Shardik is a fantasy of tragic character, centered on the long-awaited reincarnation of the gigantic bear Shardik and his appearance among the half-barbaric Ortelgan people. Mighty, ferocious, and unpredictable, Shardik changes the life of every person in the story. His advent commences a momentous chain of events. Kelderek the hunter, who loves and trusts the great bear, is swept on by destiny to become first devotee and then prophet, then victorious soldier, then ruler of an empire and priest-king of Lord Shardik--Messenger of God--only to discover to ever-deeper layers of meaning implicit in his passionate belief in the bear's divinity. --from publisher description

The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, is one of America's best-known novels. In his Reader's Companion to this new edition, Daniel Dyer provides a wealth of annotations explaining the book's many "sourdough" expressions and geographical references in order to help the modern reader see what London saw. Dyer also identifies characters in the novel - human and canine alike - whom London had known, and he spices his annotations with Northern lore and tales from that astonishing time Many of the editions of The Call of the Wild currently in print are distortions of the original text: The violence has been modified, the rough language sanitized, the punctuation and spelling modernized. This new edition duplicates the original first book edition, which London himself edited and approved. In writing the novel, Jack London did not venture far from his own experiences in California and the Klondike, and, indeed, each of the fifty place-names in the tale can be pinpointed on the maps that accompany this edition

"Pairing a book with such activities as a trip to the zoo, a nighttime look at the stars, or a walk in the forest can connect children to nature while inspiring discussion and questions. Teacher and librarian Kathleen T. Isaacs spotlights recent informational and picture books appropriate for children ages up to 10 that will help parents and caregivers encourage children's wonder and enthusiasm for nature. Themed chapters such as "Backyard and Garden," "From the Earth to the Sky and Beyond," "Plants and Trees," "Animals in Captivity," "Children's Songs and Traditional Tales," and "Books for Babies and Toddlers" identify titles on nature-related subjects that kids love, while also offering supplemental activities that adults and children can do together, such as a backyard bird count and things to look for at an aquarium. The hundreds of quality books listed and annotated in this resource will enrich the joy and excitement of nature for readers of all ages"..
