    Main description: Die Untersuchung behandelt einen bis heute vernachlässigten, zentralen Aspekt der Geschichte des imitatio-Begriffs. Es wird gezeigt, daß sich die renaissance-humanistische imitatio-Kategorie in Interdependenz mit dem Lebens- und Glaubensideal der imitatio Christi herausbildet. Dies erlaubt es, sowohl bisher unbeachtete Quellen und Etappen der imitatio-Geschichte erstmals zu würdigen als auch bereits vieluntersuchte neu zu betrachten. Untersucht werden vor allem Dantes "Commedia", Christine de Pizans "Chemin de long estude", Petrarcas "De vita solitaria", "De otio religioso" und "Familiares", die "dispute ciceroniane" des 15./16. Jahrhunderts und die Verwendung der imitatio-Begrifflichkeit in der Bildung des 12./13. Jahrhunderts

    Main description: This study examines a hitherto neglected but nonetheless cardinal aspect of the history of the concept of imitatio. It demonstrates that imitatio as a category highly operative in the Renaissance humanist tradition took shape in mutual interdependence with the religious ideal of imitatio Christi and its impact on contemporary life. This perspective brings with it an appreciation of sources and stages of the imitatio tradition not formerly perceived as such and also casts new light on those facets of its development that have long been in the forefront of scholarly interest. Discussion centres around Dante's "Divina commedia", Christine de Pizan's "Chemin de long estude", Petrarch's "De vita solitaria", "De otio religioso" and "Familiares", the dispute ciceroniane of the 15th/16th century and the concept of imitatio underlying instruction in rhetoric and poetry in the 12th/13th century

    Barbara Pavlock here illuminates the significance of the erotic in the epic tradition from Alexandrian Greece to the late Renaissance by examining the transformations of two Homeric episodes, Odysseus' encounter with Nausikaa and the night-raid of Odysseus and Diomedes. In close readings of epics by Apollonius of Rhodes, Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Ariosto, and Milton, Pavlock shows how these poets maintain the appearance of thematic continuity as they actually differentiate their own views on heroic values from those of their predecessors. Asserting that the erotic serves in the epic as a locus of criticism of social values, she traces adaptations in rhetorical devices, in larger structural patterns, and in major generic forms, as in the combination of tragic with epic models

    Stefan George und sein Kreis erfahren seit geraumer Zeit starke Aufmerksamkeit. Interesse wird meist den Personen, ihren Werdegängen, ihren politischen Überzeugungen und sexuellen Präferenzen entgegengebracht. Was aber hat das mit der Produktion von Lyrik im George-Kreis zu tun? Die Autorin zeigt, dass beide Aspekte durch ein umfassendes Konzept von Nachahmung verbunden sind. In Georges Lyrik und Poetik identifiziert sie eine Nachahmungstheorie, die sowohl den sozialen Interaktionsformen des Kreises als auch seinen Gedichten zugrunde liegt. Über die stilistische Nachahmung beim Verfassen von Gedichten will der Meister seine Gefolgsleute zu ethischer Nachahmung erziehen und mittelbar auf die Erziehung des ganzen Volkes wirken. Das Buch leistet einen Brückenschlag zwischen sozialgeschichtlichen und poetologischen Ansätzen, die in der George-Forschung bisher unverbunden nebeneinanderstehen. Es versteht die soziale Kreiskonstellation als Folge poetologischer Grundanschauungen. Lyrik und Poetik des Kreises, seine weltanschaulichen und pädagogischen Konzepte sowie individualistische Gegenprogramme konkurrierender Positionen werden in eingehenden Textanalysen dargestellt

    Die Untersuchung behandelt einen bis heute vernachlässigten, zentralen Aspekt der Geschichte des imitatio-Begriffs. Es wird gezeigt, daß sich die renaissance-humanistischen Konzepte der imitatio auctorum in enger Interdependenz und in spannungsvoller Auseinandersetzung mit dem Lebens- und Glaubensideal der imitatio Christi herausbilden. Diese Interdependenz bestimmt im 12.-16. Jahrhundert den Bedeutungs- und Gebrauchswandel der imitatio-Begrifflichkeit und der sequela-Bildlichkeit in entscheidender Weise mit. Diese neue Forschungsperspektive erlaubt es zum einen, bisher unbeachtete, wichtige Quellen und Aspekte der imitatio-Geschichte erstmals zu würdigen - Dantes "Commedia", Christine de Pizans "Chemin de long estude", Petrarcas "De vita solitaria" und "De otio religioso", die Verwendungen der imitatio-Begrifflichkeit in der rhetorischen und poetischen Bildung des 12./13. Jahrhunderts. Sie erlaubt es zum anderen, bereits vieluntersuchte Quellen und Etappen dieser Geschichte neu zu betrachten - vor allem Petrarcas "Familiarium rerum libri" und die "dispute ciceroniane" des 15./16. Jahrhunderts. Ein wichtiges Ergebnis der Untersuchung ist die historische Neubewertung der Spezifika der renaissance-humanistischen Rhetorik und Poetik
