As humans re-negotiate their boundaries with the nonhuman world of animals, inanimate entities and technological artefacts, new identities are formed and anew epistemological and ethical approach to reality is needed. Through twelvethought-provoking, scholarly essays, this volume analyzes works by a range ofmodern and contemporary Italian authors, from Giacomo Leopardi to ElenaFerrante, who have captured the shift from anthropocentrism and postmodernismto posthumanism. Indeed, this is the first academic volume investigating narrativeconfigurations of posthuman identity in Italian literature and film.

The contributorsto Posthumanism in Italian Literature and Film: Boundaries and Identity show howthe culture that gave the world modern European humanism has also producedsome of the most radical and searching critiques of what it is to be human in themodern and late modern age.’— Michael Cronin, Professor of French, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, andauthor of Eco-translation (2017)‘Brilliantly edited by Enrica Maria Ferrara, Posthumanism in Italian Literature andFilm expands the canon of posthumanist literary studies, enriching it withunexpected topics and voices. In a dazzling sequence of chapters on Leopardi,Pirandello, Elena Ferrante, Gianni Celati, Michelangelo Antonioni, and a numberof contemporary storytellers and filmmakers, the authors of this fascinating bookfollow the human as it emerges from a tangle of organic and inorganic substances,DNA and energy sources, mobile phones and microbes, technology and politics. An engaging read, it is yet another testimony to the established presence ofItalian culture on the scene of posthumanities.’— Serenella Iovino, Professor of Italian Studies and Environmental Humanities,University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USAAs humans re-negotiate their boundaries with the nonhuman world of animals, inanimate entities and technological artefacts, new identities are formed and anew epistemological and ethical approach to reality is needed. QUEER(ING) GENDER IN ITALIAN WOMEN’S WRITING is the first study of its kind to systematically use queer theory as a theoretical framework of analysis of Italian women’s writing. Focusing especially on the writers Dacia Maraini, Goliarda Sapienza and Elsa Morante, and delimiting the field of enquiry to works written in the 1970s and 1980s, the book positions its chosen texts in their historical and cultural backdrop and illustrates the ways in which the authors responded in highly original ways to the debates of the day in matters of gender and sexuality, bringing them close to current «queer» formulations. Judith Butler is a key interlocutor here, as in the few existing critical contributions offering a «queer» reading of texts from the Italian literary tradition, but rather than rely predominantly on her theorisation of the performative quality of gender, this book incorporates additional concepts that are key to Butler’s notion of queer, such as «parody», «citationality», «drag» and «undoing gender». It further seeks to enrich existing critical debates on Italian women’s writing, and on Maraini, Sapienza and Morante in particular, by considering them in relation to other influential queer theorists – including Teresa de Lauretis, Jack Halberstam, Lee Edelman, Sara Ahmed and (the author’s queer reading of) Julia Kristeva – in the belief that the plurality intrinsic to the formulation of «queer» is crucial for its potential as a tool for critical inquiry.

A gripping essay on the role that Italian intellectuals played in the organization and scheduling of Swiss public radio between the Fascist period and the so-called Anni di Piombo (Years of Lead). The book

What was the role of Italian intellectuals in the history of Swiss radio broadcasting culture? And what images of Switzerland and Italy were conveyed between 1930 and 1980?

Ever since it began in the 1930s, Italian-language Swiss radio, a national public service broadcaster addressed to a linguistic minority, drew from intellectual resources external to its own political borders, a characteristic that contributed to defining its profile. During the Fascist period, for example, Italian intellectuals could express themselves from the microphones of this radio with a freedom that they were not allowed in their home country: Benedetto Croce’s 1936 speech is a memorable case in point. Subse-quently, when the interview and debate formats tended to undermine that of the radio lecture, journalists and writers such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Eugenio Montale took advantage of the debating space that Swiss Italy offered them.

By analysing the written and audio sources, many of which unpublished, Nelly Valsangiacomo’s essay reconstructs a complex as well as fascinating radio broadcasting panorama, brought to life by the voices of some of the greatest Italian intellectuals, such as Elio Vittorini, Maria Corti, Indro Montanelli, and Dario Fo. Voices that can now be listened to once again thanks to a web page completing the book: www.rsi.ch/dietroalmicrofono (Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana/Italian-language Swiss Radio and Television) Qual è stato il ruolo degli intellettuali italiani nella storia della cultura radiofonica svizzera?

A reasonable evolution model is indispensable for the comprehensibility and justification of translation policy decisions. On the one hand, this model should take into account the general objectives of protecting a regional or minority language and, on the other, the findings of translation studies and the best practices of the translation industry. On the basis of these assumptions, the author derives possible lines of development for the various areas of translation policy with the help of the maturity model derived from organisational management. He also develops a comprehensive evaluation procedure: the Translation Policy Metrics Model (TPM). The exemplary implementation of this model is based on the example of the minority region of South Tyrol using two surveys, several personal interviews with leading personalities in the field of translation as well as by examining the existing sources of legislation. Peter Sandrini is a research assistant at the Institute for Translation Studies at the University of Innsbruck. His research focuses on legal translation, translation technology and terminology (www.petersandrini.net).

This volume, part of the Lectura Bocacccii series organized by the American Boccaccio Association, offers close readings by top scholars of Day Four of the Decameron. As fans of the Decameron know, the Fourth Day opens with an important intervention in which the author defends his project against his critics, which coincides with a significant change in tone as the subject matter turns to stories with unhappy endings. The contributors approach the stories from a variety of perspectives, including the linguistic, philosophical, anthropological, and literary historical. These fresh readings of stories that are nearly seven hundred years old testify to the enduring power of Boccaccio's masterpiece to speak to new audiences and to find compelling relevance even at a great distance from its immediate medieval context

Trissino, J.C. Scaliger, A.S.
