"White field, black seeds – who can sow? Although the riddle from which this these words are taken comes from oral tradition, it refers to the ability to write, a skill which in most Nordic countries was not regarded as necessary for everyone. And yet a significant number of ordinary people with no access to formal schooling took up the pen and produced a variety of highly interesting texts: diaries, letters, memoirs, collections of folklore and handwritten newspapers.

This collection presents the work of primarily Nordic scholars from fields such as linguistics, history, literature and folklore studies who share an interest in the production, dissemination and reception of written texts by non-privileged people during the long nineteenth century. "

As the global banking boom of the early twenty-first century expanded towards implosion, Icelandic media began calling the country’s celebrity financiers útrásarvíkingar: “raiding vikings.” This new coinage encapsulated the macho, medievalist nationalism which underwrote Iceland’s exponential financialisation. Yet within a few days in October 2008, Iceland saw all its main banks collapse beneath debts worth nearly ten times the country’s GDP.Hall charts how Icelandic novelists and poets grappled with the Crash over the ensuing decade. As the first English-language monograph devoted to twenty-first-century Icelandic literature, it provides Anglophone readers with an introduction to one of the world’s liveliest literary scenes. It also contributes a key case study for understanding global artistic responses to the early twenty-first century crisis of runaway, unregulated capitalism, exploring the struggles of writers to adapt realist forms of art to surreal times. As Iceland’s biggest crisis since their independence from Denmark in 1944, the effect of the Crash on the national self-image was as seismic as its effects on the economy. This study analyses the centrality of whiteness and the abjection of the “developing world” in Iceland’s post-colonial identity, and shows how Crash-writing explores the collisions of Iceland’s traditional, nationalist medievalism with a dystopian, Orientalist medievalism associated with the Islamic world. The Crash in Iceland was instantly recognised as offering important economic insights. This book shows how Iceland also helps us to understand the cultural convulsions that have followed the Financial Crisis widely in the West.

This book explores the potential of the Internet for enabling new and flexible political participation modes. It meticulously illustrates how the Internet is responsible for citizens' participation practices from being general, high-threshold, temporally constricted, and dependent on physical presence to being topic-centered, low-threshold, temporally discontinuous, and independent from physical presence. With its ethnographic focus on Icelandic and German online participation tools Betri Reykjavík and LiquidFriesland, the book offers plentiful advice for citizens, programmers, politicians, and administrations alike on how to get the most out of online participation formats.

Birtingur was a literary/art magazine published in Iceland 1955-1968. Named after the philosophical novel by Voltaire, Candide (translated into Icelandic by nobel author Halldór Laxness as Birtingur and published in 1945), it was nothing short of instrumental in shaping modernism in Icelandic art and literature. It served as a platform for discussions for Icelandic artists and authors and was heavily debated all over the country. This book by Þröstur Helgason is truly a welcome input into the Icelandic literary and art history.

"Examines the persistent narrative of Iceland as a "naturally" musical country through environmental studies and musicology and using examples from folk, pop, and experimental music, looking specifically at lyrics, composition, marketing, and reception"-- "Listening to the dissonances of nature and nationhood in modern Iceland; during the past three decades, Iceland has attained a strong presence in the world through its musical culture, with images of the nation being packaged and shipped out in melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. What 'Iceland' means for people, both at home and abroad, is conditioned by music and its ability to animate notions of nature and nationality. In six chapters that range from discussions of indie rock ballads to 'Nordic noir' television music, Dissonant Landscapes describes the capacity of musical expression to transform ideas about nature and nationality on the northern edges of Europe"--

This paper analyses the reform undertaken by Iceland to avert a looming crisis and restore fish stocks to sustainable levels. The paper outlines the process involved in designing and implementing this reform. It also reflects on the challenges encountered and the environmental, economic and social impacts of the reform. It concludes by discussing some wider lessons learned for other governments seeking to tackle similar environmental problems. This country study draws on the 2017 OECD report The Political Economy of Biodiversity Policy Reform.

In his performances—which often extend over several weeks or months—the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson explores not only his own physical and psychological limits and the essence of early performance art, but also the artist’s status and the different images of his role. For his installation “The Schumann Machine” (2008), created for Manifesta 7, he spent several hours every day for two weeks singing the cycle of songs “Dichterliebe” (1840) by Robert Schumann (1810–1856). The characteristic features of his performances are the melancholy, but also absurdly comical moments. * * This book unites for the first time all of Kjartansson’s works related to music from 2001 to 2012. With contributions by Philip Auslander, Heike Munder, Markús þór Andrésson, and a conversation between Edek Bartz and Ragnar Kjartansson. * * Published with the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich. * * Second edition

Abstract: Global migration movements are also reflected in classrooms. However, the professional re-entry of migrant teachers with and without a refugee background has been neglected for a long time. This publication, which was developed in the European project "International Teachers for Tomorrow's School" (ITTS), is dedicated to this question. In seven country contributions, the opportunities and challenges of returning to work in Belgium, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Poland, Slovenia and Türkiye are examined - for some of the countries, new ground was broken. It is shown which conditions favour, challenge or prevent a new professional start. In addition, the results of the cross-national ITTS study are presented, in which high satisfaction values are reflected among those teachers who succeeded in re-entering the profession despite many hurdles. Finally, the findings of the project are condensed into a series of hints and recommendations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Composed during Sturlungaöld, the Icelandic family sagas depict an era when the Icelandic Free State was still intact. Yet these texts provide a considerable number of protagonists that not only display a striking non-conformity with the Old-Norse society, but also pose a threat to societal balance. How are these characters to be interpreted? Whereas some of them have already been examined from different perspectives, I aim at putting to the test a new interpretation, guided by the concept of »the Figure of the Third«. Especially interesting for my examination is a specific type of third figure, the so-called trickster. In this paper I present a reading of the protagonist of Hreiðars þáttr heimska (»The Tale of Hreiðarr the Stupid«) as a trickster.
