    The principle of R2P – “Responsibility to Protect” – is intended to successfully counteract the international community’s powerlessness and failure to act in the face of crises and humanitarian catastrophes. It commits the international community to intervene in cases of genocide and crimes against humanity – in extreme cases even against the will of the state concerned. Originally established in peacekeeping, R2P, in certain ways a Canadian “invention”, also involves other areas of operation such as diplomacy, literature, and the media. The 19 articles assembled in this volume, which discuss the concept and the history of ist realization, contain both general reflections on a new understanding of state sovereignty and case studies dealing with particularly explosive political situations (Sudan, Afghanistan). Furthermore, beyond the responsibility of the political and diplomatic instances, the texts examine that of the media as sources of information, and the role of literature which – far beyond mere documentary writing – develops its own strategies and scenarios of how conflicts can be solved. - La “responsabilité de protéger” (R2P) est la tentative de combattre l’impuissance et la passivité de la communauté internationale en cas de crises et de catastrophes humanitaires, c’est-à-dire d’intervenir en cas de génocide et de crime contre l’humanité, et dans le pire des cas, d’intervenir même contre la volonté de l’État concerné. Se référant à l’origine au “Peacekeeping”, le projet R2P qui s’est développé avec l’importante participation du Canada, met également à contribution d’autres secteurs comme la diplomatie, les médias et la littérature. Les 19 contributions de ce volume qui éclairent le concept et l’histoire de sa réalisation comprennent aussi bien des prises de position pour une nouvelle conception de la souveraineté que des études de cas sur des situations politiques explosives (Soudan, Afghanistan). De plus, au-delà de la responsabilité manifeste des instances politiques et diplomatiques, les textes rassemblés abordent la responsabilité des médias en tant que sources d’information, et l’apport de la littérature qui, bien au-delà d’une écriture “documentaire”, propose des stratégies et des scénarios pour résoudre des conflits.

    Von Georges Méliès über Alfred Hitchcock bis hin zu David Lynch – das Motiv der Box taucht in der Filmgeschichte immer wieder auf. Dabei konfrontiert es die Betrachter*innen mit einem medialen Paradox: Die Box ist sichtbar und umschließt zugleich einen Raum, der verborgen bleibt. Als Motiv birgt jede Box eine eigene Geschichte, die sich im Laufe des Films entfaltet. Damit ermöglicht sie eine kritische Perspektive auf das, was scheinbar selbsterklärend vor unseren Augen liegt. Ausgehend von konkreten Filmanalysen untersucht Nepomuk Zettl räumliche Einschlüsse im Film auf ihre narrativen, ästhetischen und epistemologischen Dimensionen und legt damit die erste Studie zu diesem omnipräsenten, aber bislang übersehenen Motiv vor.

Ihre Antworten stehen in einem reizvollen Kontrast zu Interviews, die 2007 entstanden und jetzt online zugänglich gemacht worden sind. Viele der ursprünglich Befragten sind erneut beteiligt, neue Stimmen kamen hinzu. Dabei zeigt sich im Vergleich: Die Medienwissenschaften sind diverser geworden, und manche Zukunftserwartung wurde drastisch revidiert.

    For decades, we have been told we live in the "information age"—a time when disruptive technological advancement has reshaped the categories and social uses of knowledge and when quantitative assessment is increasingly privileged. Such methodologies and concepts of information are usually considered the provenance of the natural and social sciences, which present them as politically and philosophically neutral. Yet the humanities should and do play an important role in interpreting and critiquing the historical, cultural, and conceptual nature of information.This book is one of two companion volumes that explore theories and histories of information from a humanistic perspective. They consider information as a long-standing feature of social, cultural, and conceptual management, a matter of social practice, and a fundamental challenge for the humanities today.Information: A Reader provides an introduction to the concept of information in historical, literary, and cultural studies. It features excerpts from more than forty texts by theorists and critics who have helped establish the notion of the "information age" or expand upon it. The reader establishes a canonical framework for thinking about information in humanistic terms.     Wenn stimmt, was bereits Friedrich Schiller beklagt hat: dass der Mensch in der modernen Gesellschaft "zum Formular geworden" ist, dann steht mit diesem unscheinbaren Verwaltungs-tool nichts weniger als unsere Lebenswirklichkeit auf dem Spiel. Der erste (Open Access-)Band der Reihe AdminiStudies beschäftigt sich deshalb mit der Funktion und Geschichte von Formularen, jenen institutionalisierten Lückentexten, die den Alltag der Bürger dadurch entscheidend prägen, dass sie die Befehlsgewalt des Staats und seinen Willen zum Wissen auf zwingende Weise verschränken. Von Blanketten und handgeschriebenen Formularbüchern über Vordrucke zur militärischen und steuerlichen Erfassung bis hin zu den Telegramm-Vorlagen des 19. Jahrhunderts und zu den digitalen Schreibfeldern heutiger Ämter und Social Media reicht die Macht- und Mediengeschichte des Formulars. Die Grenze zwischen Untertanen, Bürgern und Kunden ist durchlässig geworden, und an den Affordanzen digitaler Formulare lassen sich die gegenwärtigen Bauformen administrativer Herrschaft ablesen.

    Storm is the most recognized Black woman comic book character in the world. Born Ororo Munroe, Storm is an Omega level mutant, which makes her one of the most powerful beings on the planet. Hero Me Not: The Containment of the Most Powerful Black, Female Superhero examines the multifaceted dimensions of the comic book character seeking to discover if Storm’s nearly unlimited power equally offers her freedom within the "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy." Adopting Patricia Hill Collin’s Controlling Images as essential to the representation of Black women’s lives within the media, Hero Me Not juxtaposes Storm to Collins’ images of the mammy and jezebel, expanding this analysis to include the creation of a new stereotype that Burke coins Negro Spiritual Woman. Using personal anecdotes, pop culture and social and cultural references, each chapter focuses on the history, and different incarnations of Storm’s comic and film development over the years while integrating contemporary racial politics to hold space for Black female voices that have heretofore been silenced by the creation of a powerful Black woman who only uses her power in support of whiteness.

    History has always been a matter of arranging evidence into a narrative, but the public debate over the meanings we attach to a given history can seem particularly acute in our current age. Like all artistic mediums, comics possess the power to mold history into shapes that serve its prospective audience and creator both. It makes sense, then, that history, no stranger to the creation of hagiographies, particularly in the service of nationalism and other political ideologies, is so easily summoned to the panelled page. Comics, like statues, museums, and other vehicles for historical narrative, make both monsters and heroes of men while fuelling combative beliefs in personal versions of United States history. Drawing the Past, Volume 1: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the United States, the first book in a two-volume series, provides a map of current approaches to comics and their engagement with historical representation.     In Drawing the Past, Volume 2: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the World, contributors seek to examine the many ways in which history worldwide has been explored and (re)represented through comics and how history is a complex construction of imagination, reality, and manipulation. Through a close analysis of such works as V for Vendetta, Maus, and Persepolis, this volume contends that comics are a form of mediation between sources (both primary and secondary) and the reader. Historical comics are not drawn from memory but offer a nonliteral interpretation of an object (re)constructed in the creator’s mind. Indeed, when it comes to history, stretching the limits of the imagination only serves to aid in our understanding of the past and, through that understanding, shape ourselves and our futures.This volume, the second in a two-volume series, is divided into three sections: History and Form, Historical Trauma, and Mythic Histories.- The first section considers the relationship between history and the comic book form. The second section engages academic scholarship on comics that has recurring interest in the representation of war and trauma. The final section looks at mythic histories that consciously play with events that did not occur but nonetheless inflect our understanding of history.     Die Möglichkeit zu protestieren legitimiert demokratische Gesellschaften. In Protesten werden ihr konstitutiver sozialer und kultureller Pluralismus ausgehandelt und alternative politische Handlungsfelder eröffnet. Durch Sprache wird Protest nicht lediglich Ausdruck verliehen, vielmehr wird Protest durch den Gebrauch von Sprache und anderen Zeichen überhaupt erst hervorgebracht. In den Fokus der linguistischen Protestforschung rücken somit semiotische Praktiken der Protestkommunikation. Relevanz erhält das Protestieren durch seine Öffentlichkeit und Medialität. Dabei hat sich die Art und Weise, wie Menschen protestieren, mit der Zeit verändert. Zur Debatte steht demnach der Wandel des Verhältnisses von Protestkommunikation, Medien und Öffentlichkeit. Die Vielfalt historischer und medialer Protestpraktiken fordert ihre Erforschung heraus und diversifiziert das Feld der für die linguistische Protestforschung relevanten Daten und anzuwendenden Methoden. Der Band vereint daher Arbeiten der linguistischen Protestforschung, die sich empirisch fundiert mit Fragen der pragmatischen Relevanz sprachlicher und bildlicher Konstitutionsformen politischen Protests, deren Medialitäten und Modalitäten sowie deren Historizität auseinandersetzen.
