    Il rythmus caudatus continens è una tipologia metrica attestata nel Medioevo dalle Artes rythmicae latine e diffusa nelle letterature francese, provenzale, italiana e catalana, in un periodo che va dal XII al XV secolo e oltre. Pur senza costituire un genere letterario, i testi scritti in rythmus caudatus continens presentano, nelle diverse letterature, importanti somiglianze tematiche. Questo libro offre una sintesi della circolazione del metro partendo dallo studio dei testi composti nell’area galloromanza, che intreccia analisi metrico-stilistica, contenutistica e filologica. Vengono così descritte le costanti e i punti di snodo della tradizione, e presentate delle ipotesi sul modo in cui il rythmus caudatus continens è stato trasmesso alle letterature italiana e catalana, costituendosi in tal modo come un elemento importante della coesione del sistema letterario europeo del Medioevo.

    Le chansonnier français de Berne (cote 389, sigle C) date du dernier quart du 13ième siècle. Souvent considéré trop marginal pour servir de manuscrit de base d'une édition critique, dans cette publication il fait l'objet d'une analyse approfondie suivie d'une nouvelle édition de 53 poésies uniques et anonymes. Dans la première partie de son étude, l'éditeur présente un bref aperçu historique ainsi qu'une description détaillée des aspects physiques du manuscrit. Suit alors une analyse du contenu et de l'organisation du chansonnier. Lors de l'identification de poésies individuelles, l'éditeur se sert des bibliographies de Raynaud-Spanke, mais également de celle de Linker, trop souvent négligée bien que organisée plus logiquement. Après une présentation détaillée des traits dialectaux du manuscrit, l'ouvrage offre une transcription diplomatique et une édition critique commentée de 53 unica anonymes. Pour chaque poésie il y a des repères bibliographiques, une analyse métrique, et un bref commentaire philologique. Les appendices constituent des outils qui placent le manuscrit dans le contexte de la poésie médiévale: il s'agit e.a. d'une présentation synoptique des chansons, et de plusieurs concordances avec p. e. les répertoires métriques de Mölk/Wolfzettel et de Frank

This volume collects the papers presented at the 17th symposium of the German Medievalist Society. The symposium was devoted to the topic of “the secret” as a constitutive social and cultural concept in the Middle Ages. The appearance, functions, and impact of secrets and their demarcation from the public domain are examined in essays from the fields of history, philosophy, theology, and literary and cultural studies.

    We present ALMA, a new research project aimed at investigating the interaction between language and knowledge practices from AD 1100 to 1500. Our primary question is how Medieval Italian, French, Occitan, Catalan, and Spanish developed into languages of knowledge and scholarship (German Wissen(schafts)sprachen ) in permanent opposition to and exchange with the predominant Latin (but also with Arab, Greek, and Hebrew). Focusing on two domains, medicine and law, the project combines linguistics, text philology, and the history of science with the Digital Humanities and ontology engineering. ALMA will create two multi-lingual, domain-specific text corpora by integrating text editions of hitherto unedited manuscripts and incunabula, and digitized printed editions. Our corpus-linguistic exploration of the ALMA corpora will provide the basis for lexical-semantic studies that analyze emerging knowledge networks and the depth of their linguistic representations. We hypothesize that language evolution and the development of more complex linguistic structures will allow for measuring the impact of knowledge practices on medieval vernacular languages. We will trace the dissemination of lexical material across languages, language varieties, cultural spaces, and periods. This will enable us to follow specific vernacular communication channels. We will use cutting-edge technologies to compile, publish, and share our findings, and to model them in the form of historicized ontologies and Linked Data. Our onomasiological, ontology-driven approach will result in the creation of domain models that can be re-used within the Semantic Web. This has great potential to be relevant for researchers from different disciplines.

    Cligès was probably written after Erec et Enide and is thus Chrétien de Troyes' second romance. There are several modern English and French translations of the text, but a need has long been felt for a modern German version, particularly as references in Middle High German texts and text fragments indicate that there was at least one Middle High German version. This gap is now filled with the present modern German translation which is published together with the original text in a bilingual edition; this means that the special position which Cligès takes up in more than one respect in the history of the medieval European romance can now form a stronger focus in German Studies. Thus a broader basis is formed both for interdisciplinary medieval studies and for research into the history and theory of the romance. A comprehensive introduction sketches the most important problems in interpreting the work, the present state of research into Cligès in international Romance Studies and its place in the history of the Arthurian romance. With the translation, the introduction, the commentary, and a comprehensive bibliography, this monograph provides an indispensable foundation for future research. It is anticipated that it will meet with wide interest and significantly alter the view taken by German Studies of the history of the romance in medieval Europe Der Cligès ist vermutlich nach Erec et Enide entstanden und somit der zweite Roman von Chrétien de Troyes. Es existieren mehrere moderne Übersetzungen des Romans in englischer und französischer Sprache, aber eine neuhochdeutsche Übersetzung ist seit langem ein Desiderat. Dies gilt umso mehr, als Erwähnungen in mittelhochdeutschen Dichtungen und fragmentarische Zeugnisse darauf hindeuten, dass es (mindestens) eine mittelhochdeutsche Bearbeitung gegeben hat. Mit der nun vorliegenden ersten neuhochdeutschen Übersetzung, die mit dem altfranzösischen Text zusammen in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe erscheint, wird diese Lücke geschlossen, so dass die Sonderstellung, die der Cligès in mehr als einer Hinsicht in der Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter einnimmt, auch von germanistischer Seite stärker in den Blick genommen werden kann. Damit wird die Basis sowohl für eine interdisziplinär arbeitende Mediävistik als auch für Forschungen zur Geschichte und Theorie des Romans erweitert. In einer umfassenden Einführung werden zudem die wichtigsten Interpretationsprobleme, der aktuelle Forschungstand zum Cligès in der internationalen Romanistik und seine Stellung in der Geschichte des Artusromans skizziert. Mit der Übersetzung, der Einleitung, dem Kommentar und einer umfassenden Bibliographie bietet die Monographie eine unverzichtbare Grundlage für weitere Forschungen. Es ist zu erwarten, dass sie auf breites Interesse stoßen und das germanistische Bild über die Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter nachhaltig verändern wird

    The Earthly Paradise was a vibrant symbol at the heart of medieval Christian geographies of the cosmos. As humanity’s primal home now lost through the sins of Adam of Eve, the Earthly Paradise figured prominently in Old French tales of lands beyond the mundane world. This study proposes a fresh look at the complex roles played by the Earthly Paradise in three medieval French poems: Marie de France’s The Purgatory of St. Patrick, Benedeit’s Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot, and Guillaume de Lorris’s The Romance of the Rose. By examining the literary, cultural, and artistic components that informed each poem, this book advances the thesis that the exterior walls of the Earthly Paradise served evolving purposes as contemplative objects that implicitly engaged complex notions of economic solidarity and idealized community. These visions of the Earthly Paradise stand to provide a striking contribution to a historically informed response to the contemporary legacies of colonialism and the international refugee crisis. Jacob Abell is a medievalist at Baylor University where his work focuses on ecocriticism, religious studies, and the digital humanities. His most recent publication focuses on the poetics of trauma in Dante and the Caribbean poet Aimé Césaire

Souvent considéré trop marginal pour servir de manuscrit de base d'une édition critique, dans cette publication il fait l'objet d'une analyse approfondie suivie d'une nouvelle édition de 53 poésies uniques et anonymes. Dans la première partie de son étude, l'éditeur présente un bref aperçu historique ainsi qu'une description détaillée des aspects physiques du manuscrit. Suit alors une analyse du contenu et de l'organisation du chansonnier. Lors de l'identification de poésies individuelles, l'éditeur se sert des bibliographies de Raynaud-Spanke, mais également de celle de Linker, trop souvent négligée bien que organisée plus logiquement. Après une présentation détaillée des traits dialectaux du manuscrit, l'ouvrage offre une transcription diplomatique et une édition critique commentée de 53 unica anonymes. Pour chaque poésie il y a des repères bibliographiques, une analyse métrique, et un bref commentaire philologique. Les appendices constituent des outils qui placent le manuscrit dans le contexte de la poésie médiévale: il s'agit e.a. d'une présentation synoptique des chansons, et de plusieurs concordances avec p. e. les répertoires métriques de Mölk/Wolfzettel et de Frank

    Cligès was probably written after Erec et Enide and is thus Chrétien de Troyes' second romance. There are several modern English and French translations of the text, but a need has long been felt for a modern German version, particularly as references in Middle High German texts and text fragments indicate that there was at least one Middle High German version. This gap is now filled with the present modern German translation which is published together with the original text in a bilingual edition; this means that the special position which Cligès takes up in more than one respect in the history of the medieval European romance can now form a stronger focus in German Studies. Thus a broader basis is formed both for interdisciplinary medieval studies and for research into the history and theory of the romance. A comprehensive introduction sketches the most important problems in interpreting the work, the present state of research into Cligès in international Romance Studies and its place in the history of the Arthurian romance. With the translation, the introduction, the commentary, and a comprehensive bibliography, this monograph provides an indispensable foundation for future research. It is anticipated that it will meet with wide interest and significantly alter the view taken by German Studies of the history of the romance in medieval Europe Der Cligès ist vermutlich nach Erec et Enide entstanden und somit der zweite Roman von Chrétien de Troyes. Es existieren mehrere moderne Übersetzungen des Romans in englischer und französischer Sprache, aber eine neuhochdeutsche Übersetzung ist seit langem ein Desiderat. Dies gilt umso mehr, als Erwähnungen in mittelhochdeutschen Dichtungen und fragmentarische Zeugnisse darauf hindeuten, dass es (mindestens) eine mittelhochdeutsche Bearbeitung gegeben hat. Mit der nun vorliegenden ersten neuhochdeutschen Übersetzung, die mit dem altfranzösischen Text zusammen in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe erscheint, wird diese Lücke geschlossen, so dass die Sonderstellung, die der Cligès in mehr als einer Hinsicht in der Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter einnimmt, auch von germanistischer Seite stärker in den Blick genommen werden kann. Damit wird die Basis sowohl für eine interdisziplinär arbeitende Mediävistik als auch für Forschungen zur Geschichte und Theorie des Romans erweitert. In einer umfassenden Einführung werden zudem die wichtigsten Interpretationsprobleme, der aktuelle Forschungstand zum Cligès in der internationalen Romanistik und seine Stellung in der Geschichte des Artusromans skizziert. Mit der Übersetzung, der Einleitung, dem Kommentar und einer umfassenden Bibliographie bietet die Monographie eine unverzichtbare Grundlage für weitere Forschungen. Es ist zu erwarten, dass sie auf breites Interesse stoßen und das germanistische Bild über die Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter nachhaltig verändern wird

    Abstract: We present ALMA, a new research project aimed at investigating the interaction between language and knowledge practices from AD 1100 to 1500. Our primary question is how Medieval Italian, French, Occitan, Catalan, and Spanish developed into languages of knowledge and scholarship (German Wissen (schafts) sprachen) in permanent opposition to and exchange with the predominant Latin (but also with Arab, Greek, and Hebrew). Focusing on two domains, medicine and law, the project combines linguistics, text philology, and the history of science with the Digital Humanities and ontology engineering. ALMA will create two multi-lingual, domain-specific text corpora by integrating text editions of hitherto unedited manuscripts and incunabula, and digitized printed editions. Our corpus-linguistic exploration of the ALMA corpora will provide the basis for lexical-semantic studies that analyze emerging knowledge networks and the depth of their linguistic representations. We hypothesize that language evolution and the development of more complex linguistic structures will allow for measuring the impact of knowledge practices on medieval vernacular languages. We will trace the dissemination of lexical material across languages, language varieties, cultural spaces, and periods. This will enable us to follow specific vernacular communication channels. We will use cutting-edge technologies to compile, publish, and share our findings, and to model them in the form of historicized ontologies and Linked Data. Our onomasiological, ontology-driven approach will result in the creation of domain models that can be re-used within the Semantic Web. This has great potential to be relevant for researchers from different disciplines.
