To justify the plundering of today's Democratic Republic of the Congo, U.S. intellectual elites have continuously produced dismissive Congo discourses. Tracing these discourses in great depth and breadth for the first time, Johnny Van Hove shows how U.S. intellectuals (and their influential European counterparts) have been using the Congo in similar fashions for their own goals. Analyzing intellectuals as diverse as W.E.B. Du Bois, Joseph Conrad, and David Van Reybrouck, the book offers a theorization of Central West Africa, a case study of normalized narratives on the "Other", and a stirring wake up call for all contemporary writers on international history and politics.

Afghanische basisdemokratische und feministische Akteure äußern deutlich ihren Widerspruch zum externen Peacebuilding - doch sie werden nicht gehört. Ihre Analysen und Ideen werden von Politik und Wissenschaft weitgehend ausgeschlossen.Darin schlägt sich, so kann Mechthild Exo zeigen, die koloniale, epistemische Gewalt in der Weltpolitik nieder. Anschaulich und lebendig stellt sie das »unerwünschte Wissen« von vier afghanischen Organisationen vor, die in der künstlerischen Menschenrechtsarbeit, der feministischen Frauenorganisierung seit den 1970ern mit RAWA, dem Kampf gegen die Straflosigkeit von Kriegsverbrechern beziehungsweise dem besatzungskritischen Aufbau demokratischer Strukturen tätig sind. (Malang Kohestani, Afghan story collector and singer) About the necessity and challenge to research de-colonially Afghan grassroots and feminist actors clearly express their contradiction to external peacebuilding - but they are not heard. Their analyzes and ideas are largely excluded from politics and science. Mechthild Exo can show that this is reflected in the colonial, epistemic violence in world politics. She vividly and vividly presents the "undesirable knowledge" of four Afghan organizations that are active in artistic human rights work, feminist women's organization with RAWA since the 1970s, the fight against the impunity of war criminals and the establishment of democratic structures critical of the occupation.
