Y su eficacia se debe, en buena medida, a que ofrece una forma convincente de explicar el mundo, reflejar las preocupaciones y los miedos de los ciudadanos y proponerles una salida concreta. Vale tanto para el pueblo que se moviliza contra el FMI como para el que lo hace contra los inmigrantes.A partir del análisis exhaustivo de discursos políticos de los presidentes latinoamericanos de principios del siglo XXI, y de líderes contemporáneos de los Estados Unidos y de Europa, María Esperanza Casullo –politóloga, docente universitaria, especialista en temas de democracia y sistemas de partidos– muestra cómo, en el sur y en el norte, en economías sólidas y en naciones desiguales, el “mito populista” construye una idea de pueblo, señala a sus enemigos y plantea acciones para redimir a un país traicionado por fuerzas internas y externas que intentan desviarlo de su destino de éxito.Además, la autora encuentra rasgos de estas estrategias en los discursos de gobiernos liberal-tecnocráticos, como el de Cambiemos en la Argentina. Persuasivamente, Casullo reconstruye el derrotero del discurso macrista, de un “Mauricio” popular a un presidente que hizo uso de dosis nada desdeñables de populismo, y luego a un giro conservador en el que las promesas de un futuro venturoso se transformaron en llamados moralizantes al sacrificio para no volver al pasado.En un lenguaje accesible, que evita tanto la condena como la celebración sin matices, la autora atraviesa con equilibrio un campo plagado de análisis simplistas y propone al lector un recorrido original y atrapante que desafía su sentido común. Como escribe Casullo, lejos de ser una anomalía propia de países subdesarrollados, el populismo es un fenómeno tan antiguo como la propia democracia, un subproducto inevitable del juego del poder y una posibilidad siempre presente en el abanico de las estrategias políticas, que se vuelve especialmente atractiva en tiempos de crisis y de fragmentación social como los contemporáneos
