The Gospel of Thomas (GThom) is a collection of sayings, most of which come with the stereotypical introduction ‘Jesus said: …’ The GThom thus looks like a loose collection of disparate material. However, several sayings in the collection are introduced by ‘He said: …’, thus omitting explicit reference to Jesus as the speaker. This points to greater (narrative) coherence: when the speaker's name is missing in a logion, the logion depends on the surrounding context and ceases to be a self-contained unit. This article views the GThom as a sayings collection on the way to becoming a literary composition titled ‘The Gospel according to Thomas’., German abstractDas Thomasevangelium (EvThom) ist eine Sammlung von Jesusworten (Logien).

The aim of this paper is to reassess the role played by the Sethians in 4th and 5th century Egyptian Christianity. It offers an extensive survey of the source evidence, directing particular attention to the texts outside the Nag Hammadi corpus. The contribution focuses on the manuscripts as they functioned in the Coptic Christian milieu, proving that Sethian theology triggered affirmative (Hyp. Arch., Orig. World) as well as polemical reinterpretations (Jeuian works), overt polemics (Das koptische Buch), refutations of the Church polemicists (Epiphanius) and decompositions and reuses in the various texts of ritual power. Such a deep and diverse influence likely could not be exerted by long-dead heresies, but rather by the ideas still vivid and shared by the individuals and groups. I propose to locate these people within the Church, where, only rarely embattled, they smoothly contributed with their original heritage to Egyptian Christianity.
