This study examines the theory of the novel and the conceptualisation of gender as having been inextricably intertwined since the inception of the former and the rise of modernity. Authors of these theories sought to address not only the relatively young genre of the novel, but also the category of masculinity: theories of the novel became theories of gender. Through an analysis of relevant theories of the novel, from Huet and Blanckenburg via F. Schlegel and Hegel to Vischer and Lukács, this study traces the efforts made in the texts to mutually stabilise masculinity and the novel. This attempt at mutual stability opens points of rupture, revealing the vulnerable achievements of masculinity and the novel.

    Die Debatte um die Frage nach dem Lebenswissen hat weiter an Fahrt aufgenommen, seitdem der Begriff im Jahr 2007 von Ottmar Ette in die kulturwissenschaftliche Diskussion eingeführt wurde. Die im vorliegenden Band versammelten Beiträge versuchen, diese Diskussion entscheidend voranzutreiben und neue Horizonte aktuellen wie künftigen literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Denkens und Handelns aufzuzeigen. Der Band geht auf ein internationales Symposium zurück, das im Juli 2010 am Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies stattfand. Der Stil wissenschaftlicher Konvivenz, der bei diesem Symposium geschaffen wurde, kommt in allen hier versammelten Texten zum Ausdruck. Europäische wie außereuropäische, philologische wie philosophische, fachgeschichtliche wie medienhistorische, erzähltheoretische wie literarästhetische, transkulturelle wie transdisziplinäre Ansätze messen die Dimensionen eines Forschungsgebietes aus, dessen Wissensformen und Wissensnormen es selbst noch näher zu bestimmen gilt.     Der vorliegende Band geht von der These aus, daß Globalisierung kein rezentes Phänomen, sondern ein langanhaltender, sich über mehrere Jahrhunderte erstreckender Prozeß ist, der sich in vier Phasen beschleunigter Globalisierung unterteilen läßt und die Frühe Neuzeit der europäischen Geschichtsschreibung über die weltweit unterschiedlich divergierenden Modernen mit unserer Gegenwart in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 21. Jahrhunderts verbindet.Wir sollten gewiß nicht damit aufhören, die Phänomene der Globalisierung aus dem Blickwinkel der Ökonomie oder der Politik, des Finanzwesens oder der Rechtsprechung, der Medizin, der Geschichte oder der Geographie zu betrachten; aber wir sollten uns der Tatsache bewußt werden, daß diese Perspektiven uns stets nur mehr oder minder begrenzte Ausschnitte und Ausblicke liefern, während uns die Literaturen der Welt ein Komplexität nicht reduzierendes und Widersprüchlichkeit nicht ausblendendes sinnliches Denken und Erleben dessen ermöglichen, was das nur von vielen Logiken her zu verstehende Leben unseres Planeten und auf unserem Planeten ausmacht. Das Wissen der Literatur ist durch kein anderes ersetzbar: Es ist Wissen des Lebens vom Leben im Leben

    Die Studie analysiert die Verbindungen, die Theorien des Romans mit Konzeptualisierungen von Geschlecht seit den Anfängen der literarischen Moderne eingegangen sind. Die untersuchten Texte erfassen nicht nur die relativ junge Gattung des Romans; denn indem sie Geschlechterimagines für ihre Zwecke operationalisieren, bringen sie zugleich die Kategorie der Männlichkeit hervor: Romantheorien sind Geschlechtertheorien. Indem die Studie einschlägige Romantheorien von Huet und Blanckenburg über F. Schlegel und Hegel bis Vischer und Lukács in den Blick nimmt, geht sie dem Aufwand nach, der in den Texten betrieben wird, um Roman und Männlichkeit gegenseitig zu stabilisieren – und zeigt, wie fragil Männlichkeit auch an und in Romantheorien arbeitet. This study examines the theory of the novel and the conceptualisation of gender as having been inextricably intertwined since the inception of the former and the rise of modernity. Authors of these theories sought to address not only the relatively young genre of the novel, but also the category of masculinity: theories of the novel became theories of gender. Through an analysis of relevant theories of the novel, from Huet and Blanckenburg via F. Schlegel and Hegel to Vischer and Lukács, this study traces the efforts made in the texts to mutually stabilise masculinity and the novel. This attempt at mutual stability opens points of rupture, revealing the vulnerable achievements of masculinity and the novel.

    This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge. Literature is able to offer its readers knowledge through direct participation in the form of step-by-step intellectual and affective experiences. Through this ability, it can reach and affect audiences across great spatial and temporal distances. Literature - what different times and cultures have been able to understand as such in a broad sense - has always been characterized by its transareal and transcultural origins and effects. It is the product of many logics, and it teaches us to think polylogically rather than monologically. Literature is an experiment in living, and living in a state of experimentation. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010)
