Serialization is an old narrative strategy and a form of publication that can be traced far back in literary history, yet serial narratives are as popular as ever. This book investigates a resurgence of serial narratives in contemporary literary culture. Analyzing series as diverse as Mark Z. Danielewski⁰́₉s experimental book series The Familiar; audiobook series by the Swedish streaming service Storytel; children⁰́₉s books by Lemony Snicket and Philip Pullman and their adaptations into screen; and serial writing and reading on the writing site Wattpad, the book traces how contemporary series at once are shaped by literary tradition and develop the format according to the logics of new media and digital technologies. The book sheds light on the interplay between the selected serials' narrative content and medial, social, and economic contexts, drawing on insights from literary studies, literary sociology, media studies, and cultural studies. Serialization in Literature Across Media and Markets thus contributes a unique and interdisciplinary perspective on a historical phenomenon that has proved ever more successful in contemporary media culture. It is a book for researchers and students of literature and media and for anyone who likes a good series and wants to understand why

"Cooke's pioneering book discusses changes in televisual style in British television drama from the 1950s to the early 21st century. Taking dinner table scenes as a recurring motif, each chapter analyses the construction of the scene in terms of camerawork, editing, dialogue and performance, exploring how decisions made by the director and members of the production team contribute to the narrative meaning of the scene. The scenes analysed come from single plays, series and serials, including Nineteen Eighty-Four, Coronation Street, Middlemarch, This Life and Teachers. Accompanied by frame grabs to illustrate the analysis, each drama is discussed in relation to changes in production practices, technology, aesthetic preferences, and social and institutional change. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book is pertinent for anyone interested in how British television drama has changed, stylistically, from the live era of the 1950s to the fast-paced, high-tech dramas of the 2000s"..

"Through analysis of the complex discourse surrounding trauma and loss, this book provides a necessary examination of temporality and ethics in Israeli film and television since the turn of the millennium. The author examines posttraumatic idioms of fragmentation and incoherence, highlighting the rising resistance towards generic categories, and the turn to unconventional and paradoxical structures with unique aesthetics. Maintaining that contemporary Israeli cinema has undergone an ethical shift, the author examines the revealing traumas and denied identities that also seek alternative ways to confront ethical question of accountability. It discusses the relationships between trauma, nationalism, and cinema through the intertwined perspectives of feminism, queer theory, and critical race and postcolonial studies, showing how national traumas are constructed by notions of gendered, sexual, and racial identity. This innovative text highlights the complexities of discourse surrounding trauma and loss, informed by multiple categories of difference. Across each chapter various elements of Israeli film are explored, spanning from strategies used to critically examine victim-perpetrator dynamics, co-existence in temporal space, women's cinema in Israel, displacement, and queer communities and identity. Beyond its direct contribution to cinema studies and Israel studies, the book will be of interest to trauma and memory studies, postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality studies, Jewish studies, Middle Eastern studies, and cultural studies"--...

"This volume explores illusionism as a much larger phenomenon than optical illusion, magic shows, or special effects, as a vital part of how we perceive, process, and shape the world we live in. Considering different cultural practices characterised by illusionism, this book suggests a new approach to illusion via media theory. Each of the chapters analyses a specific kind of illusionistic practice and the concept of illusionism it entails in a given context, including philosophy, perception and cognitive theory, performance magic, occultism, optics, physiology, early cinema, cartomancy, spiritualism, architecture, shamanic rituals, and theoretical physics, to show the diversity of shapes that illusionism and illusions can take. The book provides detailed analyses of illusions within performance and ritual magic, philosophy, art history and psychology as well as a first approach to the study of illusions outside of these established fields. It aims to find ways of identifying and analysing a wider range of illusions in the humanities. This multidisciplinary and comprehensive volume will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in media and culture, theatre and performance, philosophy, sociology, politics and religion"--

How have sociopolitical fears been enacted, represented and performed in societies marked by repression, conflict and abuse of power? And how has this emotion shaped aesthetic and ideological discourses and cultural productions? Violencia, poder y afectos: narrativas del miedo en Latinoamérica offers a critical contribution to studies of the representation of socio-politically inflicted fears in contemporary literature and film. This volume looks at the immediate and long-lasting consequences of violence and terror in Latin American societies from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Chapters of the book engage with two central questions: How have sociopolitical fears been enacted, represented and performed in societies marked by repression, conflict and abuse of power? And how has this emotion shaped aesthetic and ideological discourses and cultural productions? Looking at contemporary writers and cultural producers including Mónica Ojeda, Cristina Rivera Garza, Rodrigo Rey Rosa, Alonso Cueto and Manlio Argueta, the contributors of this volume examine the climate of terror and anxiety resulting from the civil wars in Guatemala, El Salvador and Peru; the war on drugs in Mexico; the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama; and dynamics of class and gender power imbalances in Ecuador and Mexico

"This book is the first to deal with documentary aesthetic practices of the post-war period in Eastern Europe in a comparative perspective. The contributions examine the specific forms and modes of documentary representations and the role they played in the formation of new aesthetic trends during the cultural-political transition of the long 1960s. This documentary first-hand approach to the world aimed to break up unquestioned ideological structures and expose tabooed truths in order to engender much-needed social changes. New ways of depicting daily life, writing testimony or subjective reportage emerged that still shape cultural debates today."-- This book, for the first time, investigates documentary aesthetics as a formative trend in post-war Eastern Europe. Its contributions reconstruct major artistic practices and their theoretical reflections within the broader cultural-political horizon of the turbulent 1960s
