"As contributors to this volume prove, Shakespeare's language of the self relies on descriptions of and reactions to facial expressions and features. An analysis of Shakespeare's treatment of faces has implications for our understanding of the context in which he wrote, and for the ongoing interpretation and production of the plays. By bringing together historians, theorists of performance and critics interested in material culture and philosophies of self, this book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of attitudes towards embodiment in Shakespeare's England" -- Introduction: Shakespeare and the power of the face / James A. Knapp -- Part. I. Powerful faces. 1. "Thy face is mine": faces and fascination in Shakespeare's plays / Sibylle Baumbach; 2. Fashioning the face: embodiment and desire in early modern poetry / Farah Karim-Cooper; 3. Facing marital cruelty in Shakespeare's The taming of the shrew and early modern London / Loreen L. Giese -- Part II. Signifying faces. 4. The two faces of Othello / Sean Lawrence; 5. Facing King Lear / David B. Goldstein; 6. Frontmatter -- Contents -- Acknowledgements -- Preface -- Resilience Research: The Need for a Narrative Turn -- Life Sciences and Narratives of Resilience -- Narrative Enquiry on the Theme of Resilience in Fiction -- A Memoir-Based Reading of Human Resilience -- Resilience in Times of Economic Boom and Bust -- Concluding Remarks Be resilient! Today, we hear this line in almost any context. The term resilience is among the most repeated buzzwords. But why, simply, do we need to be resilient? Hamideh Mahdiani presents answers to this question by challenging a reductionistic understanding of resilience from single disciplinary perspectives; by questioning the dominance of life sciences in defining an age-old concept; and by problematizing the neglected role of life writing in fostering resilience. In so doing, through a multidisciplinary frame of reference, the book works with various examples from life writing and life sciences, and testifies to the focal role of narrative studies in resilience research

Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human is an analysis of the central work of the Western canon, and of the playwright who not only invented the English language, but also, as Bloom argues, created human nature as we know it today. Before Shakespeare there was characterization; after Shakespeare, there were characters, men and women capable of change, with highly individual personalities. Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human is a companion to Shakespeare's work, and just as much an inquiry into what it means to be human. It explains why Shakespeare has remained our most popular and universal dramatist for more than four centuries, and in helping us to better understand ourselves through Shakespeare, it restores the role of the literary critic to one of central importance in our culture.
