    Main description: The Global Commonwealth of Citizens critically examines the prospects for cosmopolitan democracy as a viable and humane response to the challenges of globalization. Arising after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the decisive affirmation of Western-style democracy, cosmopolitan democracy envisions a world politics in which democratic participation by citizens is not constrained by national borders, and where democracy spreads through dialogue and incentives, not coercion and war. This is an incisive and thought-provoking book by one of the world's leading proponents of cosmopolitan democracy. Daniele Archibugi looks at all aspects of cosmopolitan democracy in theory and practice. Is democracy beyond nation-states feasible? Is it possible to inform global governance with democratic norms and values, and if so, how? Archibugi carefully answers questions like these and forcefully responds to skeptics and critics. He argues that democracy can be extended to the global political arena by strengthening and reforming existing international organizations and creating new ones, and he calls for dramatic changes in the foreign policies of nations to make them compatible with global public interests. Archibugi advocates giving voice to new global players such as social movements, cultural communities, and minorities. He proposes building institutional channels across borders to address common problems, and encourages democratic governance at the local, national, regional, and global levels.     In this investigation of the contemporary notion of evil, C. Fred Alford asks what we can learn about this concept, and about ourselves, by examining a society where it is unknown-where language contains no word that equates to the English term "evil." Does such a society look upon human nature more benignly? Do its members view the world through rose-colored glasses? Korea offers a fascinating starting point, and Alford begins his search for answers there.In conversations with hundreds of Koreans from diverse religions and walks of life-students, politicians, teachers, Buddhist monks, Confucian scholars, Catholic priests, housewives, psychiatrists, and farmers-Alford found remarkable agreement about the nonexistence of evil. Koreans regard evil not as a moral category but as an intellectual one, the result of erroneous Western thinking. For them, evil results from the creation of dualisms, oppositions between people and ideas.Alford's interviews often led to discussions about imported ways of thinking and the impact of globalization upon society at large. In particular, he was struck by how Koreans' responses to globalization matched Westerners' views about evil. In much of the world, he argues, globalization is the ultimate dualism-attractive for the enlightenment and freedom it brings, terrifying for the great social and personal upheaval it can cause

    We often think of 'Mrs Dalloway' or 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' as difficult books, originally published in small print runs for a handful of readers. But from the mid-1920s, these texts and others were available in cheap format across Europe. Uniform series of reprints such as the 'Travellers' Library', the 'Phoenix Library', Tauchnitz and Albatross sold modernism to a wide audience - thus transforming a little-read "highbrow" movement into a popular phenomenon. The expansion of the readership for modernism was not only vertical (from "high" to "low") but also spatial - since publisher's series were distributed within and outside metropolitan centres in Britain, continental Europe and elsewhere. Many non-English native speakers discovered texts by Joyce, Woolf and others in the original language - a fact that has rarely been mentioned in histories of modernism. Drawing on extensive work in neglected archives, 'Cheap Modernism' will be of interest to all those who want to know how the new literature became a global commercial hit

    Vor dem Hintergrund der anhaltenden Internationalisierungsstrategien in den Automobil- und Zulieferindustrieunternehmen entsteht ein Wandel in der unmittelbaren Umwelt der Organisation, der die Prozesse des kollektiven und individuellen Lernens stark beschleunigt. Diese Veränderungen erfordern einerseits die Gestaltung der betrieblichen Arbeitspolitikfelder, wie z.B. Personal- und Qualifizierungspolitik in der Produktion, und andererseits die Förderung der Kompetenzentwicklung durch qualifikatorisch wirksame Lernprozesse am Arbeitsplatz und im Arbeitsverlauf/-vorgang. Die Autorin analysiert die betrieblichen arbeitspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen und Strukturen sowie die methodisch-didaktischen Lernarrangements bei der Gestaltung von aneignungsförderlichen Lernprozessen in der Fertigung von erzeugenden Automobil- und Zulieferindustrieunternehmen.- Aus der Perspektive der Organisation als Einheit stehen das Handeln der Akteure im Unternehmen und das Individuum als Subjekt des Lernens in einer prozessorientierten Wechselwirkung und direktem Zusammenhang. Der Untersuchungsfokus richtet sich auf das "Lernen auf dem Shop-Floor" und somit auf das "Lernen im Prozess der Arbeit" sowie auf den Gestaltungskontext von moderner Lerninfrastruktur zur Verschmelzung von informellem und formellem Lernen in der Fertigung. Die Ergebnisse aus der Analyse bestätigen die Annahme, dass Lernen im Prozess der Arbeit im Shop-Floor-Bereich die Systematisierung und Strukturierung des Lernprozessablaufs benötigt. Dies kann durch den Einsatz von lernförderlichen Rahmenbedingungen, Methoden und Instrumenten realisiert werden. Die betriebliche Politikgestaltung, die Arbeitsbedingungen und die Arbeitsorganisation sowie die Zusammenarbeit der Akteure sind dabei wesentliche Faktoren.- Die systematische Einbettung von Lernen im Arbeitsprozess erfordert demnach als Voraussetzung die Akzeptanz und Mitwirkung an Veränderungsprozessen. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen dieser Studie wird als Empfehlung ein Instruktionsdesign zur umfassenden Qualifizierung von Mitarbeitern auf dem Shop-Floor konzipiert
