From Reagan's regular invocation of America as "a city on a hill" to Obama's use of spiritual language in describing social policy, religious rhetoric is a regular part of how candidates communicate with voters. Although the Constitution explicitly forbids a religious test as a qualification to public office, many citizens base their decisions about candidates on their expressed religious beliefs and values. In Religious Rhetoric and American Politics, Christopher B. Chapp shows that Americans often make political choices because they identify with a "civil religion," not because they think of themselves as cultural warriors. Chapp examines the role of religious political rhetoric in American elections by analyzing both how political elites use religious language and how voters respond to different expressions of religion in the public sphere.Chapp analyzes the content and context of political speeches and draws on survey data, historical evidence, and controlled experiments to evaluate how citizens respond to religious stumping. Effective religious rhetoric, he finds, is characterized by two factors-emotive cues and invocations of collective identity-and these factors regularly shape the outcomes of American presidential elections and the dynamics of political representation. While we tend to think that certain issues (e.g., abortion) are invoked to appeal to specific religious constituencies who vote solely on such issues, Chapp shows that religious rhetoric is often more encompassing and less issue-specific. He concludes that voter identification with an American civic religion remains a driving force in American elections, despite its potentially divisive undercurrents

From Ronald Reagan's regular invocation of America as 'a city on a hill' to Barack Obama's use of spiritual language in describing social policy, religious rhetoric is a regular part of how candidates communicate with voters. Although the Constitution explicitly forbids a religious test as a qualification to public office, many citizens base their decisions about candidates on their expressed religious beliefs and values. This book shows that Americans often make political choices because they identify with a 'civil religion'.

'Indifference to Difference' organises around Alain Badiou's suggestion that, in the face of increasing claims of identitarian specificity, one might consider the politics and practice of being indifferent to difference. Such a politics would be based on the superabundance of desire and its inability to settle into identity. Madhavi Menon shows that if we turn to another kind of universalism - not one that insists we are all different but one that recognizes we are all similar in our powerlessness to contain desire - then difference no longer becomes the focus of our identity.

Though separated by almost half a century, the campaigns of both George Wallace and Donald Trump broke new grounds for political partisanship and divisiveness. Andrew Stoner analyses the two candidates, their campaigns, and their speeches and activities, as well as their coverage by the media, through the lens of demagogic rhetoric.

Examining how Marxist theory is missing but necessary, this book traces the theoretical maze in which Marxism currently finds itself, and from which it is trying to exit whilst at the same time remaining epistemologically intact. When stripped of any or all of its core elements - such as class formation/consciousness/struggle, and a socialist transition - it ceases to be what historically Marxists have claimed it is. Consequently, the book constitutes an attempt by Marxist political economy to extricate itself from mistaken attempts to conflate it with the cultural turn, identity politics, bourgeois economics, or varieties of populism and nationalism, together with the danger of not doing so

"This collection investigates the complex and myriad relations between identity and borders in an increasingly globalized world. The movement towards a borderless world, bolstered by an unprecedented development in information and communication technology, forces us to rethink traditional notions of singular identity, and directs us towards the need for engaging and negotiating with the world in multiple ways. Employing a wide range of critical approaches to works that examine and explore the contested terrain of globalization and the hotly disputed arena of borders, the essays brought together here offer innovative perspectives through which issues of borders, globalization and identity can be negotiated. Straddling various genres, this collection represents an investigation of the conflicting relationship between identity and borders in the contemporary globalized world."...

This book discusses how human wellbeing is constructed and transferred intergenerationally in the context of international migration. Research on intergenerational transmission (IGT) has tended to focus on material asset transfers prompting calls to balance material asset analysis with that of psychosocial assets - including norms, values attitudes and behaviors. Drawing on empirical research undertaken with Latin American migrants in London, Katie Wright sets out to redress the balance by examining how far psychosocial transfers may be used as a buffer to mediate the material deprivations that migrants face via adoption of a gender, life course and human wellbeing perspective. Katie Wright is Reader in International Development at the University of East London, UK. Her research focuses on gender, human wellbeing, international migration, microfinance, sustainable livelihoods and Latin America. Her previous monograph, International Migration, Development, Human Wellbeing and International Migration (2012) drew on Economic and Social Research Council funded work in this area 1: Introduction -- 2: Intergenerational Transfers over the Life Course: Addressing Gendered and Temporal Complexities -- 3: Intergenerational Transfers, Migration and Human Wellbeing -- 4: Contextualising Intergenerational Transmission and Human Wellbeing in London -- 5: Intergenerational Transmission and Human Wellbeing: Latin American Migrant Women and their Daughters in London -- 6: Intergenerational Relations and Gendered Transmissions: Conflicts, Reparations and Solidarities -- 7: Conclusions and Implications for Theory and Policy
