Amantis, Thomas Hoccleve's Regement of Princes, and Lydgate's Fall of Princes), Professor Scanlon redefines the exemplum as "a narrative enactment of cultural authority." He traces its development through the two strands of the medieval Latin tradition which the Chaucerians appropriate: the sermon exemplum, and the public exemplum of the Mirrors of Princes. In doing so, he reveals how Chaucer and his successors used these two forms of the exemplum to explore the differences between clerical authority and lay power, and to establish the moral and cultural authority of their emergent vernacular tradition."--BOOK JACKET.
