    This book draws together for the very first time examples of the 'aesthetic pacifism' practised during the Great War by such celebrated individuals as Virginia Woolf, Siegfried Sassoon and Bertrand Russell. In addition, the book outlines the stories of those less well-known who shared the mind-set of the Bloomsbury Group when it came to facing the first 'total war'. The research for this study took five years, gathering evidence from all the major archives in Great Britain and abroad. This is the first time that such wide-ranging evidence has been placed together in order to paint a complete picture of this fascinating form of anti-war expression. Beginning with an introduction to the period and issues involved, the narrative commences with Bertrand Russell and Cambridge before moving on to cover the disparate responses of Bloomsbury, the reactions of other celebrated writers and artists before covering the more obscure participants. A themed conclusion draws the material to a close. With the Great War and the Bloomsbury Group continuing to exert a strong grip on the popular imagination, this detailed book is written with the general reader very much in mind, as well as the specialist.

    Kurt Tucholsky war zu Lebzeiten einer der gefürchtetsten Militärkritiker und engagiertesten Kämpfer für den Frieden. Noch heute schreiben sich Kriegsgegner sein Diktum »Soldaten sind Mörder« auf die Transparente. Seine Positionen sind und bleiben eine Mahnung für den Einsatz um Frieden und Völkerverständigung. Die Autoren analysieren in dem Sammelband, wie sich Tucholsky während und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zum radikalen Pazifisten entwickelte und wie er in der Weimarer Republik versuchte, seine Überzeugungen durch Aktionen und Texte zu vermitteln. Da Tucholsky ab 1924 in Frankreich lebte, wird aufgezeigt, wie er sich zum dortigen literarischen Pazifismus verhielt. Ergänzt werden die Beiträge zu Tucholsky durch Aufsätze, die den Militarismus in der Weimarer Republik sowie die Entwicklung des Romanautors Erich Maria Remarque zu einem »militanten Pazifisten« untersuchen. Über die Aktualität von Tucholskys Positionen diskutieren abschließend Vertreter von Politik, Friedensorganisation und Bundeswehr.

    How does Shakespeare represent war? This volume reviews scholarship to date on the question and introduces new perspectives, looking at contemporary conflict through the lens of the past. Through his haunting depiction of historical bloodshed, including the Trojan War, the fall of the Roman Republic, and the Wars of the Roses, Shakespeare illuminates more recent political violence, ranging from the British occupation of Ireland to the Spanish Civil War, the Balkans War, and the past several decades of U. S. military engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Can a war be just? What is the relation between the ruler and the ruled? What motivates ethnic violence? Shakespeare's plays serve as the frame for careful explorations of perennial problems of human co-existence: the politics of honor, the ethics of diplomacy, the responsibility of non-combatants, and the tension between idealism and Realpolitik

    Kurt Tucholsky war zu Lebzeiten einer der gefürchtetsten Militärkritiker und engagiertesten Kämpfer für den Frieden. Noch heute schreiben sich Kriegsgegner sein Diktum “Soldaten sind Mörder” auf die Transparente. Seine Positionen sind und bleiben eine Mahnung für den Einsatz um Frieden und Völkerverständigung. Die Autoren analysieren in dem Sammelband, wie sich Tucholsky während und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zum radikalen Pazifisten entwickelte und wie er in der Weimarer Republik versuchte, seine Überzeugungen durch Aktionen und Texte zu vermitteln. Da Tucholsky ab 1924 in Frankreich lebte, wird aufgezeigt, wie er sich zum dortigen literarischen Pazifismus verhielt.
