"This book chronicles the rise and the development of postcolonial agency since Africa's encounter with Western modernity through African and African diaspora literature and film. Using African and African diasporic imaginaries (creative writings, autobiographies, polemical writings, and filmic media) the author shows how African subjects have resisted enslavement and colonial domination over the past centuries, and how they have sought to reshape "global modernity". Authors and film makers whose works are examined in detail include Olaudah Equiano, William Sheppard, Haile Gerima, Wole Soyinka, Dani Kouyaté, Chris Abani, Chimamanda Adichie, Leila Aboulela, Imbolo Mbue, Alain Mabanckou, Abdourahman Waberi, Marie NDiaye, and Fatou Diome. Providing a critical study of nativism, hybridity and post-hybrid conjunctive consciousness, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of African and African diasporic literature, history, and cultural studies"--...

Das Buch überwindet damit einige der Mängel der bisherigen ethnologischen Auseinandersetzung mit Raum The ratio of representation and otherness and the problem of space in colonial and postcolonial contexts are the focus of this study. At the interface of ethnology, philosophy, and media studies, Carena Brenner determines the function of ethnology in the context of spatial politics. Based on individual films, she works out the question of how a pan-spatial production of meaning under conditions of globalization can be ethnographically recorded and displayed. The book thus overcomes some of the shortcomings of previous ethnographic examination of space

"In the years following Indian independence in 1947, art cinema was seen as central to the development and future of the new nation. Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray came to the fore as did a host of film societies and publications aimed at promoting a new kind of film culture that would offer a distinct alternative to the popular movies coming out of Bombay. Indian art film would not only bring the new nation international prestige but would create responsible and discerning individuals capable of exercising and combining aesthetic and political judgments. Good films, it was believed, could produce good citizens. However, as Rochona Majumdar argues, the liberal faith of progress championed by Indian elites in the 1950s and early 1960s would soon unravel as the promises of postcolonial development, justice, and prosperity receded, giving rise to civil unrest and political violence. Rather than promoting a progressive view of history, the three leading Indian filmmakers of the period - Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, and Satyajit Ray -- communicated a sense of a postcolonial present characterized by multiple contradictory possibilities. Ray, Sen, and Ghatak's disillusionment from their prior commitment to filmmaking as integral to the development of India anticipated a new way of conceiving ideas of postcolonial history and time that anticipated later works by historians and theorists. Ultimately, these three filmmakers stand out for acknowledging that the postcolonial consensus was in disarray, and with it art cinema's previous certainty about its pedagogic, political, and historic purpose

"This accessible and dynamic collection of essays explores some new possibilities for understanding postcolonial traumas. It examines representations of both personal and collective traumas around the globe from Palestinian, Caribbean, African American, South African, Maltese, Algerian, Indian, Australian and British writers, directors and artists. Contributors investigate a range of genres and types of representation, including the novel, short story, television and stage drama, graphic novel, film and fictionalised memoir. As a collection, these essays necessarily share some important concerns regarding past, current and even future traumas facing the postcolonial world, but they also recognise the diversity of traumatic experiences, and authors are attentive to the specifics of location, historical and cultural contexts"..

Examines how postcolonial filmmakers negotiate national identities in Hollywood-supported Victorian literature adaptations. This book examines postcolonial filmmakers adapting Victorian literature in Hollywood to contend with both the legacy of British imperialism and the influence of globalized media entities. Since decolonization, postcolonial writers and filmmakers have re-appropriated and adapted texts of the Victorian era as a way to 'write back' to the imperial centre. At the same time, the rise of international co-productions and multinational media corporations have called into question the effectiveness of postcolonial rewritings of canonical texts as a resistance strategy. With case studies of films like Gunga Din, Dracula 2000, The Portrait of a Lady, Vanity Fair and Slumdog Millionaire, this book argues that many postcolonial filmmakers have extended resistance beyond revisionary adaptation, opting to interrogate Hollywood's genre conventions and production methods to address how globalization has affected and continues to influence their homelands

In Flesh and Fish Blood Subramanian Shankar breaks new ground in postcolonial studies by exploring the rich potential of vernacular literary expressions. Shankar pushes beyond the postcolonial Anglophone canon and works with Indian literature and film in English, Tamil, and Hindi to present one of the first extended explorations of representations of caste, including a critical consideration of Tamil Dalit (so-called untouchable) literature. Shankar shows how these vernacular materials are often unexpectedly politically progressive and feminist, and provides insight on these oft-overlooked—but nonetheless sophisticated—South Asian cultural spaces. With its calls for renewed attention to translation issues and comparative methods in uncovering disregarded aspects of postcolonial societies, and provocative remarks on humanism and cosmopolitanism, Flesh and Fish Blood opens up new horizons of theoretical possibility for postcolonial studies and cultural analysis
