It has long been a scholarly commonplace that Milton's scientific knowledge was outmoded, based on medieval, teleological sources. Harinder Singh Marjara's purpose in this study is to show that in writing Paradise Lost Milton was working very much within the mainstream of contemporary seventeenth-century scientific thinking; that his universe is both coherent and distinctively his own, dependent on his poetic needs, integrated with the themes and structures of his epic poem. Together the three parts of Marjara's study--the Ways of Science, the Physical Universe in Paradise Lost, and Milton's Philosophy of Nature--treat a broad band of questions at issue in the writings of a large spectrum of thinkers about science. Milton had a host of competing ideas to draw on and to choose from in fashioning the poetic universe of Paradise Lost. His freedom, in the absence of stable paradigms, to make informed and intellectually responsible choices about the scientific material he incorporated into the poem is made abundantly clear in this study. This is a book that challenges and will modify the conventional wisdom on Milton's awareness of the scientific matters that engaged his contemporaries.

Tanner draws on the philosophic character of Milton's poetry and the poetic nature of Kierkegaard's philosophy, particularly his theory of anxiety, to enrich and enliven a bold new reading of Milton's Paradise Lost. Proposing that Milton and Kierkegaard were remarkably similar in temperament, life-experience, and ideological commitment, Tanner argues that for both Christian writers the path to sin and to salvation lies through anxiety--that both the poet and the philosopher include anxiety, along with pain, suffering, and paradox, within the compass of paradise. Both Milton's Paradise Lost and Kierkegaard's The Concept of Anxiety explore the psychology of innocence, sin, and guilt, probing the nature of human fallibility and freedom. The first half of the work explores anxiety in Eden before the Fall. This section provides fresh perspectives on such issues as free will, the problem of a fall before the Fall, original sin, the etiology of evil, and prelapsarian knowledge. The second half examines anxiety after the Fall, offering original insights into such issues as the demonic personality, remorse, despair, and faith. Taken as a whole, Tanner's study provides a philosophically coherent new reading of Paradise Lost. Further, though intended primarily as a work of literary criticism, the book touches on matters of broad philosophical, theological, and simply human interest--such as the nature of freedom, knowledge, sin, the self, and salvation. Anxiety in Eden will be of keen interest to literary scholars, philosophers, and theologians.

Although Milton's three major poems, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, appeared well into the Restoration era, they have long been regarded as belonging philosophically to the earlier seventeenth century. The canonical view is of Milton as a relic in the Restoration - either belated humanist or belated Puritan. Addressing this long-standing anomaly of literary history, Historicizing Milton shows how Milton's major poems respond specifically and powerfully to royalist spectacles of the 1660s and 1670s, spectacles that were intended as displays of divinely approved monarchical power. Laura Lunger Knoppers traces such public spectacles as the execution of the regicides, the exhumation of Cromwell, the punishment of fifth monarchists, and the coronation triumph of Charles II. Drawing on a range of sources, including letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, sermons, royal proclamations, and parliamentary accounts, Knoppers reconstructs the discourses that interpreted and contested spectacles of power and punishment. Milton's poems are part of this oppositional discourse, Knoppers argues, and his revisions of such key terms as martyrdom, treason, joy, glory, and conquest boldly and defiantly challenge the spectacles by which the monarchy constituted and conveyed its power. Questioning the nature of earthly spectacle altogether, Milton rewrites display as inner witness before God alone. His radically iconoclastic art creates a mode of antispectacle, not only exposing but also redefining and appropriating the spectacles of state.

In the opinion of J. Martin Evans, Paradise Lost is at heart a poem about empire. Written during the crucial first phase of English empire-building in the New World, Milton's epic registers the radically divided attitudes toward the settlement of America that existed in seventeenth-century Protestant England. Evans looks at the relationship between Paradise Lost and the pervasive colonial discourse of Milton's time. Evans bases his analysis on the literature of exploration and colonialism. The primary sources on which he draws range from sermons about the New World justifying colonization and exhorting virtue among colonists to promotional pamphlets designed to lure people and investment into the colonies. Evans's research allows him to create a richly textured picture of anxiety and optimism, guilt and moral certitude. The central question is whether Milton supported England's colonization or covertly attempted to subvert it. In contrast to those who attribute to Paradise Lost a specific political agenda for the American colonies, Evans maintains that Milton reflects the complexity and ambivalence of attitudes held by English society. Analyzing Paradise Lost against this background, Evans offers a new perspective on such fundamental issues as the narrator's shifting stance in the poem, the unique character of Milton's prelapsarian paradise, and the moral and intellectual status of Adam and Eve before and after the Fall. From Satan's arrival in Hell to the expulsion from the garden of Eden, Milton's version of the Genesis myth resonates with the complex thematics of Renaissance colonialism.
