Based on fresh research into southern magazines and newspapers, this book seeks to shift scholarly attention away from novelists and toward the rich and diverse periodical culture of the South between 1820 and 1900. Magazines were of central importance to the literary culture of the South because the region lacked the publishing centers that could produce large numbers of books. Easily portable, newspapers and magazines could be sent through the increasingly sophisticated postal system for relatively low subscription rates. The mix of content, from poetry to short fiction and literary reviews to practical advice and political news, meant that periodicals held broad appeal. As editors, contributors, correspondents, and reporters in the nineteenth century, southern women entered traditionally male bastions when they embarked on careers in journalism.     Publishing for children between 1930 and 1960 has been denigrated as a relatively fallow period for creativity and quality, certainly in comparison with the golden ages' of children's literature that preceded and succeeded it. This book questions this perception by using archival evidence to argue that the work of what was predominantly a female group of editors, illustrators, authors and librarians (collectively referred to as bookwomen) resulted in many titles which are still considered as classics' today. The bookwomen reframed ideas about how children's publishing should be approached and valued and, in doing so, laid the foundations for a subsequent generation of children's authors and publishers who were to achieve far greater prominence. The key to the success of the bookwomen was their willingness to experiment, the strength of their relationships and their comprehensive understanding of the book production process. By focusing on a selection of women working across all aspects of the book production process, this book demonstrates that, both individually and collectively, women capitalised on their position as other' to the existing male institutions

    Wie könnte das Alltagsleben in der DDR plastischer und spannender vermittelt werden als anhand einer Biographie, als über die konkrete Erzählung einer Lebensgeschichte? Renate Böning erzählt von ihrem Leben in drei unterschiedlichen historischen Perioden: ihrer Kindheit und Jugend im Nationalsozialismus, ihrer Erwachsenenzeit und ihrem Arbeitsleben in der DDR sowie ihrem Ruhestand im wiedervereinigten Deutschland. Die Aufzeichnungen bieten eine wertvolle Grundlage für sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen über das Leben in Deutschland, insbesondere in der DDR. Die Veröffentlichung basiert auf Interviews, die Anfang der 1990er Jahre und 2012/13 geführt wurden, sowie auf eigenen schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen von Renate Böning. In den Gesprächen und Aufzeichnungen wird Zeitgeschichte aus der Mitte der Gesellschaft heraus sichtbar gemacht Renate Böning, geboren 1935, hat drei verschiedene politische Systeme und die wechselvolle Geschichte Deutschlands der letzten 80 Jahre miterlebt; mehr als 40 Jahre davon verbrachte sie in der ehemaligen DDR. In ihren autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen liefert sie interessante Einblicke in das Alltagsleben in der DDR. Die Veröffentlichung basiert auf Interviews, die Anfang der 1990er Jahre und 2012/13 geführt wurden, sowie auf eigenen schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen von Renate Böning. Renate Böning zählte nicht zu den UnterstützerInnen des Systems, leistete aber auch keinen aktiven Widerstand. Auch wenn sie sich nicht immer angepasst verhielt, musste sie nicht unter schweren Sanktionen leiden. Sie ist und war eine Befürworterin der Wiedervereinigung, auch wenn diese nicht in jeder Hinsicht ein Gewinn für sie war. In ihren Aufzeichnungen wird Zeitgeschichte aus der Mitte der Gesellschaft heraus sichtbar gemacht. Als Berater und Beraterin hilft die Lektüre zu verstehen, wie Kindheit und Jugend das ganze Leben prägen und was es für Menschen bedeuten kann, ein Gegenüber zu haben, bei dem sie ihre Geschichte validieren können. Menschen, die unter ähnlichen Umstehenden aufgewachsen sind hilft es, die eigene Geschichte sich wieder bewusst zu machen und ggf. aufzuarbeiten, um sich dann damit zu versöhnen.     Slovenska urednica, pisateljica in prevajalka Kristina Brenkova (1911-2009) se je v založbi Mladinska knjiga zaposlila leta 1949, kjer je delala do upokojitve. Prevzela je urednikovanje otroške literature, vse od začetka je bil njen cilj ponuditi otrokom nadpovprečne slikanice, ki so jih ustvarjali naši najboljši ilustratorji in pisatelji, znala je izbrati tudi najkvalitetnejša dela iz svetovne zakladnice. Polna drznih idej in sodobnih pogledov (doktorirala je iz psihologije) je navdihovala ustvarjalce ter z njimi tkala omikane, prisrčne vezi, kar v Sloveniji po drugi svetovni vojni ni bilo ravno v navadi. Pričujoča monografija, ki je izšla ob 110. obletnici Kristininega rojstva, s prispevki mnogih eminentnih imen slovenske literature in ilustracije, s katerimi je Brenkova sodelovala , zaobjame ne le odličnost in pomembnost njenega dela, njene značajske lastnosti, pač pa tudi ambivalentnost tistega časa, v katerem ni bilo lahko balansirati. Knjiga vsebuje fotografije iz življenja urednice, slikanic, ki so se duš malih bralcev pionirčkov tako dotaknile, korespondenco, ki jo je Kristina vodila z ustvarjalci, ki so jo cenili.     The first study to focus on white and black women journalists and writers both before and after the Civil War, this book offers fresh insight into Southern intellectual life, the fight for women's rights and gender ideology. Based on new research into Southern magazines and newspapers, this book seeks to shift scholarly attention away from novelists and toward the rich and diverse periodical culture of the South between 1820 and 1900. Magazines were of central importance to the literary culture of the South because the region lacked the publishing centers that could produce large numbers of books. As editors, contributors, correspondents and reporters in the nineteenth century, Southern women entered traditionally male bastions when they embarked on careers in journalism. In so doing, they opened the door to calls for greater political and social equality at the turn of the twentieth century

    Slovenska urednica, pisateljica in prevajalka Kristina Brenkova (1911-2009) se je v založbi Mladinska knjiga zaposlila leta 1949, kjer je delala do upokojitve. Prevzela je urednikovanje otroške literature, vse od začetka je bil njen cilj ponuditi otrokom nadpovprečne slikanice, ki so jih ustvarjali naši najboljši ilustratorji in pisatelji, znala je izbrati tudi najkvalitetnejša dela iz svetovne zakladnice. Polna drznih idej in sodobnih pogledov (doktorirala je iz psihologije) je navdihovala ustvarjalce ter z njimi tkala omikane, prisrčne vezi, kar v Sloveniji po drugi svetovni vojni ni bilo ravno v navadi.
