John of Rupescissa is one of the most important alchemical and prophetic authors of the fourteenth century. Several of his prophetic-exegetical works about the antichrist(s) have recently benefitted from critical editions; however, his two alchemical works have not received the same treatment. John’s Liber lucis magisterii magni (1354) was published twice in the sixteenth century, in 1561 and 1579. Strikingly, the two editions share hardly a single sentence in common. This paper explains this curious anomaly by identifying the origins and lines of descent of both editions, with special attention paid to the 1579 edition, for which Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica MS M 338 provides the crucial link. This study reveals the twisted pathways and unexpected corruptions that a medieval alchemical text can undergo between composition and publication, and serves as a warning against relying too much upon early modern print editions.
