    Spiritual Grammar identifies a genre of religious literature that until now has not been recognized as such. In this surprising and theoretically nuanced study, F. Dominic Longo reveals how grammatical structures of language addressed in two medieval texts published nearly four centuries apart, from distinct religious traditions, offer a metaphor for how the self is embedded in spiritual reality. Reading The Grammar of Hearts (Nahw al-qulūb) by the great Sufi shaykh and Islamic scholar 'Abd al-Karīm al-Qushayrī (d. 1074) and Moralized Grammar (Donatus moralizatus) by Christian theologian Jean Gerson (d. 1429), Longo reveals how both authors use the rules of language and syntax to advance their pastoral goals. Indeed, grammar provides the two masters with a fresh way of explaining spiritual reality to their pupils and to discipline the souls of their readers in the hopes that their writings would make others adept in the grammar of the heart

    Die dialogische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Koran als Zugang zur Transzendenz ist elementares Erinnern. Themenfelder wie Offenbarungs- und Schriftverständnis, Geschlechtergerechtigkeit oder Anthropologie werden exegetisch, textkritisch und religionsgeschichtlich untersucht und normative theologische Diskurse kritisch reflektiert. Dabei sind Subjektorientierung und Kontextbezogenheit Kriterien der Untersuchungen. Religionspädagogische, vortheologische und humanwissenschaftliche Rezeptionen, Empirie und Unterrichtserfahrungen münden in konkrete didaktische Überlegungen. So setzt die Arbeit Wegmarken in der islamischen Religionspädagogik, legt Grundsteine zur wissenschaftlichen Weiterführung und für transreligiöse Studien. A dialogical examination of the Qur'an as an approach to transcendence is elementary remembering. This book examines topics such as understanding revelation and scripture, gender justice or anthropology exegetically and from the perspectives of textual criticism and the history of religion, and reflects on normative theological discourses critically. Subject orientation and contextuality are the criteria for the author’s investigations. Religious education, pre-theological and human science receptions, empiricism and teaching experiences lead to concrete didactic considerations. In this way, the work sets milestones in Islamic religious education and lays the foundations for further academic research and transreligious studies.

    In this volume the history of Islamic sects is analysed as a literary genus in its own right. It consists of three sections: the first deals with structural constants in the texts such as the arrangement, or the number and classification of the "sects." The main section describes the most important works and authors from the 8th to the 19th century. Finally, the central concepts - "religion," "sects," "orthodoxy," etc. - are considered and the historical background of the literary development examined in more detail.
