    This book, which emerges in the context of the European research network LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence), is concerned with European multilingualism both as a political concept and as a social reality. It features cutting-edge studies by linguists and anthropologists who perceive multilingualism as a discursive phenomenon which can be revealed and analyzed through empirical fieldwork. The book presents a fresh perspective of European multilingualism as it takes the reader through key themes of social consciousness - identity, policy, education, economy - and relevant societal levels of organization (European, national, regional).     As much as scholars of Baltic Studies always claim independence for the languages and literature it involves, it is evident that the Baltic and Slavic languages and literature have been and still are in latent contact and exchange. The historical processes had led to interwoven but distinct cultural spheres `on the border.' Our interdisciplinary collection of essays follows several borderlines: Teresa Dalecka (University of Vilnius) discusses the Polish literature in Lithuania since 1990 and the environment that created it. Stephan Kessler (University of Greifswald) sketches a framework of narration and applies it to a story written by Maks Fraj who lives in Lithuania but is from Odessa by origin. Anna Stankeviča, Inna Dvorecka, and Jekaterina Gusakova (each from the University of Daugavpils) give an overview of Latvia's Russophone book market and analyse Vadim Vernik's formula fiction. Sergei Kruk (Stradiņš University in Rīga) discusses the Latvian concept of linguistic integration that roots in the romantic notions of social homogeneity and language as being a shibboleth for successful integration. Nicole Nau (University of Poznań) highlights four techniques for the integration of Slavic verbs and verbal derivational affixes into Latgalian, based on material from the 19th to the 21st century. Anastasija Kostiučenko (University of Greifswald), investigates how the concept of hybridity can be used to describe and better understand the language area and identity issues in Southeast Lithuania.

    Wohngemeinschaften (WGs) des Studierendenwerks sind – gerade in beliebten Universitätsstädten – Orte, an denen Studierende mit unterschiedlichen sprachlichen Repertoires aufeinandertreffen. Eine solche mehrsprachige Konstellation macht eine Aushandlung im Hinblick darauf erforderlich, welche Sprache(n) zur Gestaltung des Zusammenlebens verwendet werden soll(en). Über diese Aushandlungsprozesse, die wir mit dem Konzept der Language Policy erfassen, ist allerdings bislang wenig bekannt. Im Fokus des vorliegenden Beitrags steht deshalb die Frage, wie die internationalen Studierenden die Language Policies in ihren WGs wahrnehmen und welche Perspektiven sie dabei auf ihre eigene Mehrsprachigkeit einnehmen. Die Datengrundlage bilden zwei Gruppeninterviews, die mithilfe der Positionierungsanalyse ausgewertet werden. In der Analyse zeigen wir, dass das Englische als Lingua franca eine zentrale Rolle einnimmt und wesentlich zur Konstitution der Gruppenidentität beiträgt. Flat-sharing communities – especially in popular university cities – are spaces where students with various linguistic repertoires frequently encounter each other. Such a multilingual constellation requires a joint negotiation in regards to which language(s) will shape the social interactions among residents. To date, little is known about these negotiation processes, which we describe using the concept of language policy. This article focuses on how international students perceive the language policies in their flat-sharing community and which perspectives they take on their own multilingualism. The data is based on two group interviews and evaluated by means of the positioning theory. The analysis shows that English as a lingua franca occupies a central role and significantly contributes to the constitution of a group identity.
