For more than thirty years, Fredric Jameson has been one of the most productive, wide-ranging, and distinctive literary theorists in the United States and the Anglophone world. Marxism and Form provided a pioneering account of the work of the major European Marxist theorists--T. W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Herbert Marcuse, Ernst Bloch, Georg Lukács, and Jean-Paul Sartre--work that was, at the time, largely neglected in the English-speaking world. Through penetrating readings of each theorist, Jameson developed a critical mode of engagement that has had tremendous in.uence. He provided a framework for analyzing the connection between art and the historical circumstances of its making--in particular, how cultural artifacts distort, repress, or transform their circumstances through the abstractions of aesthetic form. Jameson's presentation of the critical thought of this Hegelian Marxism provided a stark alternative to the Anglo-American tradition of empiricism and humanism. It would later provide a compelling alternative to poststructuralism and deconstruction as they became dominant methodologies in aesthetic criticism. One year after Marxism and Form, Princeton published Jameson's The Prison-House of Language (1972), which provided a thorough historical and philosophical description of formalism and structuralism. Both books remain central to Jameson's main intellectual legacy: describing and extending a tradition of Western Marxism in cultural theory and literary interpretation.

Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Totally Feathered Up in Bottletown: Imagining Manchester -- Chapter 3: Orpheus and His Limbic Decks: Avant-Pulp Bricolage and Rites Of Passage -- Chapter 4: Fractal Narrative and Chaos Theory: The Formal and Thematic Paradox Of Escapism -- Chapter 5: What Literature Thinks: Vurt and Neuroemancipation. This book offers an examination of Jeff Noon’s iconoclastic debut novel, Vurt (1993). In this first book-length study of the novel, which includes an extended interview with Noon, Wenaus considers how Vurt complicates the process of literary canonization, its constructivist relationship to genre, its violent and oneiric setting of Manchester, its use of the Orphic myth as an archetype for the practice of literary collage and musical remix, and how the structural paradoxes of chaos and fractal geometry inform the novel’s content, form, and theme. Finally, Wenaus makes the case for Vurt’s ongoing relevance in the 21st century, an era increasingly characterized by neuro-totalitarianism, psychopolitics, and digital surveillance. With Vurt, Noon begins his project of rupturing feedback loops of control by breaking narrative habits and embracing the contingent and unpredictable. An inventive, energetic, and heartbreaking novel, Vurt is also an optimistic and heartfelt call for artists to actively create open futures.

Preface -- List of illustrations -- 1. Preliminary remarks -- 2. The genre 'fairy tale' and its study -- 3. The children's and household tales as 'palimpsests': forms of the history of origin and transformation -- 4. Fairy tales as literature from literature -- 5. Postscript -- Bibliography. In this study, the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales are consistently examined as literature out of literature. Through the history of their creation and transformation, it becomes apparent how literary models were re-declared and transformed into the well-known fairy tale narratives, in the course of the editing process by the Brothers Grimm, essentially by Wilhelm Grimm. By means of a series of model studies – including Rapunzel, Jorinde und Joringel and Der Jude im Dorn – it is shown that the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, contrary to their traditional assessment as 'folk tales', are of literary origin and have a literary character themselves.

1 Introduction: Edgeworth and Abolition -- 2 Upstaging Abolition: Enlightened Hypocrisy in Whim for Whim -- 3 “The Appearance of Virtue”—Reading Abolition in Belinda -- 4 “The Good Aunt”: An Education in Abolition -- 5 Parodic Intervention in “The Grateful Negro” -- 6 Conclusion: Erasing Abolition in “The Two Guardians” and Harry and Lucy Concluded. This Palgrave Pivot offers new readings of Maria Edgeworth’s representations of slavery. It shows how Edgeworth employed satiric technique and intertextual allusion to represent discourses of slavery and abolition as a litmus test of character – one that she invites readers to use on themselves. Over the course of her career, Edgeworth repeatedly indicted hypocritical and hyperbolic misappropriation of the sentimental rhetoric that dominated the slavery debate. This book offers new readings of canonical Edgeworth texts as well as of largely neglected works, including: Whim for Whim, “The Good Aunt”, Belinda, “The Grateful Negro”, “The Two Guardians”, and Harry and Lucy Continued. It also offers an unprecedented deep-dive into an important Romantic Era woman writer’s engagement with discourses of slavery and abolition. Robin Runia is Associate Professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana, USA. She has published numerous articles and chapters exploring gender and race in the literature of the long eighteenth century. .

Vorwort -- Abbildungsverzeichnis -- 1. Vorbemerkungen -- 2. Die Gattung ‚Märchen‘ und ihre Erforschung -- 3. Die Kinder- und Hausmärchen als ‚Palimpseste‘: Formen der Entstehungs- und Transformationsgeschichte -- 4. Märchen als Literatur aus Literatur -- 5. Nachbemerkungen -- Literaturverzeichnis.

    1. Introduction -- 2. Early Life and and Formative Years -- 3. War and Postwar Experience -- 4. Fame: The Nemuri Kyōshirō Phenomenon -- 5. Shibata Renzaburō's Other Works -- 6. Conclusion. Shibata Renzaburō and the Reinvention of Modernism in Postwar Japanese Popular Literature explores the life and work of Shibata Renzaburō (柴田錬三郎, 1917–1978), the author of adventure and historical novels who was instrumental in reinvigorating popular Japanese literature in the postwar period. This book considers postwar Japanese society through the prism of Shibata’s writing, exploring how the postwar period under SCAP Occupation influenced Shibata’s writing and generated the extraordinary popularity of samurai fiction in the postwar era at large. Through the use of a nihilistic warrior, Nemuri Kyōshirō, and other samurai characters, Shibata Renzaburō addresses important social issues of the day, such as the trauma of defeat, postwar reconstruction, and the attending societal ills and neuroses, while keeping his literature entertaining and easy to read, which ensured its mass appeal in postwar Japan.

This volume deals with different attempts undertaken during the Italian Renaissance to define the nature of the 'lyrical' and of individual lyrical forms (including sonnets, epigrams, canzone, ballads, madrigals, and elegies). It begins with an introductory outline of the fundamental dilemma of the era, when an attempt was made to transform the diverse traditions of lyrical writing and the various theoretical options in the literary theory of the cinquecento into a coherent system of poetics. Subsequently, the first main chapter details the different systematic approaches, influenced predominantly by a reading of Aristotelian poetics, attempted by G.G. Trissino, I.C. Scaliger, A.S. Minturno, P. Torellis, and T. Tasso. The second main chapter provides an extensive analysis of contemporary theories about the specific lyrical forms listed above. Overall, this study reveals that lyrical theory in the cinquecento remained a precarious territory: a unitary theory of poetics does not emerge, but instead, we must accept a plurality of possible proposals for a lyrical theory. "Classrooms and curricula should be structured to foster the playful interaction that can teach students how to negotiate social and political differences in an emancipatory, noncoercive manner.... Teaching reading as a playful exercise of reciprocity with otherness can help prepare students for a democracy understood as a community of communities."-from the "Pedagogical Postscript"Reading is socially useful, in Paul B. Armstrong's view, and can model democratic interaction by a community unconstrained by the need to build consensus but aware of the dangers of violence, irrationality, and anarchy. Reading requires mutual recognition but need not culminate in agreement, Armstrong says; instead, the social potential of reading arises from the active exchange of attitudes, ideas, and values between author and reader and among readers. Play and the Politics of Reading, which has important implications for education, draws on Wolfgang Iser's notion of free play to offer a valuable response to social problems.Armstrong finds that Joseph Conrad, E. M. Forster, Henry James, and James Joyce provide apt examples of the politics of reading, for reasons both literary and political. In making the transition from realism to modernism, these authors experimented with narrative strategies that seek simultaneously to represent the world and to question the means of representation itself. The formal ambiguities and complexities of such texts as Howards End and Ulysses are ways of staging for the reader the difficulties and opportunities of a world of differences. Innovative formal structures challenge readers to reconsider their assumptions and beliefs about social issues.

She has published numerous articles and chapters exploring gender and race in the literature of the long eighteenth century. .
