    Seit jeher zählt es zu den Gewissheiten des politischen Diskurses, dass die Integration muslimischer Migranten in westliche Gesellschaften durch ihren unterschiedlichen religiösen Hintergrund erschwert oder gar verhindert werde. Die empirische Studie von Halit Öztürk entlarvt diese vermeintliche Gewissheit als Vorurteil und zeigt vielmehr, wie religiöse Partikularität und Differenz den Integrationsprozess sogar befördern, indem die Selbstreflexion der Migranten im Medium des Islam die ideellen Impulse für eine gelingende Sozialität bereitstellt. Diese Publikation gewährt damit auf wissenschaftlicher Basis einen gänzlich anderen Blick auf den Zusammenhang zwischen Islam und Integration. Although studies now acknowledge the complicated mobilizations of honor crime discourses, the ways in which these discourses move across different geographies and contexts remain relatively unexplored.     Explores developments in Arab autobiography over the last 40 yearsThis original exploration of Arab autobiographical discourse investigates various modes of cultural identity which have emerged in Arab societies in the last 40 years. During this period, autobiographical texts moved away from exemplary life narratives and toward more unorthodox techniques such as erotic memoir writing, postmodernist self-fragmentation, cinematographic self-projection and blogging. Valerie Anishchenkova argues that the Arabic autobiographical genre has evolved into a mobile, unrestricted category arming authors with narrative tools to articulate their selfhood.Reading works from Arab nations such as Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Syria and Lebanon, Anishchenkova connects the century's rapid political and ideological developments to increasing autobiographical experimentation in Arabic works.     In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren.In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur.Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.Der Band wird ergänzt durch zwei Interviews mit Ilja Trojanow und Feridun Zaimoglu

Abdulrazzak Patel enhances our understanding of the nahdah and its intellectuals, taking into account important internal factors alongside external forces.Patel explores the key factors that contributed to the rise and development of the nahdah. He introduces the humanist movement of the period that was the driving force behind much of the linguistic, literary and educational activity. Drawing on intellectual history, literary history and postcolonial studies, he argues that the nahdah was the product of native development and foreign assistance and that nahdah reformist thought was hybrid in nature. Overall, this study highlights the complexity of the movement and offers a more pluralist history of the period."

    Examines representations of Gamal Abdel Nasser in Egyptian novels, short stories, autobiographies and filmsThe late President of Egypt, Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), has been represented in many major works of Egyptian literature and film, and continues to have a presence in everyday life and discourse in the country. Omar Khalifah’s analysis of these representations focuses on how the historical character of Nasser has emerged in the Egyptian imaginary. He explores the recurrent images of Nasser in literature and film and shows how Nasser constitutes a perfect site for plural interpretations. He argues that Nasser has become a rhetorical device, a figure of speech, a trope that connotes specific images constantly invoked whenever he is mentioned. In die Untersuchung werden auch Länder einbezogen, in denen ausländische Interventionen einen Regimewechsel einleiteten (Irak, Afghanistan), in denen eine Revolution bereits mehr als ein Jahrzehnt zurückliegt (Indonesien), erfolglos war (Iran) oder gar nicht stattfand, da das Regime bereits demokratisch verfasst ist (Indien)

Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central.     Die Bedeutung des palästinensisch-amerikanischen Kritikers Edward W. Said (1935-2003) für die Zusammenführung vormals disparater kultureller und politischer Debatten ist international längst anerkannt. Erstmals liegt nun eine umfassende Werkeinführung und intellektuelle Biographie in deutscher Sprache vor. Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der arabischen Diskurssituation illustriert die vergleichende Rezeptionsanalyse zudem die cross-kulturelle Wirkung Saids. In vergleichender Perspektive werden seine wechselnden epistemologischen und politischen Verortungen erschlossen. Die in die Studie einbezogenen Stimmen stammen aus der akademischen Kritik und Historiographie, der politischen Theorie, dem journalistischen und kreativen Schreiben sowie aus den audiovisuellen Künsten. Indem hier dezidiert der Frage nachgegangen wird, was tatsächlich geschieht, wenn Saids Kritik über die Grenzen kultureller und sozialer Differenz reist, gelingt es exemplarisch, die emanzipatorischen Potentiale, aber auch die Hindernisse des postkolonialen kritischen Engagements herauszuarbeiten

    In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren.In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur.Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.Der Band wird ergänzt durch zwei Interviews mit Ilja Trojanow und Feridun Zaimoglu

    Die Entstehung der »Islamophobie« wird gemeinhin als Folge des jüngsten radikalen Islamismus gesehen. Demgegenüber belegen kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Analysen, dass antimuslimischer Rassismus bereits lange vorher verbreitet war und in politischen, kulturellen und alltäglichen Diskursen der »westlichen Kultur« verwurzelt ist.Im Unterschied zu interreligiösen Dialogen, die sich bemühen, »das Fremde« zu verstehen und damit der »Islamophobie« begegnen wollen, kehrt dieses Buch die Perspektive um. Der Blick auf »die Anderen« dient als Ausgangspunkt der Betrachtung - nicht, um »das Fremde« zu verstehen, sondern um das »Eigene« reflektieren zu können.Mit Bezug auf postkoloniale und poststrukturalistische Theorien wird die Präsentation »des Islam« als hegemonialer Diskurs analysiert. Demnach ist die Dichotomie zwischen »Islam« und »Westen« eine Konstruktion, die beide essenzialisiert. Sie hat sich historisch entwickelt und transformiert, ihr kommen in politischen Konstellationen unterschiedliche Bedeutungen zu, ihre Facetten sind Teil des kulturellen Wissensbestandes »des Westens« über »den Orient« bzw. »den Islam«. In ihrem Alltag vermitteln sich den Subjekten die Bedingungen und Bedeutungen des »Islamdiskurses« als kulturelle Repräsentationen, die ihnen Sichtweisen und Interpretationen anbieten, nahelegen oder erschweren. In diesem Möglichkeitsraum setzen sich die Subjekte aktiv mit der kulturellen Hegemonie auseinander und positionieren sich darin

The contributions featured in this volume illuminate the connections between academic knowledge and political intervention with a (self-)critical eye.     In Zeiten transkultureller Bewegungen erweist sich die Literatur, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in nationale Grenzen einpassen lässt, als ein zentrales Untersuchungsfeld: Kulturelle Veränderungen, die durch Migration von Menschen, Ideen, Waren und Sprachen entstehen, lassen sich hier auf eine umfassende Weise analysieren.In aktuellen Fallstudien untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes unter anderem kulturelle Grenzziehungen in muslimischen bzw. türkischen Gemeinschaften und setzen sich dabei mit dem neuen »Zwang zur Kultur« auseinander. Daran anschließend wird der Begriff »Weltliteratur« auf seine Brauchbarkeit in diesen Kontexten untersucht, insbesondere im Hinblick auf nicht-europäische, etwa afrikanische Repräsentationsmodelle von Literatur.Einzelanalysen von Filmen und literarischen Texten zeigen, dass die so genannte Migrationsliteratur eine ästhetische Reflexion auf kulturelle Integration einerseits, aber auch auf verschiedene Formen von sozialer, individueller und sprachlicher Desintegration andererseits ist.Der Band wird ergänzt durch zwei Interviews mit Ilja Trojanow und Feridun Zaimoglu

Sie zeigt, dass die Begründungsmuster entgegen gängiger Vermutungen nicht die Ursache für die Konversion abbilden, sondern vielmehr von den aktiven islamischen Missionsbewegungen beeinflusst sind. Im multireligiösen Ostafrika führt dies dazu, dass das Element der religiösen Abgrenzung eine große Rolle in den Narrativen einnimmt.
