Doch so vertraut die Piraten uns auch scheinen, so widersprüchlich und schillernd sind die Freibeuter der Meere bei näherer Betrachtung. Sind sie Helden der Freiheit oder organisierte Kriminelle? Rächer der Entrechteten oder mörderische Agenten imperialer Großmächte? Räuber zur See oder Entrepreneure mit politischem Gestaltungsanspruch? Die Beiträge dieses Bandes beschränken sich nicht nur auf die Geschichte der Seeräuber von der Antike bis heute, sondern nehmen auch die literarische, mythologische und filmische Bearbeitung der Piraterie in den Blick. Sie achten zudem auf den Rollenwechsel der Seeräuber – zwischen Held und Pirat in der Odyssee, zwischen Pirat und Söldner in Byzanz oder Venedig, zwischen Kaperfahrer mit staatlicher Erlaubnis und freiem Pirat in der frühneuzeitlichen Karibik.

Straddling traditionalism and modernism, Disney productions have proven adaptable to social discourses and technical and media developments throughout its history. This volume brings together scholars from several European countries to explore various dimensions that constitute ‘Disney.’ In line with current media and cultural studies research, the chapters deal with human-human and human-animal relations, gender and diversity, iconic characters and narratives, Disney’s contribution to cultural and visual heritage, and transmedial and transfictional spaces of experience and practices of participation associated with Disney story worlds.
