Focusing on an elite group of two dozen Soviet-Jewish photographers, including Arkady Shaykhet, Alexander Grinberg, Mark Markov-Grinberg, Evgenii Khaldei, Dmitrii Baltermants, and Max Alpert, Through Soviet Jewish Eyes presents a different picture. These artists participated in a social project they believed in and with which they were emotionally and intellectually invested-they were charged by the Stalinist state to tell the visual story of the unprecedented horror we now call the Holocaust. These wartime photographers were the first liberators to bear witness with cameras to Nazi atrocities, three years before Americans arrived at Buchenwald and Dachau. In this passionate work, David Shneer tells their stories and highlights their work through their very own images-he has amassed never-before-published photographs from families, collectors, and private archives. Through Soviet Jewish Eyes helps us understand why so many Jews flocked to Soviet photography; what their lives and work looked like during the rise of Stalinism, during and then after the war; and why Jews were the ones charged with documenting the Soviet experiment and then its near destruction at the hands of the Nazis

    Die Studie untersucht anhand literarischer und filmischer Werke der Shoah Zeit- und Raumkonstruktionen in ihrer spezifischen Inszenierung mit Fokus auf den französischsprachigen Raum. Durch die systematische Analyse wird anhand der Gegenüberstellung von narrativ-literarischen und narrativ-kinematographischen Erzählverfahren eine Differenzierung und Definition der Raumarten und Erinnerungsebenen vorgenommen. Daraus resultiert eine komprimierte Darstellung der verschiedenen zusammenspielenden Faktoren innerhalb des Erinnerungsprozesses in Literatur und Film. Untersucht werden die unterschiedlichen Erzähl- und Darstellungstechniken des Erinnerns in Raum und Zeit, (Schreib-)Ort und -Zeitpunkt des Erzählenden, die Motivation des sich Erinnernden und die Thematisierung und Interpretation von unterschiedlichen Orten. Das Werkcorpus konzentriert sich vornehmlich auf folgende Werke: Charlotte Delbos Trilogie Auschwitz et après (1970/71), Soazig Aarons fiktive Tagebucherzählung Le non de Klara (2002), Romain Garys Roman La Danse de Gengis Cohn (1967), Alain Resnais' Dokumentation Nuit et Brouillard (1956) und Liliana Cavanis Spielfilm Il portiere di notte (1973)

    Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbands gehen auf eine im Herbst 2010 durchgeführte Tagung im schlesischen Katowice zurück, auf der vorwiegend polnische und deutsche Literatur- und Filmwissenschaftler sich mit den Zeugnissen der Auseinandersetzung mit Krieg und Holocaust in ihren beiden Ländern beschäftigten. Im Mittelpunkt der Beiträge stehen literarische Texte und Filme aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart. In einigen Fällen bilden unpublizierte Dokumente (z. B. Lagererinnerungen) oder pseudodokumentarische Werke (z. B. NS-Propagandafilme) den Gegenstand. Das Interesse gilt der Erschließung sowohl ganzer Oeuvres (u. a. Hebert Achternbusch, W. G. Sebald) als auch von Einzelwerken (u. a. Thomans Manns "Doktor Faustus", Verfilmung von Heinrich Bölls "Gruppenbild mit Dame") oder allgemeineren thematischen Komplexen (Desertion, Widerstand, Überleben) und gattungsbezogenen Fragestellungen (Feldpost, Kriegsroman, Mythos). Einige Beiträge bieten informative Überblicke etwa über den Nachkriegsfilm in den verschiedenen Besatzungszonen und seine ambivalente Beziehung zur vorangegangenen Filmästhetik oder die Blüte des deutschen Weltkriegsfilms zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Hierher gehört auch die kritische Musterung der frühen DDR-Literatur, die aus ideologischer Präokkupation den Holocaust bis in die 1960er Jahre weitgehend ausblendete, und der Vergleich von Texten deutscher und polnischer Autoren über Besuche in Auschwitz. Nicht zuletzt eröffnen einige Detailstudien neue Perspektiven auf bislang wenig beachtete (literatur-)politische Schlüsselpositionen (Emil Ludwig) oder verdrängte biographische Problemzonen (Hans Egon Holthusen). Ein verbindendes Element ist die Reflexion auf die Darstellbarkeit der historischen Ereignisse, deren extreme Erfahrungen immer auch die Frage nach der Legitimität und Möglichkeit der künstlerischen Gestaltung aufwerfen

Focusing on an elite group of two dozen Soviet-Jewish photographers, including Arkady Shaykhet, Alexander Grinberg, Mark Markov-Grinberg, Evgenii Khaldei, Dmitrii Baltermants, and Max Alpert, Through Soviet Jewish Eyes presents a different picture. These artists participated in a social project they believed in and with which they were emotionally and intellectually invested-they were charged by the Stalinist state to tell the visual story of the unprecedented horror we now call the Holocaust. These wartime photographers were the first liberators to bear witness with cameras to Nazi atrocities, three years before Americans arrived at Buchenwald and Dachau. In this passionate work, David Shneer tells their stories and highlights their work through their very own images-he has amassed never-before-published photographs from families, collectors, and private archives. Through Soviet Jewish Eyes helps us understand why so many Jews flocked to Soviet photography; what their lives and work looked like during the rise of Stalinism, during and then after the war; and why Jews were the ones charged with documenting the Soviet experiment and then its near destruction at the hands of the Nazis

    Die Studie untersucht anhand literarischer und filmischer Werke der Shoah Zeit- und Raumkonstruktionen in ihrer spezifischen Inszenierung mit Fokus auf den französischsprachigen Raum. Durch die systematische Analyse wird anhand der Gegenüberstellung von narrativ-literarischen und narrativ-kinematographischen Erzählverfahren eine Differenzierung und Definition der Raumarten und Erinnerungsebenen vorgenommen. Daraus resultiert eine komprimierte Darstellung der verschiedenen zusammenspielenden Faktoren innerhalb des Erinnerungsprozesses in Literatur und Film. Untersucht werden die unterschiedlichen Erzähl- und Darstellungstechniken des Erinnerns in Raum und Zeit, (Schreib-)Ort und -Zeitpunkt des Erzählenden, die Motivation des sich Erinnernden und die Thematisierung und Interpretation von unterschiedlichen Orten. Das Werkcorpus konzentriert sich vornehmlich auf folgende Werke: Charlotte Delbos Trilogie Auschwitz et après (1970/71), Soazig Aarons fiktive Tagebucherzählung Le non de Klara (2002), Romain Garys Roman La Danse de Gengis Cohn (1967), Alain Resnais' Dokumentation Nuit et Brouillard (1956) und Liliana Cavanis Spielfilm Il portiere di notte (1973)

Nicht zuletzt eröffnen einige Detailstudien neue Perspektiven auf bislang wenig beachtete (literatur-)politische Schlüsselpositionen (Emil Ludwig) oder verdrängte biographische Problemzonen (Hans Egon Holthusen). Ein verbindendes Element ist die Reflexion auf die Darstellbarkeit der historischen Ereignisse, deren extreme Erfahrungen immer auch die Frage nach der Legitimität und Möglichkeit der künstlerischen Gestaltung aufwerfen
