    Von anderen Funktionseliten unterscheiden sich Politiker in wesentlichen Merkmalen: eher (unter-)durchschnittliche Vergütung, hohe zeitliche Belastung, öffentliche Exponiertheit mit allen Risiken und das in vielen Umfragen erhärtete geringe gesellschaftliche Ansehen. Diese Dissertation hat mit leitfadengestützten Interviews den Versuch unternommen, die persönlichen Beweggründe für die Berufswahl ausgesuchter Persönlichkeiten zu erfassen.Führungsverhalten wurde von den Befragten früh, in der Peer Group, eingeübt. Das mit dem Parteibeitritt manifestierte politische Engagement wurde als Überzeugungsakt ohne Nutzenkalkül geschildert. Die Sichtbarkeit auf der politischen Bühne hat sich als entscheidender Anreiz für „Politik als Beruf“ erwiesen. Grundvoraussetzung für berufliche politische Arbeit ist das Vertrauen in die Wirksamkeit politischen Handelns.„Politiker brauchen den Willen zur Macht.“ Trotz Bejahung dieses Satzes wird bei der Beschreibung der eigenen Motive das Leistungsmotiv vorgezogen. Ohne das Machtmotiv als zentrale Triebkraft lassen sich die Alleinstellungsmerkmale dieses Berufs nicht erklären. Im Kern ist Macht Führung, während Leistung ohne direkte Interaktion auskommen kann. Politicians differ from other elite professional groups in significant ways: they receive a (below) average salary, their work is extremely time-consuming, they remain in the public eye constantly, which can be highly problematic, and many surveys confirm that their social standing has diminished considerably. Based on partially guided interviews, this dissertation endeavours to document and explain why the individuals interviewed chose politics as their profession.Those interviewees reveal that they developed and honed their leadership skills among their peer group at a young age. They portray their commitment to politics by becoming a member of a party as an act of political conviction rather than a calculated means of furthering their careers. They disclose how the opportunity to be in the public eye that the political stage affords them played a decisive role in them opting to enter the profession of politics, and that the fundamental prerequisite for them wanting to work in politics is their conviction that political action is effective.Although the interviewees confirm the general belief that politicians need to desire power, the way they describe their reasons for deciding to work in politics reveals that achievement is more important to them. However, the incentive of gaining power is a key driving force behind their choice of profession, without which the unique features of this occupation can-not be explained. In essence, power is leadership, while achievement can be realised without direct interaction.

    Von anderen Funktionseliten unterscheiden sich Politiker in wesentlichen Merkmalen: eher (unter-)durchschnittliche Vergütung, hohe zeitliche Belastung, öffentliche Exponiertheit mit allen Risiken und das in vielen Umfragen erhärtete geringe gesellschaftliche Ansehen. Diese Dissertation hat mit leitfadengestützten Interviews den Versuch unternommen, die persönlichen Beweggründe für die Berufswahl ausgesuchter Persönlichkeiten zu erfassen.Führungsverhalten wurde von den Befragten früh, in der Peer Group, eingeübt. Das mit dem Parteibeitritt manifestierte politische Engagement wurde als Überzeugungsakt ohne Nutzenkalkül geschildert. Die Sichtbarkeit auf der politischen Bühne hat sich als entscheidender Anreiz für „Politik als Beruf“ erwiesen. Grundvoraussetzung für berufliche politische Arbeit ist das Vertrauen in die Wirksamkeit politischen Handelns.„Politiker brauchen den Willen zur Macht.“ Trotz Bejahung dieses Satzes wird bei der Beschreibung der eigenen Motive das Leistungsmotiv vorgezogen. Ohne das Machtmotiv als zentrale Triebkraft lassen sich die Alleinstellungsmerkmale dieses Berufs nicht erklären. Im Kern ist Macht Führung, während Leistung ohne direkte Interaktion auskommen kann. Politicians differ from other elite professional groups in significant ways: they receive a (below) average salary, their work is extremely time-consuming, they remain in the public eye constantly, which can be highly problematic, and many surveys confirm that their social standing has diminished considerably. Based on partially guided interviews, this dissertation endeavours to document and explain why the individuals interviewed chose politics as their profession.Those interviewees reveal that they developed and honed their leadership skills among their peer group at a young age. They portray their commitment to politics by becoming a member of a party as an act of political conviction rather than a calculated means of furthering their careers. They disclose how the opportunity to be in the public eye that the political stage affords them played a decisive role in them opting to enter the profession of politics, and that the fundamental prerequisite for them wanting to work in politics is their conviction that political action is effective.Although the interviewees confirm the general belief that politicians need to desire power, the way they describe their reasons for deciding to work in politics reveals that achievement is more important to them. However, the incentive of gaining power is a key driving force behind their choice of profession, without which the unique features of this occupation can-not be explained. In essence, power is leadership, while achievement can be realised without direct interaction.

    Abstract: Der Beitrag analysiert das IMC-Gitter (Individual Motive Constellations) in Hinblick auf Reliabilität und Gültigkeit der faktoriellen Struktur. Das IMC-Gitter erhebt den Anspruch, Leistungs-, Macht- und Anschlussmotive simultan erheben zu können. Der Beitrag beruht auf den Daten von N=244 Probanden, welche im Rahmen von Personalauswahlprozessen erhoben wurden. Nach einleitenden Bemerkungen werden die Entstehungsgeschichte und empirische Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz des Instruments berichtet. Eine anschließende Itemanalyse zeigt überwiegend akzeptable Schwierigkeiten, hohe Trennschärfen sowie befriedigende bis gute interne Konsistenzen für die einzelnen Skalen. Eine konfirmatorische Faktorenanalyse bestätigt zumindest fünf der sechs postulierten Faktoren des IMC-Gitters. Es zeigt sich, dass das IMC-Gitter die aus der Leistungsmotivationsforschung bekannte zweidimensionale Struktur des Motivs 'Furcht vor Misserfolg' nicht abbilden kann.
