    The internet has fundamentally transformed society in the past 25 years, yet existing theories of mass or interpersonal communication do not work well in understanding a digital world. Nor has this understanding been helped by disciplinary specialization and a continual focus on the latest innovations. Ralph Schroeder takes a longer-term view, synthesizing perspectives and findings from various social science disciplines in four countries: the United States, Sweden, India and China. His comparison highlights, among other observations, that smartphones are in many respects more important than PC-based internet uses. Social Theory after the Internet focuses on everyday uses and effects of the internet, including information seeking and big data, and explains how the internet has gone beyond traditional media in, for example, enabling Donald Trump and Narendra Modi to come to power. Schroeder puts forward a sophisticated theory of the role of the internet, and how both technological and social forces shape its significance. He provides a sweeping and penetrating study, theoretically ambitious and at the same time always empirically grounded.The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of digital media and society, the internet and politics, and the social implications of big data.

    "The authors of this edited volume focus on the emergence of populist discourses, coming from movements or parties from Romance-speaking countries in Europe and in Latin America. By combining linguistics, social and political sciences in a discourse analytical approach, the sixteen papers enlighten the mechanisms behind populist discourses yielding from different socio-cultural and political contexts. The common denominator of the studies is the focus on the discursive and rhetorical characteristics of recently emerged movements of populism in both continents. Investigating expressions of these political movements is highly relevant in today’s society, where the growing number of populist discourses has become a pre-eminent issue, alongside people’s increasing insecurity regarding future political and environmental challenges. The primary audience of this volume are researchers working in the fields of political discourse analysis; however, this book may benefit anybody with interest in language in politics.

Doch was genau meint der schillernde Begriff »Systemvertrauen« und welche Konsequenzen hat ein Mangel desselben? Malte G. Schmidt folgt diesen Fragen aus einer gesellschaftstheoretischen Perspektive. Er zeigt die sozialintegrative Bedeutung des Journalismus auf und prüft, inwieweit dieser seine Rolle als Vertrauensvermittler im neoliberalen Kapitalismus erfüllen kann.     "Most scholarship on the mass migrations of African Americans and southern whites during and after the Great Depression treats those migrations as separate phenomena, strictly divided along racial lines. In this engaging interdisciplinary work, Erin Royston Battat argues instead that we should understand these Depression-era migrations as interconnected responses to the capitalist collapse and political upheavals of the early twentieth century. During the 1930s and 1940s, Battat shows, writers and artists of both races created migration stories specifically to bolster the black-white Left alliance. Defying rigid critical categories, Battat considers a wide variety of media, including literary classics by John Steinbeck and Ann Petry, "lost" novels by Sanora Babb and William Attaway, hobo novellas, images of migrant women by Dorothea Lange and Elizabeth Catlett, popular songs, and histories and ethnographies of migrant shipyard workers.     Long description: Phänomene des Mehrdeutigen sind für die Kunst bestimmend, faszinierend und anspruchsvoll. Herausfordernd sind zugleich die vieldeutigen Strukturen in global entgrenzter Kultur, sozialen Ordnungen und Identitätsvorstellungen. Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe! Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes aus Kunst, Pädagogik, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaft diskutieren, inwiefern Ambiguitäten in Kunst und Politik strukturähnlich sind und eine pädagogische Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst zugleich demokratische Haltungen bilden kann Biographical note: Ansgar Schnurr (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1977, forscht und lehrt als Professor für Kunstpädagogik an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich transkultureller Kunstpädagogik, Studien zur ästhetischen Dimension von Diversität und Ungleichheit sowie Schnittstellen und Transferwirkungen zur politischen Bildung. Sabine Dengel (Dr. phil.), geb. 1967, ist wissenschaftliche Referentin für politische und kulturelle Bildung bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung und Leiterin der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur«. Sie hat Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Philosophie an der Universität des Saarlandes studiert und über politische Erziehung im Deutschen Kaiserreich, dem NS-Staat und der DDR promoviert. Ihre inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen in der modernen politischen Theorie, der Theorie politischer und kultureller Bildung, der (historischen) Bildungsforschung sowie der Demokratietheorie. Julia Hagenberg, geb. 1967, Kunsthistorikerin und Pädagogin, leitet die Abteilung Bildung in der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Die Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit und Lehrtätigkeit liegen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunstvermittlung und kuratorischer Praxis sowie im Bereich partizipativer Bildungskonzepte und der gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension von Museumsarbeit. Linda Kelch, geb. 1988, hat Politikwissenschaft und Philosophie studiert und ist wissenschaftliche Referentin bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) und arbeitet dort in der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur« zur Schnittstelle von kultureller und politischer Bildung sowie zu Phänomenen der Kulturalisierung und Konzepten der transkulturellen Bildung

    Rechtspopulismus und Autoritarismus, Auseinandersetzungen um »Identitätspolitik«, die Digitalisierung der öffentlichen Debatte und die Macht von Verschwörungstheorien führen zu tiefgreifenden sozialen, kulturellen und politischen Transformationsprozessen. Für die Untersuchung dieser Transformationen sind die Theorien des Politischen und der radikalen Demokratie besonders geeignet, da sie die grundsätzliche Fragilität der liberalen Ordnung analysieren. Fraglich ist jedoch, ob die radikaldemokratische Forderung nach einer Disruption der liberalen Ordnung die richtige Antwort auf die beschriebenen Transformationen ist. Die Beiträge unternehmen eine kritische Revision der Theorien des Politischen und erschließen damit das gegenwartsanalytische Potential radikaldemokratischer Ansätze für die 2020er Jahre.

    The large-scale use of semantic transfer and inversion as rhetorical tactics is particularly prevalent in right-wing discourses and populist »alternative knowledge« production. The contributors to this volume analyze processes of re-semanticizing received meanings, effectually re-coding those meanings. They investigate to what extent rhetorical maneuvers serve to establish new and powerful belief systems beyond rational and democratic control. In addition to the contemporary rightwing and conspiracy narratives, the contributions examine the discursive fields around conceptions of human nature and the deep past, population politics, gender conceptions, use of land, identity politics, nationhood, and cultural heritage.
