This book deals with a timely topic of enduring importance. Due to the recent terrorist attacks, academics, the lay public, the media, even the U.S. president, have revived the use of the word evil, which now appears with a noticeably increased frequency in much of the daily news and commentary. Professionals particularly in the fields of psychology, sociology, and philosophy are being asked for answers to the questions, Why is there human evil? What are its causes? How are we to understand individuals who wish to inflict human suffering and destruction on as wide a scale as possible? An intense interest in the phenomenon of human evil has developed. It is expressed in the widespread concern to understand human psychology and patterns of thought that underlie human evil in all of its forms-ranging from the aggression, brutality, and destructiveness of war, genocide, and terrorism, to individual expressions of human evil in prejudice, racism, and hate crimes. This book is the first of its kind. It is a comprehensive and solid study of the multi-causal nature of a phenomenon that has been treated almost exclusively in terms of religion, myth, symbolism, moral philosophy, and ethics. The reader will find that it makes clear, specific, non-speculative, and definite answers to the questions often now raised concerning human evil.

Traditionally, pathology residents have learned how to write autopsy reports by trial-and-error, with oral feedback from local mentors. Now, pathologists and pathologists in training throughout the English-speaking world have access to a manual that describes what should be in an autopsy report, how to organize the material, and what the purposes are. The book lists numerous bad habits to avoid, and offers examples of effective report construction. It covers not only how to describe diseases and injuries, but also how to formulate and write opinions. As a supplement, the book also contains recommendations on record retention schedules for medical examiners (not everything needs to be saved in perpetuity), and how to formulate opinions for death certificates. The book is aimed at pathologists in training, but will also be of benefit to seasoned pathologists who want to improve their reports.

Galen (Claudius Galenus, 129–c. 199 CE) is the most famous physician of the Greco-Roman world whose writings have survived. A Greek from a wealthy family, raised and educated in the Greek city of Pergamon, he acquired his medical education by travelling widely in the Roman world, visiting the famous medical centres and studying with leading doctors. His career took him to Rome, where he was appointed by the emperor Marcus Aurelius as his personal physician; he also served succeeding emperors in this role. A huge corpus of writings on medicine which bear Galen's name has survived. The task of editing and publishing such a corpus, and of identifying the authentic Galenic texts within it, is a hugely challenging one, and the 22-volume edition reissued here, edited by Karl Gottlob Kühn (1754–1840) and published in Leipzig between 1821 and 1833, has never yet been equalled
