    The book addresses the relationship between the literary representations of North Greenland and the Inughuit people in Knud Rasmussen’s expedition accounts The New People and My Travel Diary and the historical process of Danish colonization of North Greenland. The aim of reading both works is to demonstrate the ambivalence in representing North Greenland and the Inughuit, and, through this, to prove the existence of common mechanisms and cultural practices connected to mapping of the Other in a situation of asymmetric power relations. Applying a textual approach founded on colonial discourse analysis, the reading proves that literary mappings of geography and identity can never be stable, as they are in the state of constant transformation, perpetually recontextualized and reinvented.

    Dieser interdisziplinäre Open Access-Band beschäftigt sich mit den vielfältigen Konzepten und Methoden des Übersetzens als zentraler und ubiquitärer Kulturtechnik der Frühen Neuzeit (1450–1800). In fünfzehn Einzelstudien werden gesellschaftliche Leitvorstellungen, Wahrnehmungsmuster und Kommunikationsformen erforscht, die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert durch Praktiken des Übersetzens etabliert werden und bis in die Gegenwart von prägender Bedeutung sind. Behandelt werden etwa jiddische und kymrische Bibelüber­setzungen, tamilische und zapotekische Missionstexte sowie französische und arabische Kartenmaterialien. This interdisciplinary open-access collection addresses the multifarious concepts and methods of translation as a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period (1450–1800). It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today. The research spectrum encompasses such diverse topics as Yiddish and Cymric translations of the Bible, Tamil and Zapotec mission texts, and French and Arabic cartographic material.

    In einer ländlichen Region Ugandas (Busoga) versuchen die Menschen ihren durch den zunehmenden Einfluss der Globalisierung erschwerten Lebensbedingungen zu begegnen und sich Handlungsspielräume zu schaffen. Aus postkolonialer Perspektive untersucht die Autorin die Rolle solidarischen Wirtschaftens hierbei. Dessen Nutzen als Überlebensstrategie wird ebenso beleuchtet wie sein Potenzial, Alternativen zu konventionellen Ansätzen wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung zu denken. An die Stelle westlichen „Expertentums“ tritt gelebte Erfahrung aus dem globalen Süden. Die Autorin beschreibt den Einfluss der Globalisierung auf den Alltag der Bevölkerung sowie auf soziale Ungleichheiten und stellt ihren postkolonialen Forschungsansatz detailliert dar. In a rural region of Uganda (Busoga), people are trying to manage their everyday lives and gain agency despite the negative effects of globalisation on their living conditions. In this book, from a postcolonial perspective, the author examines the role of solidarity-based economic activities in that process. She illuminates both the usefulness of solidarity-based economic activities as a survival strategy and their potential to offer alternatives to conventional approaches to economic development. Western ‘expertise’ is replaced by lived experiences from the global South. The author describes the influence of globalisation on the everyday life of the population as well as on social inequalities and presents her postcolonial research approach in detail.

    This book deals with the challenges for history education arising from the centrality of colonialism in shaping the modern world. It breaks new ground by bringing together an international range of national studies on the legacies of colonialism that permeate the way how colonial history is thought and taught at schools. The case studies examine the representation, understanding and use of colonial heritage from different angles: They focus on European and non-European states as well as on states with and without colonial past as colonizers or colonized. Thus, and with its wide range of approaches – postcolonial theory, memory studies, educational media studies, teaching practice – this volume makes an essential research contribution to the ongoing international debate on the position of colonial history in present and future history education.

It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today.     In einer ländlichen Region Ugandas (Busoga) versuchen die Menschen ihren durch den zunehmenden Einfluss der Globalisierung erschwerten Lebensbedingungen zu begegnen und sich Handlungsspielräume zu schaffen. Aus postkolonialer Perspektive untersucht die Autorin die Rolle solidarischen Wirtschaftens hierbei. Dessen Nutzen als Überlebensstrategie wird ebenso beleuchtet wie sein Potenzial, Alternativen zu konventionellen Ansätzen wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung zu denken. An die Stelle westlichen "Expertentums" tritt gelebte Erfahrung aus dem globalen Süden. Die Autorin beschreibt den Einfluss der Globalisierung auf den Alltag der Bevölkerung sowie auf soziale Ungleichheiten und stellt ihren postkolonialen Forschungsansatz detailliert dar. In a rural region of Uganda (Busoga), people are trying to manage their everyday lives and gain agency despite the negative effects of globalisation on their living conditions. In this book, from a postcolonial perspective, the author examines the role of solidarity-based economic activities in that process. She illuminates both the usefulness of solidarity-based economic activities as a survival strategy and their potential to offer alternatives to conventional approaches to economic development. Western ‘expertise is replaced by lived experiences from the global South. The author describes the influence of globalisation on the everyday life of the population as well as on social inequalities and presents her postcolonial research approach in detail.
