    In Part One, the author examines what is at stake in the complex relations between theory and practice in exchanges involving Paul de Man, Mikhail Bakhtin, Georg Lukacs, Bertolt Brecht, Walter Benjamin, Antonio Gramsci, and others. In Part Two, San Juan focuses on the materialist aesthetics of Louis Althusser and Pierre Machercy, examining their resonance in a Hemingway novel and in the poetry of Hugh MacDiarmid. In Part Three, the author conducts an appraisal of James Baldwin's worldview, the textualization of the Asian diaspora in the United States, and the interface between postmodern themes and "postcolonial" sensibilities The ultimate project of the author is to envision the emergence of a new field called "world cultural studies" from a radical "Third World" perspective. The transition from Western "hegemony" to the transformative, oppositional inquiry of "Others" epitomizes the itinerary of San Juan's exploration of the discipline once called litterae humaniores but now reconceived as the praxis of critical transgressions

    The discovery, exploration, and conquest of the New World is here imaginatively treated as a journey from fantasy to reality, from complicity to rejection, from mythification to criticism. Focusing on certain key firsthand narratives of the Spanish conquest, the author views various journals, letters, and other documents not merely as narratives of facts and events but as literary expressions of the dynamics of the writers' experience: recording the transformation of their perceptions of New World realities and showing the gradual development of a critical consciousness that questions their sense of identity and the validity of European cultural models. The author illuminates the conceptual and aesthetic developments that mark the beginnings of a new literature in the making. Gradually, the aesthetic requirements and canons of Europe are left behind as this new literature begins to convey the new realities of colonial Spanish America that shape the complex poetics of Alonso de Ercilla's great epic poem La Araucana. The book begins with analyses of texts by Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes, showing how the discourse of mythification fictionalizes both the New World itself and the nature and meaning of the conquest. Then, as the conquistadors' expeditions increasingly fail disillusionment engenders ideological crisis, questioning, and demythification, as exemplified in Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's Naufragios. The book concludes by synthesizing the various historical and aesthetic elements that led to the awakening in the conquistadors of a new, divided, and contradicting consciousness, whose first literary flowering was La Araucana.

    Entre 1831 y 1879 se producen cambios muy significativos en la política de Espan?a que tienen su correlato en la literatura. La enfermedad de Fernando VII, el nacimiento de la infanta Isabel y la designación de Mª Cristina como Reina Gobernadora, los sucesivos gobiernos, el reinado de Isabel II, la Primera República y la restauración monárquica en la figura de Alfonso XII son los hilos sobre los que la literatura va tejiendo su imaginario de España. Culturalmente, asistimos a los intentos de alfabetización generalizada que propone la Ley Moyano, al desarrollo de la Prensa de negocio, sustentada en el sistema liberal informativo, aún lastrado por sucesivos intentos de controlar la opinión pública, a un incipiente marco legal encaminado a proteger los derechos de autor, y al cambio en los modos de consumo sustentado en el folletín y la literatura por entregas; todo ello, en una coordenadas en que el escaso nivel de alfabetización explica la preponderancia de la cultura oral y visual a través del teatro y de espectáculos callejeros, más o menos complejos. Desde la revista Cartas Españolas (1831-32) a los Episodios Nacionales, especialmente en sus dos primeras series (1873-1879) se despliegan un sinfín de proyectos a través de los que escritores, editores e instituciones culturales diseñan su particular imaginario de la nación, para la que eligen sus respectivos parnasos, héroes y canon literario, sin olvidar la inclusión de la mujer que deja de ser mero objeto para convertirse también, con mayor o menor éxito, en sujeto literario.
