    The Blitz Companion offers a unique overview of a century of aerial warfare, its impact on cities and the people who lived in them. It tells the story of aerial warfare from the earliest bombing raids and in World War 1 through to the London Blitz and Allied bombings of Europe and Japan. These are compared with more recent American air campaigns over Cambodia and Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s, the NATO bombings during the Balkan Wars of the 1990s and subsequent bombings in the aftermath of 9/11. Beginning with the premonitions and predictions of air warfare and its terrible consequences, the book focuses on air raids precautions, evacuation and preparations for total war, and resilience, both of citizens and of cities. The legacies of air raids, from reconstruction to commemoration, are also discussed. While a key theme of the book is the futility of many air campaigns, care is taken to situate them in their historical context.     US society has controversially debated civil-military relationships and war trauma since the Vietnam War. Civic activists today promote Indigenous warrior traditions as role models for non-Native veteran reintegration and health care. They particularly stress the role of ritual and narrative for civil-military negotiations of war experience and for trauma therapy. Applying a cultural-comparative lens, this book reads non-Native soldiers’ and veterans’ life writing from post-9/11 wars as «ceremonial storytelling.» It analyzes activist academic texts, «milblogs» written in the war zone, as well as «homecoming scenarios.» Soldiers’ and veterans’ interactions with civilians constitute jointly constructed, narrative civic rituals that discuss the meaning of war experience and homecoming.

    War Remains is an interdisciplinary anthology dealing with the mediations and sense-making narratives of war deaths and suffering in the era of the world wars. In the first half of the 20th century, more than 120 million people died an untimely or violent death – on the battlefield, in concentration camps, through fierce air strikes or as casualties of the many epidemics and hardships that followed on the heels of war. The experiences and narratives of war that flowed through different media of the time were often focused on the emotional, the personal, the everyday, and the subjective. The horrifying experiences of mass death lingered on in cultural narratives for years, repeating, reinforcing, and renegotiating people’s beliefs about war and suffering.

     

    The authors apply perspectives from a variety of scholarly fields such as history, media history, human rights studies, journalism, film studies, comparative literature, publishing studies, and rhetoric. Focusing on the period between the 1910s and 1970s, they show how literary fiction, newspapers, radio, film, comic books, and weekly magazines communicated the realities of war and turned the trauma into something that could be situated within the conventions of public display.

     

    The book consists of an introduction by the editors, seven individual cases by different authors, and the editors’ postscript. In the introduction chapter by Cronqvist and Sturfelt, the book is placed within the research fields of the cultural history of war and sensing and mediating war. These discussions lead up to an argument for a new and innovative way of studying the subject by bridging the gap between historical studies on memory and media studies of memory, and instead apply an interdisciplinary perspective of a media history of war remains. This approach insists on the importance of media forms and historical context for remembering and sensing war.

     

    The following seven individual chapters draw on a diverse range of sources and empirical examples to offer a comparison of different forms and expressions of media over an extended period. In chapter 2, Qvarnström analyses the First World War novels by the Swedish author Anna Lenah Elgström and discusses fiction as media. In chapter 3, Sturfelt analyses Save the Children’s humanitarian reporting and the visual discourses on starving children in the interwar period. Chapter 4 by Skoog examines the BBC radio correspondent Audrey Russell reporting and remembering the Second World War. In chapter 5, Bergström analyses media strategies and films by the Swedish European Aid in the late 1940s. In chapter 6, Cronqvist deals with memory, mediation, and decentring in John Hersey’s ‘Hiroshima’ from 1946. Chapter 7 by Kärrholm analyses motifs, paratexts, and other framing devices in EC’s Cold War comics. Finally, in chapter 8, Saarenmaa examines the circulation of Nazi imagery and generational layers of cultural remembrance in men’s magazines in the 1960s and 1970s.

     

    In the postscript, the editors Cronqvist and Sturfelt summarize the core arguments of the book: the significance of war representations alongside media forms, the importance of the visual, the value of shifting temporal and spatial foci, the highlighting of gendered aspects of war remains, and the intractable focus on the remembering and grieving survivor. They then suggest some possible directions for future research within the field and end up emphasizing the value of a media history of war remains for understanding both past and present conflicts.

    Lesya Ivasyuk wirft zum ersten Mal einen umfassenden und interdisziplinären Blick auf die polnische Revolution von 1846. Sie zeigt auf, dass dieses 171 Jahre zurückliegende Ereignis - trotz seines geographisch gesehen engen Rahmens - ein Vorbote des „Völkerfrühlings“ war und zahlreiche Modernisierungsversuche verursachte. Der Ausbruch der Revolution in der österreichischen Randprovinz Galizien wühlte ganz Europa auf. Zum wiederholten Mal stand die polnische Frage auf der Tagesordnung, wobei die Rolle der Bauern entscheidend war. Die österreichische Monarchie wurde wegen ihrer Vorgehensweise bei der Niederschlagung zur Zielscheibe der internationalen Kritik. Die von der Autorin herangezogene und von ihr begrifflich erweiterte historische Hermeneutik ermöglichte qualitativ neue Interpretationen dieses Ereignisses.     This book analyses soldiers’ memoirs from the Great War of 1914-18 from Britain, France and Germany. It considers both the authors’ composition of the memoirs and the public response to them. It provides contextual analysis through a survey of the different types of contemporary writing about the Great War, through an analysis of changes in the language used to describe combat, and through an analysis of those people whose accounts of the war were either excluded or marginalised. It also considers the international response to the most successful of the texts. The purpose of the analysis is to show how soldiers’ memoirs contributed to the collective memory of the war and how they influenced public opinion about the war. These texts are both autobiographical and historical and their relationship to the fields of autobiography and historical writing is also considered, as well as to the distinction between fact and fiction 1.     Rüstungen gehören wahrscheinlich zu den allgemein bekanntesten Objekten des Mittelalters. Schon kleine Kinder wissen vermeintlich was eine ,Ritterrüstung‘ ist und, dass diese ins Mittelalter gehört. Aber entgegen dieser landläufigen Vorstellung trugen nicht nur Ritter derartige Harnische, sondern nahezu jeder Mann des Spätmittelalters besaß und nutzte Rüstungen, auch Bürger, Bauern und sogar einige Weltgeistliche. Diese Tatsache lässt auf eine breite Kenntnis der mannigfachen Arten von Rüstungen in der spätmittelalterlichen Gesellschaft schließen. Dies wiederum ermöglichte den Künstlern unterschiedliche Aussagen mittels der Darstellung verschiedener Arten von Rüstungen. Dabei konnten sie sich sowohl auf die tatsächlichen Unterschiede in der zeitgenössischen Nutzungspraxis beziehen, vom pragmatischen Körperschutz bis zum vergoldeten Harnisch, als auch von ihr deutlich abweichen. Die Rüstungsteile wurden somit zu Trägern differenzierter Bedeutungen, die relevante Aussagen über die in Kunstwerken dargestellten Figuren und Geschichten vermitteln konnten. Die Untersuchung vielfältiger Quellen des Spätmittelalters offenbart ein facettenreiches Bild der spätmittelalterlichen Rüstungen, deren Nutzung in Krieg und Frieden und deren bildlicher Wiedergaben in der Kunst. Die herangezogenen Quellen reichen von literarischen Werken zur symbolischen Bedeutung ritterlicher Waffen, zahlreichen Vorgaben zum Rüstungsbesitz in Stadt und Land, Musterungslisten und Inventaren, Anweisungen aus geistlichen Spielen und Fastnachtsspielen über schriftlich und bildlich festgehaltene Vorgaben vor Anfertigung der eigentlichen Kunstwerke bis hin zu den zahlreichen Kunstwerken mit Darstellungen geharnischter Figuren, seien es (Grab-) Skulpturen, Wandmalereien, Tafelgemälde, Buchmalereien, Zeichnungen oder Druckgrafik. Eine gründliche Analyse der zeitgenössisch-spätmittelalterlichen Begriffe ermöglicht ein genaueres Verständnis der zahlreichen zitierten Quellen und bringt interessante Ergebnisse hervor. Die Untersuchung der in über 300 Abbildungen wiedergegebenen spätmittelalterlichen Kunstwerke verdeutlicht die vier hauptsächlichen Varianten Rüstungen darzustellen (zeitgenössisch, altmodisch, antikisierend oder phantastisch) und zeigt darüber hinaus die mitunter überraschenden Möglichkeiten, mittels kleiner Details zu den zeitgenössischen Rezipienten ,zu sprechen‘, um Bedeutungen und Inhalt der Kunstwerke zu vermitteln.

Zum wiederholten Mal stand die polnische Frage auf der Tagesordnung, wobei die Rolle der Bauern entscheidend war. Die österreichische Monarchie wurde wegen ihrer Vorgehensweise bei der Niederschlagung zur Zielscheibe der internationalen Kritik. Die von der Autorin herangezogene und von ihr begrifflich erweiterte historische Hermeneutik ermöglichte qualitativ neue Interpretationen dieses Ereignisses.
