    Die vielen Figuren deutscher oder deutschsprachiger Herkunft in Roberto Bolaños Gesamtwerk lassen sich ebenso wenig übersehen wie explizite Verweise auf die deutsche Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte. Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen daher Fragen nach intertextuellen Bezügen zwischen seinem Werk und der deutschsprachigen Literatur und Geschichte, nach der Rezeption seiner Texte und der Auseinandersetzung mit seiner Person durch den deutschsprachigen Kultur- und Literaturbetrieb sowie nach dem auf den deutschsprachigen Kontext bezogenen »Inventar« seiner Texte (Orte, Räume, Figuren, Motive). Die Beiträger*innen liefern damit einen ersten deutschsprachige Sammelband zu dem chilenischen Schriftsteller und dessen besonderem Deutsch-Bezug

    Main description: Although fictional characters have long dominated the reception of literature, films, television programs, comics, and other media products, only recently have they begun to attract their due attention in literary and media theory. The book systematically surveys today's diverse and at times conflicting theoretical perspectives on fictional character, spanning research on topics such as the differences between fictional characters and real persons, the ontological status of characters, the strategies of their representation and characterization, the psychology of their reception, as well as their specific forms and constellations in - and across - different media, from the book to the internet

    Main description: Trotz ihrer Dominanz für die Rezeption von Literatur, Film, Comic und anderen Medien haben Figuren in der literatur- und medientheoretischen Diskussion lange Zeit ein Schattendasein geführt. Der vorliegende Band führt die inzwischen deutlich intensivierte Diskussion in den verschiedenen Bereichen erstmals zusammen und behandelt systematisch die unterschiedlichen Problemaspekte des Begriffs Figur, z.B. das Verhältnis von Figuren- zur Personenwahrnehmung, den ontologischen Status der Figur, die Strategien der Charakterisierung, Figurenkonstellationen.     There has never been an accurate, comprehensive account of the origin, development, and significance of Balzac's use of recurring characters in the many volumes of the Comedie humaine, although the device is well recognized and such a study has long been deemed essential by Balzac scholars. One cannot read far in the Comedie without encountering characters whom one has met in other novels. Balzac did not introduce recurring characters until after he had written thirty of forty stories, but he kept revising his work from one printing or edition to the next so that earlier stories have as many of the recurring characters as the later ones. Professor Pugh traces the use of the device and unravels its complexities over the whole of Balzac's career by providing a year-by-year account of the author's struggles between 1829 and 1847 to unify his fictional world of some 3,000 characters. This study illuminates the genesis of several novels and sheds totally new light on the validity of the device, by enabling us for the first time to distinguish between examples which belong to the original creative urge, and those introduced during later revisions. The book takes into account the most recent studies of individual Balzac novels, and is unique in the range and thoroughness of its investigation. All serious students of Balzac will need to consult this reference work

    Chaucer introduces the characters of the Knight and the Prioress in the General Prologue to The Canterbury Tales. Beginning with these familiar figures, Elizabeth Fowler develops a new method of analyzing literary character. She argues that words generate human figures in our reading minds by reference to paradigmatic cultural models of the person. These models-such as the pilgrim, the conqueror, the maid, the narrator-originate in a variety of cultural spheres. A concept Fowler terms the "social person" is the key to understanding both the literary details of specific characterizations and their indebtedness to history and culture.Drawing on central texts of medieval and early modern England, Fowler demonstrates that literary characters are created by assembling social persons from throughout culture. Her perspective allows her to offer strikingly original readings of works by Chaucer, Langland, Skelton, and Spenser, and to reformulate and resolve several classic interpretive problems. In so doing, she reframes accepted notions of the process and the consequences of reading.Developing insights from law, theology, economic thought, and political philosophy, Fowler's book replaces the traditional view of characters as autonomous individuals with an interpretive approach in which each character is seen as a battle of many archetypes. According to Fowler, the social person provides the template that enables authors to portray, and readers to recognize, the highly complex human figures that literature requires

    In Paper Monsters, Samuel Fallon charts the striking rise, at the turn to the seventeenth century, of a new species of textual being: the serial, semifictional persona. When Thomas Nashe introduced his charismatic alter ego Pierce Penilesse in a 1592 text, he described the figure as a "paper monster," not fashioned but "begotten" into something curiously like life. The next decade bore this description out, as Pierce took on a life of his own, inspiring other writers to insert him into their own works. And Pierce was hardly alone: such figures as the polemicist Martin Marprelate, the lovers Philisides and Astrophil, the shepherd-laureate Colin Clout, the prodigal wit Euphues, and, in an odd twist, the historical author Robert Greene all outgrew their fictional origins, moving from text to text and author to author, purporting to speak their own words, even surviving their creators' deaths, and installing themselves in the process as agents at large in the real world of writing, publication, and reception.In seeking to understand these "paper monsters" as a historically specific and rather short-lived phenomenon, Fallon looks to the rapid expansion of the London book trade in the years of their ascendancy. Personae were products of print, the medium that rendered them portable, free-floating figures. But they were also the central fictions of a burgeoning literary field: they embodied that field's negotiations between manuscript and print, and they forged a new form of public, textual selfhood. Sustained by the appropriative rewritings they inspired, personae came to seem like autonomous citizens of the literary public. Fallon argues that their status as collective fictions, passed among writers, publishers, and readers, positioned personae as the animating figures of what we have come to call "print culture."
