    In this highly original study of the nature of performance, Spencer Golub uses the insights of Ludwig Wittgenstein into the way language works to analyze the relationship between the linguistic and the visual in the work of a broad range of dramatists, novelists, and filmmakers, among them Richard Foreman, Mac Wellman, Peter Handke, David Mamet, and Alfred Hitchcock. Like Wittgenstein, these artists are concerned with the limits of language’s representational capacity. For Golub, it is these limits that give Wittgenstein’s thought a further, very personal significance—its therapeutic quality with respect to the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from which he suffers.

     

    Underlying what Golub calls “performance behavior” is Wittgenstein’s notion of “pain behavior”—that which gives public expression to private experience. Golub charts new directions for exploring the relationship between theater and philosophy, and even for scholarly criticism itself.

    The value based approach restores the ancient idea that quality of life and of society is what the economy is all about. It advocates shifting the focus from quantities (“how much?”) to qualities (“what is important?”).

    How does language work? How does language produce truth and beauty? Eleventh-century Arabic scholarship has detailed answers to these universal questions. Language Between God and the Poets reads the theory of four major scholars and asks how the conceptual vocabulary they shared enabled them to create theory in lexicography, theology, logic, and poetics. Their ideas engaged God and poetry at the nexus of language, mind, and reality. Their core conceptual vocabulary carved reality at the joints in a manner quite different from Anglophone and European thought in any period. This vocabulary centered around the words maʿnā (“mental content”) and ḥaqīqah (“accuracy”), two concepts for which Alexander Key develops a translation methodology with the help of Wittgenstein and Kuhn. Language Between God and the Poets helps us see how fundamental the lexicon and lexicography can be to all kinds of theory, how theology can be a science of naming, how logic interacts with language, and how poetic affect can be built on grammar and logic. The four scholars are ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī, Ibn Fūrak, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī.

    In seinem gleichnamigen Roman entwirft Hermann Hesse die Idee eines Glasperlenspiels, welches '[…] vom Glasperlenspieler so gespielt wie eine Orgel vom Organisten, und diese Orgel ist von einer kaum auszudenkenden Vollkommenheit, ihre Manuale und Pedale tasten den ganzen geistigen Kosmos ab, ihre Register sind beinahe unzählig, theoretisch ließe mit diesem Instrument der ganze geistige Weltinhalt sich im Spiele reproduzieren.' Die Autoren entwickeln erstmals systematisch die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen solch eines universellen Spiels mit und um Wissen. Das begleitende Computerprogramm unterstützt den Spieler dabei, mit Wissen zu experimentieren. Damit spannt das Buch mit Methoden der Informatik einen großen Bogen von der Logik über Systemtheorie, Wissenschafts- und Erkenntnistheorie, Semiotik, Kognition bis zur Kommunikation.

    Wer philosophieren will, muss, methodisch betrachtet, vor allem drei Dinge tun: analysieren, argumentieren und interpretieren. Jeder - ob Erstsemester oder fortgeschrittener Student - kann mit diesem Buch lernen, selbst Begriffe zu analysieren, selbst Argumente zu verstehen, zu bewerten und zu entwickeln; im Unterschied zu anderen Einführungsbüchern kommt aber auch die Interpretation zu ihrem vollen Recht. Analysieren, Argumentieren und Interpretieren sind die Methoden der Philosophie, die hier mit Hilfe umfangreicher Übungsaufgaben und Lösungen ausführlich vorgestellt werden. In gewissem Sinne präsentiert dieses Studienbuch daher so etwas wie einen methodischen Werkzeugkasten, der sich ausgezeichnet für die Universität, aber gerade auch für das Selbststudium eignet. Wer mit diesen Methoden umzugehen weiß, wird nicht notwendigerweise gut philosophieren; aber ohne diese Methoden wird man schlechter philosophieren, als man es könnte. Das Buch enthält einen nützlichen Anhang mit einem philosophischen Kanon, den wichtigsten logischen Regeln und einem praxisnahen Register, das neben den deutschen auch alle wichtigen englischen Fachbegriffe umfasst

    Wer philosophieren will, muss, methodisch betrachtet, vor allem drei Dinge tun: analysieren, argumentieren und interpretieren. Jeder - ob Erstsemester oder fortgeschrittener Student - kann mit diesem Buch lernen, selbst Begriffe zu analysieren, selbst Argumente zu verstehen, zu bewerten und zu entwickeln; im Unterschied zu anderen Einführungsbüchern kommt aber auch die Interpretation zu ihrem vollen Recht. Analysieren, Argumentieren und Interpretieren sind die Methoden der Philosophie, die hier mit Hilfe umfangreicher Übungsaufgaben und Lösungen ausführlich vorgestellt werden. In gewissem Sinne präsentiert dieses Studienbuch daher so etwas wie einen methodischen Werkzeugkasten, der sich ausgezeichnet für die Universität, aber gerade auch für das Selbststudium eignet. Wer mit diesen Methoden umzugehen weiß, wird nicht notwendigerweise gut philosophieren; aber ohne diese Methoden wird man schlechter philosophieren, als man es könnte. Das Buch enthält einen nützlichen Anhang mit einem philosophischen Kanon, den wichtigsten logischen Regeln und einem praxisnahen Register, das neben den deutschen auch alle wichtigen englischen Fachbegriffe umfasst
