    This interdisciplinary book contains 22 essays and interventions on rest and restlessness, silence and noise, relaxation and work. It draws together approaches from artists, literary scholars, psychologists, activists, historians, geographers and sociologists who challenge assumptions about how rest operates across mind, bodies, and practices. Rest’s presence or absence affects everyone. Nevertheless, defining rest is problematic: both its meaning and what it feels like are affected by many socio-political, economic and cultural factors. The authors open up unexplored corners and experimental pathways into this complex topic, with contributions ranging from investigations of daydreaming and mindwandering, through histories of therapeutic relaxation and laziness, and creative-critical pieces on lullabies and the Sabbath, to experimental methods to measure aircraft noise and track somatic vigilance in urban space. The essays are grouped by scale of enquiry, into mind, body and practice, allowing readers to draw new connections across apparently distinct phenomena.     Between late antiquity and the fifteenth century, theologians, philosophers, and poets struggled to articulate the correct relationship between sound and sense, creating taxonomies of sounds based on their capacity to carry meaning. In World of Echo, Adin E. Lears traces how medieval thinkers adopted the concept of noise as a mode of lay understanding grounded in the body and the senses.With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, Lears examines a range of literary genres to highlight the poetic and social effects of this vibrant discourse, offering close readings of works by Chaucer and Langland, as well as the mystics Richard Rolle and Margery Kempe. Each of these writers embraced an embodied experience of language resistant to clear articulation, even as their work reflects inherited anxieties about the appeal of such sensations. A preoccupation with the sound of language emerged in the form of poetic soundplay at the same time that mysticism and other forms of lay piety began to flower in England. As Lears shows, the presence of such emphatic aural texture amplified the cognitive importance of feeling in conjunction with reason and was a means for the laity—including lay women—to cultivate embodied forms of knowledge on their own terms, in precarious relation to existing clerical models of instruction. World of Echo offers a deep history of the cultural and social hierarchies that coalesce around the aesthetic experiences that accentuate ways of knowing outside proscribed models

    Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Kai Ginkel ergründet diese, indem er Soziologie, Ethnografie und Sound Studies miteinander in Dialog bringt.     Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Doch das konzentrierte interdisziplinäre 'Hin-Hören' auf solche negierten Laute, also Un-Laute, lässt bisher unerkannte Strukturen zutage treten, deren Analysepotenzial für die Kulturwissenschaften derzeit kaum zu überschätzen ist. Die Beiträge des Bandes konzentrieren sich besonders auf das 20. Jahrhundert, seit die technischen Möglichkeiten der Schallaufzeichnung spezifische Dispositive hervorgebracht haben

    What can the sounds of today tell us about the future? Can an analysis of sound and sonic practices allow us to make reliable predictions in relation to wider social phenomena? And what might they tell us about technology in a world where futurology is such a frenzied and busy field? In order to answer these questions, this book tests a range of propositions that connect noise, sound and music to political, economic and technological events. Hence it is a book about historical trajectories and conflicting ideas about time and the necessity to re-contextualize and interpret them in the digital age. - Stephen Kennedy is Principal Lecturer in Media & Communication and Media Arts at University of Greenwich, UK.
