    "Leonardo da Vinci, dé belichaming van het Renaissance-ideaal van de homo universalis, was in zijn eigen tijd het meest beroemd om zijn ongekende gave menselijke emoties en karakters overtuigend uit te beelden. 'Het laatste avondmaal' in Milaan is daar het sprekende voorbeeld van. Dit kunstwerk kan uiteraard niet reizen, maar zal op bijzondere wijze (en op ware grootte) tóch in de tentoonstelling aanwezig zijn. De expressiviteit van het menselijk gelaat, van misvormd en lelijk tot mooi en geïdealiseerd, had Leonardo's grote belangstelling. En dan speciaal de relatie tussen uiterlijk en innerlijk. Hij had duidelijk affiniteit met de toentertijd populaire 'wetenschap' van de fysionomie, waarin gesteld werd dat aan het uiterlijk van de mens diens persoonlijkheid is af te lezen. Het is mede daarom dat hij 'als eerste in zijn tijd' mensen op straat met een ongewoon of mismaakt gezicht bestudeerde en vervolgens tekende. Een van de topstukken in de expositie (tevens gebruikt voor het omslag van het boek) is de 'Studie van het gezicht van een jonge vrouw', ook wel de Mona Lisa onder de tekeningen genoemd. Een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe Leonardo menselijke emoties wist vast te leggen in zijn werken. Het is de eerste keer dat dit werk in Nederland te zien is.
