    Die vorliegende Studie interpretiert in vier eng miteinander verzahnten Kapiteln die Texte einer der langlebigsten Erzähltraditionen des deutschen Mittelalters und zielt auf eine Neubeschreibung der aventiurehaften Dietrichepik aus rezeptionsästhetischer Perspektive. Dabei gelangt die Arbeit zu neuen Einsichten im Bereich der narrativen Konstanten des Korpus und zeigt, wie der lang anhaltende Erfolg der Texte zu erklären ist. Die Arbeit lässt sich zugleich als Versuch verstehen auszutesten, wie ‚wörtlich‘ man mittelalterliche Schemaliteratur eigentlich lesen darf.

    This book traces the development of the ideal of sincerity from its origins in Anglo-Saxon monasteries to its eventual currency in fifteenth-century familiar letters. Beginning by positioning sincerity as an ideology at the intersection of historical pragmatics and the history of emotions, the author demonstrates how changes in the relationship between outward expression and inward emotions changed English language and literature. While the early chapters reveal that the notion of sincerity was a Christian intervention previously absent from Germanic culture, the latter part of the book provides more focused studies of contrition and love. In doing so, the author argues that under the rubric of courtesy these idealized emotions influenced English in terms of its everyday pragmatics and literary style.     The study of ego-documents figures as a prominent theme in cutting-edge research in the Humanities. Focusing on private letters, diaries and autobiography, this volume covers a wide range of different languages and historical periods, from the sixteenth century to World War I. The volume stands out by its consistent application of the most recent developments in historical-sociolinguistic methodology in research on first-person writings. Some of the articles concentrate on social differences in relation to linguistic variation in the historical context. Others hone in on self-representation, writer-addressee interaction and identity work. The key issue of the relationship between speech and writing is addressed when investigating the hybridity of ego-documents, which may contain both “oral” features and elements typical of the written language. The volume is of interest to a wide readership, ranging from scholars of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, sociology and social history to (advanced) graduate and postgraduate students in courses on language variation and change.
