    In 1921, Miguel Asín Palacios published a pioneering book, The Islamic Eschatology in the Divine Comedy, in which he argued that Dante’s poem, the summa of Christian Middle Ages, had to be read on the backdrop of Islamic lore. The idea that the ‘Tuscan afterworld’ could have Quranic sources triggered one of the most heated literary debates of the 20th century, with both sides evincing nationalistic and cultural biases. The first section of the book analyzes this contentious episode of literary criticism from a historical standpoint: the post-WW2 decolonization period and the emergence of the Mediterranean as an hermeneutical framework of interpretation. It focuses on the multifaceted biography of Enrico Cerulli (1898–1988), a governor of Italian colonies and a scholar of Somali and Ethiopian studies, whose philological works are landmarks of the debate on Dante and Islam. The second part of the monograph presents some novel lines of inquiry on the reception, interpretation, and appropriation of the Comedy in the early-modern period. In this context, surprising intersections with Islamic sources materialize. The overarching goal of the book is to test the Mediterranean as a productive concept in the interpretation of Dante's work.

Welche Wirkung entfalten literarische oder filmische Hybride aus Fiktion und Dokumentar, Journalismus, Reportage, Sachtext? Welche Funktion erfüllen Intertextualität, Inter- und Transmedialität im Rahmen realistischen Schreibens? Gibt es Formen der "Ich-Erzählung", die als Authentizitätsmarker fungieren? Handelt es sich um eine Wiederaufnahme älterer Realismen oder entsteht etwas völlig Neues?The contributions of this anthology deal with realistic works of the past 25 years in Romance literature, film and series, with a focus on content-related and formal aspects that are based on the following questions: To what extent are the narratives engaged? Can an educational and didactic gesture be recognized? Which narrative instruments do the works use to convey authenticity? What effect do literary or cinematic hybrids of fiction and documentary, journalism, reportage, non-fiction have? What function do intertextuality, inter- and transmediality fulfill in the context of realistic writing? To what extent can the subject be rehabilitated? Are there (old and new) forms of "first-person narration" that act as markers of authenticity (writing between autobiography and autofiction, diary, etc.)? Can a paradigm shift be identified? Is it a resumption of older realisms or is something completely new emerging? Are there epoch-spanning characteristics of realistic writing?

    Realistische Schreib- und Darstellungsweisen der europäischen Avantgarden des ausgehenden 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts haben in der Nachkriegszeit eine neue Konjunktur erlebt.Die Beiträge dieses Bandes führen zentrale Fragestellungen der gegenwärtigen Realismusforschung fort, indem sie die spezifische Ausrichtung von Realismuskonzepten der Nachkriegsjahre im Film, aber auch deren Bedeutung für Poetiken und Poetologien nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in den Blick nehmen. Bisher wenig beachtete internationale und intermediale Verflechtungen zwischen filmästhetischen und literarischen Konzepten des italienischen Neorealismus (1943 bis etwa 1954), deutschsprachiger Nachkriegsliteratur und neorealistischer Theoriebildung werden hier erstmals erschlossen.Film-, Literatur- und Geschichtsinteressierten bietet der Band zudem einen breiten Überblick über die internationale Medienlandschaft der Nachkriegszeit

    In den ersten Dekaden des 20. Jahrhunderts sind Macht- und Körperinszenierungen zu beobachten, die - vor allem in Italien und von Italien ausgehend - für die Kultur- und Mediengeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts relevant sind. Im Übergang von der ästhetizistischen Moderne zum italienischen Futurismus werden Konzepte reflektiert und Inszenierungen experimentell durchgespielt, die wichtige Impulse für nachfolgende anthropologische Fragestellungen und ästhetische Strömungen im europäischen (und nicht zuletzt im globalen) Kontext geben. Vor allem das Faszinationsmuster Bewegung (Geschwindigkeit, Athletismus, Masse) initiierte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts unter dem Eindruck der technischen Medien eine Konkurrenz und Konvergenz von Künsten und Wissenschaften und führte zur Neucodierung wesentlicher Parameter unserer Kultur (Bewusstsein, Imaginäres, Identität, Gedächtnis).Das im Umfeld der frühen Avantgarden intellektuell und ästhetisch dichte Wechselverhältnis von Literatur, Philosophie, Künsten, Medien und Wissenschaften wird in diesem Band aus der Perspektive neuerer kulturwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen (Performativität, Inszenierung, Intermedialität, Materialität) beleuchtet und im Horizont neuer Suchbegriffe (Form, Formauflösung, Intensität) erforscht

    Dieses Buch stellt erstmalig das Werk des italienischen Schriftstellers Paolo Volponi in seinem gesamten Umfang auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt vor.     Realismusdebatten und literarische Strömungen der italienischen Nachkriegsliteratur legen meist eine Überlappung von außersprachlicher Realität und deren Darstellung im Medium des Romans zugrunde. Einige Literaturschaffende entziehen sich dieser Tradition jedoch, indem sie sich auf ästhetische, politische und explizit an ein neues soziopolitisches Paradigma der Nachkriegszeit geknüpfte Gesichtspunkte beziehen. Britta Köhler-Hoff legt dar, wie dabei nicht nur die Abbildbarkeit der Wirklichkeit durch Literatur infrage gestellt wird, sondern auch - teilweise im Rahmen eigener Theoriebildung - abweichende und engagierte literarische Wirklichkeitskonzeptionen entstehen.
