    Das epochale Gedicht "Howl" des Beat-Poeten Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) verursachte in den 1950er-Jahren einen Skandal und zog einen Prozess wegen Obszönität nach sich. Auf vier miteinander verschränkten Erzählebenen beleuchtet der Film das Werk, seine gesellschaftliche und literaturhistorische Wirkung sowie das Leben des Autors. Qualitativ changiert dies von Ebene zu Ebene: Während eine animierte Verfilmung des Gedichts allzu nah am Text bleibt, unterhalten die szenischen Nachstellungen aus dem Prozess sowie aus Ginsbergs Leben.
