    Rebecca Lemon illuminates a previously-buried conception of addiction, as a form of devotion at once laudable, difficult, and extraordinary, that has been concealed by the persistent modern link of addiction to pathology. Surveying sixteenth-century invocations, she reveals how early moderns might consider themselves addicted to study, friendship, love, or God. However, she also uncovers their understanding of addiction as a form of compulsion that resonates with modern scientific definitions. Specifically, early modern medical tracts, legal rulings, and religious polemic stressed the dangers of addiction to alcohol in terms of disease, compulsion, and enslavement. Yet the relationship between these two understandings of addiction was not simply oppositional, for what unites these discourses is a shared emphasis on addiction as the overthrow of the will.Etymologically, "addiction" is a verbal contract or a pledge, and even as sixteenth-century audiences actively embraced addiction to God and love, writers warned against commitment to improper forms of addiction, and the term became increasingly associated with disease and tyranny. Examining canonical texts including Doctor Faustus, Twelfth Night, Henry IV, and Othello alongside theological, medical, imaginative, and legal writings, Lemon traces the variety of early modern addictive attachments. Although contemporary notions of addiction seem to bear little resemblance to its initial meanings, Lemon argues that the early modern period's understanding of addiction is relevant to our modern conceptions of, and debates about, the phenomenon

    The book presents a theory of relationships between the forms of devotion and early drama genres. The historical background is the circumstances of the Church becoming independent of the Empire. A theological and philosophical aspect of the transformation of piety at the time was the specification of the ontological status of the sacred (spiritualization) and "shifting it to Heaven" (transcendentalization). In opposition to a theory of Western civilization as a process of increasing individual self-control, the author argues for the need to take into account purely religious conditions (the idea of recapitulation). This allows the author to develop a holistic aesthetics for the religiously inspired creativity in the period spanning the 11th-15th centuries and to propose a new typology of medieval drama.

Hans Holleis zeigt, wie es die paradoxe Form der Gabe erlaubt, sie gewinnbringend auf nahe Themenfelder wie Vergebung und die Hingabe im Opfer zu übertragen: Als ob die Widersprüche unseres ökonomischen Handelns unsere Fähigkeiten zu Vergebung und aufopfernder Hingabe hervorrufen würden. Dabei wird die komplexe Sprechweise Derridas mit den Begriffsfeldern von Différance und Dekonstruktion verständlich erläutert und im Kontext einer Debatte um den Begriff der Postmoderne aufbereitet.

Based on the life and mystical writings of Joana de Jesus, a Cistercian nun, intellectual disciple of Teresa of Avila, this study shows the cultural embeddedness of anxiousness: a feeling akin to the Portuguese term »saudade« (yearning, Sehnsucht).     The gift is a key term in the works of Jacques Derridas. For the first time ever he is viewed in connection with the Différence and analyzed within the context of postmodernism. Unser Handeln ist zu einem großen Teil darauf ausgerichtet, was wir von uns geben und empfangen. Im Werk Jacques Derridas werden Geben und Nehmen in ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit entfaltet. Hans Holleis zeigt, wie es die paradoxe Form der Gabe erlaubt, sie gewinnbringend auf nahe Themenfelder wie Vergebung und die Hingabe im Opfer zu übertragen: Als ob die Widersprüche unseres ökonomischen Handelns unsere Fähigkeiten zu Vergebung und aufopfernder Hingabe hervorrufen würden. Dabei wird die komplexe Sprechweise Derridas mit den Begriffsfeldern von Différance und Dekonstruktion verständlich erläutert und im Kontext einer Debatte um den Begriff der Postmoderne aufbereitet.

    The gift is a key term in the works of Jacques Derridas. For the first time ever he is viewed in connection with the Différence and analyzed within the context of postmodernism Unser Handeln ist zu einem großen Teil darauf ausgerichtet, was wir von uns geben und empfangen. Im Werk Jacques Derridas werden Geben und Nehmen in ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit entfaltet.Hans Holleis zeigt, wie es die paradoxe Form der Gabe erlaubt, sie gewinnbringend auf nahe Themenfelder wie Vergebung und die Hingabe im Opfer zu übertragen: Als ob die Widersprüche unseres ökonomischen Handelns unsere Fähigkeiten zu Vergebung und aufopfernder Hingabe hervorrufen würden.Dabei wird die komplexe Sprechweise Derridas mit den Begriffsfeldern von Différance und Dekonstruktion verständlich erläutert und im Kontext einer Debatte um den Begriff der Postmoderne aufbereitet

    Rebecca Lemon illuminates a previously-buried conception of addiction, as a form of devotion at once laudable, difficult, and extraordinary, that has been concealed by the persistent modern link of addiction to pathology. Surveying sixteenth-century invocations, she reveals how early moderns might consider themselves addicted to study, friendship, love, or God. However, she also uncovers their understanding of addiction as a form of compulsion that resonates with modern scientific definitions. Specifically, early modern medical tracts, legal rulings, and religious polemic stressed the dangers of addiction to alcohol in terms of disease, compulsion, and enslavement. Yet the relationship between these two understandings of addiction was not simply oppositional, for what unites these discourses is a shared emphasis on addiction as the overthrow of the will.Etymologically, "addiction" is a verbal contract or a pledge, and even as sixteenth-century audiences actively embraced addiction to God and love, writers warned against commitment to improper forms of addiction, and the term became increasingly associated with disease and tyranny. Examining canonical texts including Doctor Faustus, Twelfth Night, Henry IV, and Othello alongside theological, medical, imaginative, and legal writings, Lemon traces the variety of early modern addictive attachments. Although contemporary notions of addiction seem to bear little resemblance to its initial meanings, Lemon argues that the early modern period's understanding of addiction is relevant to our modern conceptions of, and debates about, the phenomenon
