Transparency and Dissimulation analyses the configurations of ancient neoplatonism in early modern English texts. In looking closely at poems and prose writings by authors as diverse as Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Edward Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Traherne, Thomas Browne and, last not least, Aphra Behn, this study attempts to map the outlines of a neoplatonic aesthetics in literary practice as well as to chart its transformative potential in the shifting contexts of cultural turbulency and denominational conflict in 16th- and 17th-century England. As part of a "new", contextually aware, aesthetics, it seeks to determine some of the functions neoplatonic structures - such as forms of recursivity or certain modes of apophatic speech - are capable of fulfilling in combination and interaction with other, heterogeneous or even ideologically incompatible elements. What emerges is a surprisingly versatile poetics of excess and enigma, with strong Plotinian and Erigenist accents. This appears to need the traditional ingredients of petrarchism or courtliness only as material for the formation of new and dynamic wholes, revealing its radical metaphysical potential above all in the way it helps to resist the easy answers - in religion, science, or the fashions of libertine love

Neoplatonism, the dominant philosophy of Late Antiquity, inspired not only the intellectual traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam but also their arts. Neoplatonic notions of the ascent of the soul, the nature of love and beauty, divine immanence and transcendence, and the interplay between the many and the One, have for centuries left comparable marks on the poetry of Western Asia, North Africa and Europe. This volume focuses on the Greater Mediterranean and discusses authors who wrote in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Persian, Spanish and Turkish, from medieval times to the present day. Among them are many celebrated exponents of their respective classical traditions, including Dante, Ibn Arabi and Ibn Gabirol.

Controversies and coincidences -- The young man and the mistress -- The Sonnets and the plays -- The Sonnets and Antony and Cleopatra -- A Lover's Complaint -- The Muse -- Varied perceptions of philosophies of opposites -- Epilogue: Dante and Shakespeare

"Dr Ronald Gray, Fellow of Emmanuel College, lectured at Cambridge on German Literature and Philosophy for 33 years, and now expands his article, 'Will in the Universe, Shakespeare's Sonnets, Plato's Symposium, Alchemy and Renaissance Neo-Platonism', published in 'Shakespeare Survey 59', Cambridge University Press 2006. This developed from his 'Goethe the Alchemist, A Study of Alchemical Symbolism in Goethe's Literary and Scientific Works', 1952, greeted on published as 'a major contribution to Goethe Studies'. Diotima's vision of universal love in The Symposium is echoed not only in Castiglione's "The Courtier" but in alchemy, in its symbolical sense; these together with Christian ideas combined in Shakespeare's imagination, strongly influencing the Sonnets. Where possible, Shakespeare inserted themes of the Sonnets in the plays. The result is a paradoxical combination of mysticism, sometimes erotic, in the Sonnets, with real situations and real lovers in both Sonnets and plays. The supreme realisation of the Dark Lady is Cleopatra, but the Lady also has mythic dimensions."--Publisher's description

"This book is a detailed study of Ezra Pound's explicit and implicit use of elements of the Neoplatonic tradition in his prose and poetry, and of the way it informed his poetics as well as his political and social-economic views. This book not only discusses the ideas of those Pound considered to be leading figures in the development of Neoplatonism (such as Plotinus, Dionysus the Areopagite, Eriugena, Dante, Gemisthus Plethon, and Thomas Taylor), but, more importantly, it shows how and why Pound adapted and appropriated their notions to develop his interpretation of what he saw as an ongoing Neoplatonic tradition. Through this adaptation of Neoplatonism, Pound's work may be seen as a commentary upon this religio-philosophical tradition as well as a contribution to it." "This study incorporates new material never published before, such as typescript drafts of cantos, notes on Neoplatonic concepts, and Pound's glosses in his notebooks made while he was reading Plotinus's Enneads in the original Greek." "Moreover, this study on Pound and Neoplatonism ties in with the present interest in two aspects of Modernist writing, namely, the link between Modernism and the occult, and the reaction of Modernism to what one may call the epistemological crisis."--BOOK JACKET.
