    In Western cultural history, 'tradition' is one of the central concepts to describe processes of reception and their impact. Especially in literary studies, traditions are often claimed by stating, for example, that a particular text stands 'in the tradition' of another text. Nevertheless, coherent theoretical reflection is often lacking. This volume approaches the general question "What is tradition?" and the more specific question "How can one adequately speak about literary traditions?" by theorizing the premises of the concept and by discussing its theoretical capacity on the basis of case studies from various constellations throughout literary and cultural history. ‚Tradition‘ zählt zu den zentralen Reflexionskategorien der abendländischen Kulturgeschichte, wenn es darum geht, Rezeptionsprozesse und deren Wirkmächtigkeit zu beschreiben. Gerade auch in der Literaturwissenschaft wird häufig von Traditionen gesprochen, etwa davon, dass ein Text ‚in der Tradition‘ eines anderen Texts stehe. Dennoch bleibt dabei das Konzept theoretisch oft unterbestimmt. Der vorliegende Band nähert sich mit theoretischen Grundlagenreflexionen und exemplarischen literatur- und kulturhistorischen Fallstudien aus verschiedenen literarischen Konstellationen und Epochen der generellen Frage „Was ist Tradition?“ und der spezifischeren Frage „Wie kann man adäquat über literarische Traditionen sprechen?“ an.

    "English literature," Yeats once noted, "has all but completely shaped itself in the printing press." Finding this true particularly of modernist writing, Jerome McGann demonstrates the extraordinary degree to which modernist styles are related to graphic and typographic design, to printed letters--"black riders" on a blank page--that create language for the eye. He sketches the relation of modernist writing to key developments in book design, beginning with the nineteenth-century renaissance of printing, and demonstrates the continued interest of postmodern writers in the "visible language" of modernism. McGann then offers a philosophical investigation into the relation of knowledge and truth to this kind of imaginative writing. Exploring the work of writers like William Morris, Emily Dickinson, W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein, as well as Laura Riding and Bob Brown, he shows how each exploits the visibilities of language, often by aligning their work with older traditions of so-called Adamic language. McGann argues that in modernist writing, philosophical nominalism emerges as a key aesthetic point of departure. Such writing thus develops a pragmatic and performative "answer to Plato" in the matter of poetry's relation to truth and philosophy

    Heinrich Wittenwilers Ring (um 1410) ist ein "Haupt- und Schlüsselwerk des Spätmittelalters" (M. Wehrli), in welchem die Sinnkrisen und Brüche des Übergangs vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit in einer komisch-didaktischen Erzählung von Liebeswerbung, Gewalt und Krieg, bis hin zum Weltkrieg, reflektiert werden. Er wird hier in einer neuen Übersetzung vorgelegt, die auf die einzige Handschrift zurückgeht und versucht, Wittenwilers Sprachgewalt, seiner Lust an der Verkehrung sprachlicher und soziokultureller Ordnungen, seinem Spiel mit allen Formen des Hässlichen und Obszönen, aber auch seiner tiefen Frömmigkeit und seiner - allerdings vergeblichen - Hoffnung auf einen Erfolg seiner Belehrungen in modernem Deutsch gerecht zu werden. Die Ausgabe bietet im Paralleldruck einen handschriftennahen Abdruck, den Text nach der Edition Edmund Wießners und eine neue Übersetzung. Die drei Spalten stellen je unterschiedliche Annäherungen an den Ring dar, wobei der handschriftennahe Abdruck die Arbeit mit dem historischen Text selbst, die Neuübersetzung größtmögliche Lesefreude ermöglichen soll. Der Abdruck des von Wießner edierten Textes soll die Kompatibilität mit der Forschung gewährleisten, zugleich aber auch die Differenzen zwischen Wießners Edition und dem Text der Münchener Handschrift transparent machen. Der Kommentar zu Text und Übersetzung beschränkt sich auf die wichtigsten Sachinformationen, um das Textverständnis für ein modernes Publikum zu erleichtern

    In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat die heftige Auseinandersetzung um die Literaturgeschichte offenbar nur geringfügig dazu beigetragen, dass ihr in den Debatten der Philologien noch ein gehobener Stellenwert eingeräumt wurde. Die Literaturgeschichte galt als tot. Immer aber war sie präsent in einer Fülle literaturgeschichtlicher Einführungsbände, die sich heute vor allem an die Studierenden in den Bachelorstudiengängen richten. Dies scheint den Befund nahezulegen, dass die Literaturgeschichte nach wie vor einen zentralen Bestandteil literaturwissenschaftlicher Forschung und Lehre ausmacht. In jüngerer Zeit aber ist eine Wiederbelebung nicht allein der Theoriedebatte um die Literaturgeschichte, sondern auch praktischer Unternehmungen im Feld zu beobachten. In diesem Band werden diese Überlegungen wiederaufgenommen und fortgeführt. Die BeiträgerInnen sichten den Bestand an diagnostizierten theoretischen Problemen, und diskutieren neue Modelle und Konzepte der Literaturgeschichtsschreibungen an konkreten Epochen, ihren Zäsuren und literarturhistorischen Kontinuitäten

What are the opportunities and obligations for book history, textual criticism, and bibliography when literary texts are distributed across digital platforms, devices, formats, and networks? Indeed, what is textual scholarship when the "text" of our everyday speech is a verb as often as it is a noun?These are the questions that motivate Matthew G. Kirschenbaum in Bitstreams, a distillation of twenty years of thinking about the intersection of digital media, textual studies, and literary archives. With an intimate narrative style that belies the cold technics of computing, Kirschenbaum takes the reader into the library where all access to Toni Morrison's "papers" is mediated by digital technology; to the bitmapped fonts of Kamau Brathwaite's Macintosh; to the process of recovering and restoring fourteen lost "HyperPoems" by the noted poet William Dickey; and finally, into the offices of Melcher Media, a small boutique design studio reimagining the future of the codex.A persistent theme is that bits—the ubiquitous ones and zeros of computing—are never self-identical, but always inflected by the material realities of particular systems, platforms, and protocols. In ihrem Zentrum steht die Figur des ungeschickten Deutschen. Sie kombiniert Aufrichtigkeit und Kreativität mit linkischem Verhalten. Das verstieß in der Frühen Neuzeit gegen die Regeln der höfischen Gesellschaft, wurde in der Aufklärung aber zum Zeichen poetischer Kraft und gehört seit der Romantik zum Konstrukt des deutschen Nationalcharakters. Von den Anfängen im 16. Jahrhundert über die Heroisierung des Ungeschicks zum Missgeschick bis zu seinem Verblassen in einer globalisierten Welt erzählt davon erstmals diese alternative Geschichte der deutschen Literatur.

    "English literature," Yeats once noted, "has all but completely shaped itself in the printing press." Finding this true particularly of modernist writing, Jerome McGann demonstrates the extraordinary degree to which modernist styles are related to graphic and typographic design, to printed letters--"black riders" on a blank page--that create language for the eye. He sketches the relation of modernist writing to key developments in book design, beginning with the nineteenth-century renaissance of printing, and demonstrates the continued interest of postmodern writers in the "visible language" of modernism. McGann then offers a philosophical investigation into the relation of knowledge and truth to this kind of imaginative writing. Exploring the work of writers like William Morris, Emily Dickinson, W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein, as well as Laura Riding and Bob Brown, he shows how each exploits the visibilities of language, often by aligning their work with older traditions of so-called Adamic language. McGann argues that in modernist writing, philosophical nominalism emerges as a key aesthetic point of departure. Such writing thus develops a pragmatic and performative "answer to Plato" in the matter of poetry's relation to truth and philosophy
