    Die Auffassung, dass die Erde durch menschliche Aktivität in eine neue geologische Epoche eingetreten ist – das Anthropozän – ist in Forschung und Öffentlichkeit zunehmend akzeptiert. Dieser Artikel untersucht, mit welchen ästhetischen Mitteln literarische Texte vor dem Hintergrund dieses Übergangs zu einem Neudenken der Beziehung zwischen nicht-menschlicher Natur und menschlicher Kultur, menschlich-biologischer und geologischer Zeit, dem Individuum und der menschlichen Art, sowie zwischen rationalem Denken und biologischer Natur beitragen. Ein close reading von vier norwegischen Romanen zeigt, wie diese innovative Erzähltechniken nutzen, um ein Niveau von Textkomplexität zu erzeugen, das ein tieferes Verständnis von Schlüsselproblemen des Anthropozäns ermöglichen kann. Dieses Komplexitätsniveau erfordert aber zugleich eine erhebliche Beteiligung des Lesers und verhindert damit eventuell eine Rezeption solcher Texte durch breitere Zielgruppen. The notion that through human activity, the earth has entered a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, is increasingly recognized in science and the public sphere. This article asks by what aesthetic means literary fiction, against the backdrop of this transition, contributes to a rethinking of the relations between non-human nature and human culture, human biological and geological time, the human individual and the human species, and rational thought and human biological nature. A close reading of four Norwegian novels reveals how they deploy innovative narrative techniques to create a level of textual complexity that can contribute to a deeper understanding of key issues of the Anthropocene, but that also demands considerable reader involvement and thus potentially precludes larger audiences for such texts.

    The novels of the Norwegian Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun can be seen as an ongoing discussion with modernity. In some parts his critique is reactionary, in other parts worth listening to. This article deals with his Segelfoss novels, Hamsun’s satirical representation of the commodity trade within the emerging capitalist market and the role of the consumer. The novels may be read as early and thought-provoking contributions to the large amount of literature on consumers and their nature. Is growth always good? What has been lost? Die Romane des norwegischen Nobelpreisträgers Knut Hamsun können als eine ständige Auseinandersetzung mit der Moderne betrachtet werden. In einigen Teilen ist seine Kritik reaktionär, in anderen Teilen hörenswert. In diesem Artikel geht es um seine Segelfoss -Romane, Hamsuns satirische Darstellung des Warenhandels im aufkommenden kapitalistischen Markt und der Rolle des Verbrauchers. Die Romane können als frühe und zum Nachdenken anregende Beiträge zu der großen Menge an Literatur über Verbraucher und ihr Wesen gelesen werden. Ist Wachstum immer gut? Was ist verloren gegangen?
