"War Memories explores the patchwork formed by collective memory, public remembrance, private recollection, and the ways in which they form a complex composition of observations, initiatives, and experiences. Offering an international perspective on war commemoration, contributors consider the process of assembling historical facts and subjective experiences to show how these points of view diverge according to various social, cultural, political, and historical perspectives. Encompassing the representations of wars in the English-speaking world over the last hundred years or so, this collection presents an extensive, yet integrated, reflection on various types of commemorations and interpretations of events. Essays respond to common questions regarding war memory: how and why do we remember war? What does commemoration tell us about the actors in wars? How does commemoration reflect contemporary society's culture of war? War Memories disseminates current knowledge on the performance, interpretation, and rewriting of facts and events during and after wars, while focusing on how patriotic fervour, resistance, conscientious objection, injury, trauma, and propaganda contribute to the shaping of individual and collective memory."--

"The Remembered Dead explores the ways poets of the First World War - and later poets writing in the memory of that war - address the difficult question of how to remember, and commemorate, those killed in conflict. It looks closely at the way poets struggled to meaningfully represent dying, death, and the trauma of witness, while responding to the pressing need for commemoration. The authors pay close attention to specific poems while maintaining a strong awareness of literary and philosophical contexts. The poems are discussed in relation to modernism and myth, other forms of commemoration (photographs, memorials), and theories of cultural memory. There is fresh analysis of canonical poets which, at the same time, challenges the confines of the canon by integrating discussion of lesser-known figures, including non-combatants and poets of later decades. The final chapter reaches beyond the war's centenary in a discussion of one remarkable commemoration of Wilfred Owen"...

Main description: How do memories circulate transnationally and to what effect? How can we understand the enduring role of national memories and their simultaneous reconfiguration under globalization? This book charts the rich production of memory across and beyond national borders, thus giving new insight into the role of memory in the contemporary world. Though the institution of the Gulag was nominally closed over half a decade ago, it lives on as an often hotly contested site of memory in the post-socialist era. This ethnographic study takes a holistic, comprehensive approach to understanding memories of the Gulag, and particularly the language of commemoration that surrounds it in present-day Russian society. It focuses on four regions of particular historical significance-the Solovetsky Islands, the Komi Republic, the Perm region, and Kolyma-to carefully explore how memories become a social phenomenon, how objects become heritage, and how the human need to create places of memory has preserved the Gulag in specific ways today

The terms 'birth' and 'death' have long denoted the apparent boundaries of our biological lives, situating in time the moments of coming to be and passing away. Yet the specific trajectory of a life can surpass its temporal boundaries. Long after the perishing of the body, and of its physical remains, the individual's ethos can endure in the collective memories of survivors and subsequent generations. Such remnants have been created by rituals, reinforced through commemorations and obituaries, and projected through art and architecture. These powerful inducements to remember counter the finality of physical death, bridging the gap between absence and presence. 'Death: From Dust to Destiny', featuring a wide-ranging collection of texts and images together with the author's guiding commentary, offers a reflective meditation on the methods that artists, architects and writers have developed to activate memory, and animate their subjects into a - possibly - unending afterlife. In this process death need no longer be a terminal departure but can become a new form of existence in the minds of others

The Remembered Dead explores the ways poets of the First World War - and later poets writing in the memory of that war - address the difficult question of how to remember, and commemorate, those killed in conflict. The final chapter reaches beyond the war's centenary in a discussion of one remarkable commemoration of Wilfred Owen

It focuses on four regions of particular historical significance – the Solovetsky Islands, the Komi Republic, the Perm region, and Kolyma – to carefully explore how memories become a social phenomenon, how objects become heritage, and how the human need to create sites of memory has preserved the Gulag in specific ways today.

"This book examines four seventeenth- and eighteenth-century writers concerned with the ways in which the commercial print trade was transforming traditional models of literary authority and immortality. While all were excited by the memorial potential of the printed book, they also betray a profound anxiety about how the new conditions of authorship would effect the transmission of cultural memory, and their ability to participate in and even control that process. This study contributes to the current pursuit - in both literary studies and the social sciences - of histories of memory in Western culture, employing current scholarship from the social and natural sciences to delineate the nature of modern memory."--BOOK JACKET.

"Disaster Songs as Intangible Memorials in Atlantic Canada draws on a collection of over 500 Atlantic Canadian songs relating to disasters from 1891 up until the present, and describes the characteristics that define them as intangible memorials. The book demonstrates the relationship between vernacular memorials - informal memorials collectively and spontaneously created from objects and notes by the general public - and disaster songs. Author identifies the features that define vernacular memorials, and applies them to disaster songs: spontaneity; ephemerality; importance of place; motivations and meaning-making; content, as well as the role of media in inspiring and disseminating memorials and songs"--
