Preliminary Material -- Preface -- Abbreviations and Signs -- Introduction -- Arachnids, Invertebrates and Lepidoptera -- Avian and Serpentine -- Myriad Arboreal, Mammalian, Feline and Lupine -- Melusinas, Nymphs, Water Sprites and Undinas -- Christoph Ransmayr's Die letzte welt (1988) -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Index. The origins of selected instances of metamorphosis in Germanic literature are traced from their roots in Ovid’s Metamorphoses , grouped roughly on an ‘ascending evolutionary scale’ (invertebrates, birds, animals, and mermaids). Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid’s Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Metamorphosis is most often used as an index of crisis: an existential crisis of the subject or a crisis in a society’s moral, social or cultural values. Specifically selected texts for analysis include Jeremias Gotthelf’s Die schwarze Spinne (1842) with the terrifying metamorphoses of Christine into a black spider, the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa in Kafka’s Die Verwandlung (1915), ambiguous metamorphoses in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Der goldne Topf (1814), Hermann Hesse’s Piktors Verwandlungen (1925), Der Steppenwolf (1927) and Christoph Ransmayr’s Die letzte Welt (1988). Other mythical metamorphoses are examined in texts by Bachmann, Fouqué, Fontane, Goethe, Nietzsche, Nelly Sachs, Thomas Mann and Wagner, and these and many others confirm that metamorphosis is used historically, scientifically, for religious purposes; to highlight identity, sexuality, a dream state, or for metaphoric, metonymic or allegorical reasons

This new monograph on Apuleius' Isis Book not only brings together the striking diversity of opinions that continues to enliven the discussion about Book Eleven, but also sets new trends in reading the narrative in its literary, religious, archaeological and cultural context. Through a variety of approaches, including religious studies (ancient mystery cult), textual criticism, literary analysis, Greek philosophy, and archaeology, the volume sheds new light on important aspects of Book XI, such as the relation with Plutarch’s De Iside et Osiride ; aspects of Lucius’ multifarious physical self-presentation as an Isiac convert; aspects of style and language (wordplay), textual problems in relation to problems of interpretation; the role of Providence and Platonic philosophy, and numerous metaliterary and intertextual aspects

Mckinley -- INDEX /Kathryn L. Mckinley. This study investigates the reception of Ovid's heroines in Metamorphoses commentaries written between 1100 and 1618. The Ovidian heroine offers a telling window onto medieval and early modern clerical constructions of gender and selfhood. In the context of classical representations of the feminine, the book examines Ovid's engagement of the heroine to explore problems of intentionality. The second part of the study presents commentaries by such clerics as William of Orléans, the \'Vulgate\' commentator, Thomas Walsingham, and Raphael Regius, illustrating the reception of the Ovidian heroine in medieval France and England as well as in Renaissance Italy and Germany. The works analyzed here show that clerical readings of the feminine in Ovid reflect greater heterogeneity than is commonly alleged. Both moralizing summaries and Latin editions used as schooltexts are discussed

The temporal inconsistencies in Ovid’s "Metamorphoses" are just as multifaceted and numerous as the image that has revealed itself in previous interpretations of these text phenomena – often referred to as "anachronisms" – is blurry and diverse. This volume looks at theories of fiction and language to carry out a systematic reevaluation of Ovid’s poem that does justice to its ambitious aesthetics both in terms of theory and text analysis.

On the basis of three transmission sources, it examines developments in translation and the history of book printing, and discusses three central interpretations of the »Golden Ass«, pinpointing their relations to ancient and medieval traditions in the reception of the »Metamorphoses«. The author traces the German reception of the »Golden Ass« as far as Grimmelshausen, whose interpretation of the »Metamorphoses« casts significant light on the genesis of the modern novel

Main description: The study identifies metamorphosis as a form of poetic contemplation in which literary imagination divides the flow of time into graphic timepoints. Whereas the concept of ongoing metamorphosis is most frequently encountered in nature philosophy, complex metamorphosis narratives notably reflect upon and criticize the concept of discrete metamorphosis which plays a significant role in mythology and religion. The systematic reconstruction of a poetics of epic metamorphoses is followed by interpretations of Ovid's »Metamorphoses« and relevant 20th century narratives by Kafka, Carl Einstein, Christoph Ransmayr and Steffen Mensching

The text of Ovid's Metamorphoses is not as indisputably established as one might think. Many passages are still obscure or plainly corrupt. 550 manuscripts, 500 editions and reprints, as well as countless critical notes and works must be taken into account when trying to establish the most reliable text for new generations of readers. This volume provides a detailed line-by-line analysis of Book XIII and offers thereby an indispensable starting point for a new critical edition not only of this but also of other parts of the poem

Apuleius' tale of Cupid and Psyche has been popular since it was first written in the second century CE as part of his Latin novel Metamorphoses. Often treated as a standalone text, Cupid and Psyche has given rise to treatments in the last 400 years as diverse as plays, masques, operas, poems, paintings and novels, with a range of diverse approaches to the text.Apuleius' story of the love between the mortal princess Psyche (or "Soul") and the god of Love has fascinated recipients as varied as Romantic poets, psychoanalysts, children's books authors, neo-Platonist philosophers and Disney film producers. These readers themselves produced their own responses to and versions of the story. This volume is the first broad consideration of the reception of C&P in Europe since 1600 and an adventurous interdisciplinary undertaking. It is the first study to focus primarily on material in English, though it also ranges widely across literary genres in Italian, French and German, encompassing poetry, drama and opera as well as prose fiction and art history, studied by an international team of established and young scholars.Detailed studies of single works and of whole genres make this book relevant for students of Classics, English, Art History, opera and modern film

"This extract from Ovid's 'Theban History' recounts the confrontation of Pentheus, king of Thebes, with his divine cousin, Bacchus, the god of wine. Notwithstanding the warnings of the seer Tiresias and the cautionary tale of a character Acoetes (perhaps Bacchus in disguise), who tells of how the god once transformed a group of blasphemous sailors into dolphins, Pentheus refuses to acknowledge the divinity of Bacchus or allow his worship at Thebes. Enraged, yet curious to witness the orgiastic rites of the nascent cult, Pentheus conceals himself in a grove on Mt. Cithaeron near the locus of the ceremonies. But in the course of the rites he is spotted by the female participants who rush upon him in a delusional frenzy, his mother and sisters in the vanguard, and tear him limb from limb. The episode abounds in themes of abiding interest, not least the clash between the authoritarian personality of Pentheus, who embodies 'law and order', masculine prowess, and the martial ethos of his city, and Bacchus, a somewhat effeminate god of orgiastic excess, who revels in the delusional and the deceptive, the transgression of boundaries, and the blurring of gender distinctions. This course book offers a wide-ranging introduction, the original Latin text, study aids with vocabulary, and an extensive commentary. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, Gildenhard and Zissos's incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at AS and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis to encourage critical engagement with Ovid's poetry and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought."--Publisher's website Acknowledgements -- Abbreviations -- Symbols and Terms -- Reference Works -- Grammatical Terms -- Ancient Literature -- Introduction. 1.
